Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!
We have some interesting action on the track this afternoon with the feature race, the Wilmot-Smith Memorial Handicap taking centre stage at 4.00. The race is run in memory of all of the members of the Wilmot-Smith family who have contributed greatly to the success of the racecourse over the years and we are delighted to have so many members of the family with us today. The race itself looks a cracker with five of the six contenders boasting winning form over this Course and Distance having amassed 12 wins here between them.
We have plenty of activities for the children in the Course Enclosure this afternoon with face painting, bouncy castle, balloon modelling and a circus and juggling workshop with The Great Mandavi who will also be performing some of his captivating shows for us.
Bowel Cancer Screening are joining us this afternoon in the Paddock Enclosure, please do pay them a visit. This is an excellent initiative across the Yorkshire Racecourses this year which is proven to save lives so pleas do take just a few minutes of your time here today to frequent their stand near the Parade Ring.
This is the first meeting of a typically busy August for us. We race again next Sunday when it is Gold Medal Family Day in celebration of the Olympic Games. Next up is the William Hill Great St Wilfrid meeting on Saturday 17th and then a double header with Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 26th August followed by racing the following day, Tuesday 27th.
We hope you have a wonderful afternoon!

K R BURKE won the 2.30 race in 2020 and 2022. The stable is represented by Toomuchforme in the race today.
T EASTERBY won the 3.00 race in 2022 and 2023. The stable is represented by Kodenza in the race today.
T EASTERBY won the 4.30 race in 2020 and 2021. The stable is represented by Poet’s Dawn in the race today.
The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 3.30 Hoof It Hoof It (won off 62 down 4lb to 58); 4.00 Twelfth Knight (won off 86 down 6lb to 80); Bay Breeze (won off 84 down 11lb to 73); 4.30 Poet’s Dawn (won off 71 down 4lb to 67)
CARIBBEAN WIND (3.00) trained by J Channon, West Ilsley, distance of 213 miles. JUST TEN HIGH (3.00) trained by D Cunha, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles. NATSUMI (2.30) trained by Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Ins, Droitwich, distance of 160 miles
MISS HATHAWAY has been running consistently well in defeat all season and the application of a first-time tongue-tie may bring about the required improvement to see her score for the first time here. Lovely Spirit is an obvious threat to the selection having made the frame on both previous starts, while Natsumi edges out Tutu Star to be the pick of the remainder
WIN: MISS HATHAWAY
DANGER: LOVELY SPIRIT
CARIBBEAN WIND failed to fire when fifth at Leicester a couple of weeks ago, but she was second on both of her previous starts and it would be no surprise to see the daughter of Bated Breath bounce back here. Kodenza has displayed ability on both outings to date and should not be discounted, while similar comments apply to Doralee and Glowchester
WIN: CARIBBEAN WIND
KODENZA
WOOBAYwas onlybeaten a length in a strongerrace than this atYork nine days ago and that followed a success overthis C&D earlierinJuly With that in mind, the five-year-old has to be ofinterest back against herown sex here. Origintrail is anothereasing in grade who has to be considered, while Hurt You Never and Jenni complete the shortlist.
WIN: WOOBAY
DANGER: ORIGINTRAIL
Fortamour is a five-time C&D winnerwho produced a solid effort to hit the frame in a class 4 event at Thirsk on his latest outing and he should go well off an unchanged mark. However, thevote goes to BAYBREEZE,who sported first-time cheekpieceswhen he finished fourth at York last month and he was kindly dropped 1lb for that display. The five-year-old accounted for Fortamour (second) and Twelfth Knight (third) when landing this contest last year and he looks the one to beat. International Girl completes the shortlist.
WIN: BAY BREEZE
DANGER: FORTAMOUR
Sandret got up to grab a place over a mile here last month and he takes a step back up in trip off a 1lb lower rating, so he has to be respected. However, POET’S DAWN looks the way to go Tim Easterby’s charge filled the runner-up spot over 1m in this grade at Pontefract on his latest outing and he goes off the same mark today. The nine-year-old should have no issueswith this longertrip and he could prove hard to beat. SecretWorld is another to keep an eye on.
WIN: POET’S DAWN
DANGER: SANDRET
Rogue State has shown a fairamount ofabilityin herfourstarts in maiden companyand she has now switched to the David O’Meara yard, so it will be interesting to see how she fares on her handicap debut in a first-time hood. However, the in-form HAVANA PRINCE is hard to get awayfrom. The son ofHavana Greyalreadyhas two C&Dvictories to his name and he continues to go from strength to strength after scoring at Redcar off 3lb lower last time. Due Consideration is another to note.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. This is as good an opportunity as CARIBBEAN WIND is likely to find and it will be disappointing should she fail to deliver The Bated Breath filly was too free back from a three-month break at Leicester recently and she will hopefully settle better here with that run under her belt. This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

The final race on today’s card is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
