Good afternoon and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse! It’s great to have the ITV cameras with us once more for our biggest day of the season, which features the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap.

We are proud to be William Hill’s longest standing sponsorship, with the partnership lasting over 30 years and we can’t wait to see who adds their name to the roll of honour shortly after 3.20 this afternoon. The trophy has not ventured south of Yorkshire for the last fourteen years and with a very strong Yorkshire contingent, there’s a fair chance that could extend to fifteen this afternoon.

We kick off the card at 1.35 with the Juddmonte Restricted Novice Stakes over a mile. It’s a fantastic initiative by Juddmonte to support a series of developmental races across the season and we hope to see some stars of the future on show in our first race this afternoon.

We have just three meetings remaining in our 2024 season after today, the next of which is Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 26th August. It’s a great opportunity to get the family together for some great racing, featuring the Listed EBF Ripon Champion Two-Yrs-Old Trophy, with the added bonus of lots of free entertainment for the children.

We hope you have a wonderful day with us.

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

LINWOOD comfortably brushed aside a subsequent winner when making it second-time lucky at Newbury last month and rates a highly appealing option. That was a step forward from his debut fourth at Salisbury and although he still looked a work in progress as the race unfolded, this step up from 7f could prove ideal. Fellow winners Brastias and Manila Thriller appeal most of the rest, although Hyperchromatic is a potential improver.

WIN: LINWOOD

RACE 2

DANGER: BRASTIAS

Soldier’s Heart and LINE OF FORCE appeal most and while the former should find this easierthan his eighth-placed finish in the Molecomb at Goodwood, Karl Burke’s colt takes a more significant ease in grade after a stiff task in the Superlative at Newmarket’s July Festival. The winner of his two previous starts, the son of Calyx can exploit dropping back down in class and trip. His stablemate Lovat Scout and Morte Point look the pick of the remainder

WIN: LINE OF FORCE DANGER: SOLDIER’S HEART

RACE

3

With a plum draw, the hat-trick seeking RAYVONN can extend the sequence and land the most significant victory of his career so far. Last year’s winner Roundhay Park looks primed for a repeat bid and rates the chief threat to the selection off a 3lb lower mark. Course specialist Fortamour, along with Another Baar, Grant Wood and Tim Easterby’s pair Glendown and Danzan, also hold each-way appeal.

WIN: RAYVONN

RACE 4

DANGER: ROUNDHAY PARK

Lastyear’s runner-up Summerghand is likelyto attract plentyofsupport as he is 8lb lower this time around and holds an obvious chance. However, thevote goes to SECRETGUEST Bryan Smart’s four-year-old returned after undergoing wind surgery to produce a much better effort when finishing second at Redcar last week and he competes off the same mark. Dare To Hope and Manila Scouse are just two others to consider

SUMMERGHAND

RACE 5

Garden Oasis has been a model of consistency this year and it would be no surprise to see him use his usual front-running tactics to go close off the same mark as when third at Pontefract last time. However, he could come out second best to PARK STREET, who was just touched off by a neck into second at Redcar last week and goes off an unchanged rating. Al Muqdad is another to note.

PARK STREET

RACE 6

A taking winner over this distance on her penultimate start at Beverley, CHICAGO GAL then ran with credit over further at Leicester but should be much more at home over this trip. The top-weight may have too much for Mr Jetman, who made a pleasing comeback at Musselburgh lastweek, while Barleybrown returned towinningwayswith a determined success over 1m at Newcastle Completing the shortlist are Bay Dream Believer and Due Consideration.

WIN: CHICAGO GAL

RACE

7

DANGER: MR JETMAN

Not inactionsince scoringwithauthorityover1m2fhere inJune,DANCINGWITHMYSELF is likelyto be fresh and the step up in trip can eke out furtherimprovement offa 4lb higher figure. Fun Loving got off the markwith a taking success from the front at Nottingham and similar tactics will make her dangerous again. Promoted to first after a disqualification at Doncaster, Can Can Girl is another to consider on the drop back in distance.

WIN: DANCINGWITHMYSELF

LINWOOD knew plenty more than on debut when opening his account at Newbury last month and the Group-2 entered colt looks the one to beat as he goes further up in trip. RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACEFORM

This race is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
