Good evening and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for our first evening meeting of the season.
This evening, we take a moment to commemorate the owner of some real Ripon legends. Dr Keith Howard OBE of Cragg Wood Racing, who sadly passed away in 2021, is remembered each year on this raceday with the running of the Dr Keith Howard OBE Memorial Handicap at 6.45.
The Cragg Wood colours will be carried by He’s An Angel and the remarkable Mark’s Choice. The record holding TEN-time winner at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse, after surpassing the eight wins of Cragg Wood Racing’s legendary Piper’s Note last season, it would be wonderful to see him make a bold bid in Dr Keith’s own race. There are plenty of interesting opponents, however, with Course & Distance winners Wen Moon and Hurt You Never and the in-form Betweenthesticks to name but a few.
Tonight marks the debut of our very first Twilight Tracks evening, and we’re delighted to welcome back the ever-popular Reef Hound. They’ll be taking to the bandstand between the final races and continuing their performance into the evening after the last race, so we warmly invite you to stay, relax, and enjoy what promises to be a great evening.
We’re back in action in just over a week’s time with our much-loved Traditional Family Day on Sunday 17th May. With a fantastic line-up of entertainment for all ages, alongside some thrilling racing, it promises to be a fun-filled day out for the whole family—so be sure to come along and join us!
Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

and including 6th May.

RED SPELLS DANGER produced a couple of positive efforts as a youngster and has posted another two creditable runs in defeat so far this season. Tim Easterby’s charge filled the runner-up spot at Southwell last time and his mark of 79 sets a decent standard, so he’s likelyto take all the beating ifhandling this undulating track.Tip Foster and Ndoto can battle it out for second.
WIN: RED SPELLS DANGER
DANGER: TIP FOSTER
Hood Wink forced a dead-heat to claim a first career success at Wetherby but although respected undera penalty, MASABAN gets the nod.The son ofSiyouni contested a couple of decent maidens when trained in Ireland and was far from disgraced on his UK/stable debut at Doncastera fortnight ago. He’s a half-brotherto two smart horses and stepped up to the mile now handicapping, he can follow suit. Dalamara heads the remainder
Ruth Carr’s BETWEENTHESTICKS comes here seeking a hat-trick having kicked off his seasonwithvictories atWolverhampton and Pontefract, and can add to his tallyfollowing a 3lb rise. GloryFighteralso made awinning start to his turfseasonwhen staying onwell to be victorious at Nottingham last month. Mark’s Choice ended last season with two victories before an underwhelming return to action at Thirsk, but usually needs his first run and is 3-5 over this C&D. Vince L’Amour can be a tricky horse to predict, but could be worthy of a place if he can put his last run behind him.
WIN: BETWEENTHESTICKS DANGER: GLORY FIGHTER
In an open-looking handicap, MUSICAL TOUCH should be able to advance from his Southwellwinwith EthanTindall taking offa useful 5lb.Tim Easterbysaddled thewinner ofthis race lastyearand comes herewith a good pair C&DwinnerModernTimes has run well in his two starts this season, while U Sure Dowas fourth over7fon his reappearance at Thirsk last month. Wreck It Ryley was an easy winner at Leicester two starts ago and although disappointing there last time, he may not be far away if bouncing back.
GLISTENING NIGHTS made a pleasing return to action when third over C&D last month. The five-year-old has neverwon offa mark this high previouslybut that effort offered hope that he can, especially because a drop in class is likely to be of benefit. Wolverhampton scorer No Knee Never merits respect under a penalty, while veteran Poet’s Dawn can’t be underestimated.
Bradbury would probably have finished a little closer were he not short of room at a crucial stage last time and is sure to be involved if handling the switch to turf, but it might pay to side with LADY VANGUARD The 320,000gns purchase showed promise on her handicap bow at Yarmouth and may do better over this intermediate trip. She was eased 2lb in the handicap for that latest effort too and with Liam Wright removing a further 5lb, she could be well treated. Riddikulus is also noted.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This six furlong contest, which is restricted to three to five year olds, is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

Sam Alexander was born with Cystic Fibrosis, but he never let it stop him from living his life to the full.
CF is a serious condition, and a few infections can soon lead to drastically reduced lung function. Sam’s life had become very difficult before he had a successful double lung transplant in February 2020. From that point he rebuilt his life. He enrolled on a Sports Journalism degree at Teesside University and he began working for his local paper, the Teesdale Mercury. He travelled extensively and filled his life with friends and social events. Sadly, Sam passed away aged 32 in March 2025. Sam loved horse racing, and he would have been delighted to have a race named in his memory at Ripon. His family and friends have been fundraising since his death and have raised more than £40,000 to support the work of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. The Trust is the charity uniting people to stop Cystic Fibrosis. Thanks to research and new medication, CF patients are living longer, more fulfilled lives. We hope that future medical advances will mean they won’t have to endure the same difficulties that Sam had to deal with.
CF is a genetic condition which causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system. It affects more than 11,000 people in the UK. CF comes with challenges, affecting physical health and mental wellbeing.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
