TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

The vote goes ALASKAN LIGHT, representing Karl Burke, who has been firing in the two-year-old winners so far this season. The Kodiac filly was picked up for 48,000gns at the Tatts October Book 2 sales in October and she’s certainly bred to have plenty of ability, being a full-sisterto the Listed-placedAlaskan Gold Richard Hannon boasts a 40 per cent strike-rate with his juvenile runners here over the last five years, so Raakeb is worthy of consideration. Ginger Hunter and Koffee And Kale are others to note.

WIN: ALASKAN LIGHT EACHWAY: RAAKEB

RACE

2

ZAPPATAshowed no signs ofhiswinning run coming to an end at Bath on Mondayand, despite having to shoulder a massive penalty, he is very much the one to beat. Hill O Rue made an encouraging seasonal/handicap debut when runner-up to Flamborough Head at Redcarand should gowell offthe same mark. The reopposingwinnerhas strung three solid performances together and may improve for the addition of cheekpieces, while Sweet Cicely is a place player too.

WIN: ZAPPATA EACHWAY: HILL O

RACE 3

REIGNING PROFIT produced a fine performance when eased down to win a class 4 event at Pontefract and a 5lb penalty might not be enough to anchor him if arriving in the same mood. The Coffee Pod went off favourite for a 0-90 handicap on his seasonal reappearance at Epsom and certainlywasn’t disgraced finishing fifth. Hewarrants plenty of respect dropped in class with that run under his belt, while Abate and High Opinion are others to keep an eye on.

WIN: REIGNING PROFIT EACHWAY: THE COFFEE POD

RACE 4

REBEL EMPIRE failed to make an impression over the minimum trip at Ascot last week. This return to 6f will prove more to his liking and Richard Hannon’s inmate has strong claims on his third at Newcastle in March. Fortamourwon this in 2022 and last month’s third back at this venue points to another big run from the veteran sprinter. Mister Sox bids for a hat-trick with solid claims, having scored nicely at Pontefract.

RACE 5

BAY DREAM BELIEVER scored off this mark over C&D last summer A recent third at Beverley boosts confidence in her chances, given the winner has subsequently gone in again, and Mark Walford’s inmate could be bang there at the finish. Mariner remains on a workable mark, despite a 3lb rise for scoring at Doncaster, while the unexposed Steps In Time makes his handicap debut and is worth noting for any significant moves in the market.

RACE 6

Lima Sierra has a shout on the pick of her all-weather form over the winter, while Pastoral Way is fitted with cheekpieces for his first attempt at 6f, having finished third over the minimum trip at Ayr. I GOT KNOW HOW returned to action with her best effort to date, when fifth at Pontefract last month.Awinnerhas alreadycome out ofthat race and she could have more to offer on only her second start in a handicap.

WIN: I GOT KNOW HOW

EACHWAY: LIMA SIERRA

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yard handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No 7. Tongue Strap worn by No 1, 3.

Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 1, 4. Running for the first time since Wind Surgery No 5. Betting Forecast:

5-1 Miakoda (IRE), 11-2 Barmyblade (IRE), 6-1 Lima Sierra (GB), 7-1 Sun Keeper (GB), I Got Know How (GB), 8-1 Pastoral Way (GB), 10-1 Queen Dinah (GB), 16-1 Miss Cast (IRE), 22-1 Novamay (GB), 33-1 Kilo Sunshine (GB)

Though BARMYBLADE failed to build on his Catterick reappearance success at Ayr recently but this relatively quick turnaround would suggest that all is well. He is taken to resume winning ways, perhaps at the chief expense of Lima Sierra and Miakoda.
