Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for Gold Medal Family Day!

We have some interesting action on the track this afternoon and we’re delighted to stage the thirteenth running of the David Chapman Memorial at 4.10. David was an excellent trainer, especially renowned for his talent for training sprinters such as Chaplins Club, Quito and Soba, who won a remarkable 11 races back in 1982 including the Great St Wilfrid here. David’s Granddaughter, Ruth Carr, has managed to win the race on a couple of occasions and we wish her and the whole family the best of luck as she bids to do so again with Spanish Angel today.

Happy birthday also to Karl and Paula Budge and to Ted Myers who celebrate their birthdays with sponsored races this afternoon. We hope you have a great day with lots of birthday luck

We have plenty of activities for youngsters in the Course Enclosure this afternoon with inflatable athletics, crafts, Punch and Judy and much more. Get involved by getting five stamps on the activity card to win a gold medal and the chance to win tickets to Lightwater Valley.

Next up for us is our biggest meeting of the season, featuring the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap, next Saturday 17th August. We hope to see many of you back with us for that one.

Wishing you a wonderful afternoon!

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

Awinner and a head second over C&D already this season, MAKALU should appreciate a return to the Yorkshire track and a mark of 62 still looks manageable for Ruth Carr’s charge. Bowood could have plenty more improvement forthcoming after getting off the mark in determined fashion at Doncaster for new connections, while Little Ted and Pinball Wizard are capable of being in the shake-up as well.

WIN: MAKALU

RACE 2

DANGER: BOWOOD

WE DARE TO DREAM didn’t do himself any favours when slowly away on debut at Ayr last month, but the way he finished his race to grab second was highly encouraging and, with improvement expected, he can go one better now. Ann Terry may have disappointed when well fancied on her most recent outing at Thirsk, but she is better judged on her debut third at Ayr, while Mearall looks to be the pick of the newcomers for a stable that knows how to ready one first time out.

WIN: WE DARE TO DREAM DANGER: ANN TERRY

RACE

3

This can go the way of LESLEY’S BOY, who has had a small break since scoring comfortably over shorter at Wetherby in June and a mark of 77 could prove lenient on his handicap debut. The son of Kodi Bear gets the vote ahead of Catterick maiden scorer Easy Peeler and Art Design, who ran well despite being carried left early on at Newmarket on herhandicap bow. Sonic Blue hasyet to rediscoverthe form ofhis debut success at Doncaster but cannot be ruled out either

WIN: LESLEY’S BOY

RACE 4

DANGER: EASY PEELER

COOL LEGEND got no luck in running at Newbury most recently and his fourth-placed finish doesn’t do him justice given the way he ran on near the finish. Left unchanged in the handicap and with cheekpieces added, the William Haggas-trained gelding has a solid chance of making amends for his supporters. St Pancras is feared most off just 4lb higher than for his Pontefract success last month, although Monsieur Melee also warrants consideration, especially if there is any easing in the ground.

WIN: COOL LEGEND

RACE 5

DANGER: ST PANCRAS

A high draw has been beneficial in many sprints at this venue during the current campaign and HURSTWOOD may be the latest to capitalise from that. Only one of the selection’s eight previous career wins has come over the minimum trip. However, he counters that by being a three-time winner here over 6f and his proven course specialism earns him the vote. Gunnerside appears to be the chief danger, although Latin Five is another with valid credentials.

WIN: HURSTWOOD

RACE

6

DANGER: GUNNERSIDE

Degale outran his gigantic odds to finish third at Thirsk last time, so he has to be taken seriously on only his third start. However, BURSINEL looks the way to go William Haggas’ charge finished fourth in first-time blinkers at Windsor on his return from a 140-day break last month and he sets the standard in this contest with a rating of 77. If running to anywhere near that level, the son of Fastnet Rock could prove hard to beat Versatile is another to note.

WIN: BURSINEL DANGER: DEGALE

RACE

7

WIN: JEZ

JEZ BOMB struck by half a length in this grade over 1m1f at Redcar last month and is only3lb higherforthatvictory Sam England’s three-year-old should have no issueswith this extra furlong and he can go in again. Evelyn’s Phoenix has been in consistent form since moving into handicap company and he should remain competitive once again, while Sea La Venus isn’t out of it either dropping in trip.

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for four year olds and upwards which have been rated from 46-65. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular six furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

LESLEY’S BOY justified support in good style at Wetherby a couple of months ago and, with further progress on the cards now heading into nurseries, Richard Faheys’s colt is fancied to follow up at the expense of Art Design, who was placed on her recent handicap debut at Newmarket and first-time cheekpieces may well eke out that bit extra. Easy Peeler, who is another potential improver now handicapping, completes the shortlist.

RECORD TIME

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

BEST TURNED OUT HORSE

A representative of Ripon Racecourse will select the best turned out horse for this race and present a trophy to winning connections

NO SMOKING

With legislation now in force, Ripon Racecourse is a No Smoking area. You will still be permitted to smoke in all outside areas, including the grandstands, balconies and of course on the lawns. Smoking is now prohibited in any enclosed area, bar or restaurant. Ashtrays have been provided all over the course and we ask that you make use of them to keep Ripon Racecourse a clean and tidy area.

HEALTH & SAFETY NOTICE

Ripon Racecourse requests that you observe all Health & Safety requirements whilstyou are here today. Please do not stand in the aisles of the Grandstand as this could prevent access in an emergency. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse.

First Aid points are located in the Claro Rooms in the Paddock Enclosure and to the rear of the Course Enclosure building.

Our fifth race today is held in memory of David Chapman, a stalwart of Yorkshire racing who passed away in 2011.

David is fondly remembered as an excellent trainer and pioneer with a reputation for taking underachieving and often problematic horses under his wing and turning them into regular winners.

David was especially renowned for his talent for training sprinters including Chaplins Club who recorded 24 wins, including nine in one season on two occasions! Sharp Hat, Soaked, Glencroft, Redoubtable, Soba and Quito were just a few other prolific performers to benefit from David’s training.

David’s granddaughter Ruth Carr has followed in her Grandfather’s footsteps, ensuring that winners continue to flow from the Mowbray House Farm base.

Can Spanish Angel provide her with a third win in her Grandfather’s race today?

The race is now in its thirteenth year and it is an honour to have the Chapman family with us to present the winning owners with a superb trophy which they have kindly donated.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

Betting Forecast: 11-4 Jez Bomb (GB), 10-3 Sea La Venus (IRE), 5-1 Evelyn’s Phoenix (FR), 13-2 Bits And Bobs (IRE), 8-1 Patronage (GB), 11-1 Star Delta (GB), 16-1 Pop Noodle (GB)

JEZ BOMB opened his account in good style when scoring at Redcar 3 weeks ago, coming from last to first in a slowly-run race, so he is taken to build on his latest effort and follow up. The main danger could be Sea La Venus, who is well worth another chance with her yard in excellent form, ahead of Evelyn’s Phoenix.
