Good afternoon one and all and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for our Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting!

Over eight days the festival visits eight Yorkshire courses, highlighting the variety and quality of racing in the county. We have six races this afternoon with the feature race, the Ripon Bell-Ringer Handicap, at 3.55. Last year’s winner, Mr Curiosity, looks set to make a bold bid to defend his crown.

His stablemate, the aptly named Garden Oasis, notched his sixth win at the Garden Racecourse earlier this month and it will be interesting to see if he can move within one of Piper’s Note’s record of eight wins here when he contests the Sky Bet Supporting Matt Hampson Foundation Handicap at 4.30.

The Matt Hampson Foundation has been chosen by Graham Lee and his family as the partner charity of the Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival. They will be collecting as you leave the racecourse today so please give anything you can for what is a great cause.

Looking ahead to August we have five meetings over a very busy three week period. The William Hill Great St Wilfrid meeting on Saturday 17th August is always a real highlight of the season and we’ll have lots of family entertainment on Family Olympics Day – which coincides with the Olympics closing ceremony – on Sunday 11th August and Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 26th.

We hope you have a wonderful afternoon!

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

MISSION COMMAND put his debut effort well behind him when making the frame over 6f at Doncaster and he could easily take another step forward. George Scott’s juvenile may only need to find normal progression in order to go one better. Fallen Soldiershowed more abilityon his second startwhen fifth at Chesterand could get into contention, while any market confidence behind Ziggy’s Triton should also be noted.

WIN: MISSION COMMAND

RACE 2

FALLEN SOLDIER

Sustained and Flowstate are both searching for their second victories in three starts, with slight preference for the latter after his second at Doncaster last week. However, they could both find it tough to give penalties away to SONDAD Michael & David Easterby’s three-year-old finished a close-up fourth at Doncaster last month and that level of form could be good enough to see him get off the mark.

WIN: SONDAD

RACE 3

Cockalorum, who claimed this prize back in 2019, produced another good effort to finish a close-up third off 1lb lower at York and this drop in trip won’t pose him any issues so he has to be respected However, he could come out second best to PREPSCHOOL, who wasn’t disgraced at Sandown earlier in the month and he might be the one to beat off the same mark. Last-time-out winner C&D winner Up The Jazz completes the shortlist. WIN: PREPSCHOOL

COCKALORUM

RACE 4

Sea King showed a likeable attitude when getting up close home to justify even-money favouritism over 1m5f atAyr, but this 4lb rise maybe tough to defy so a chance is taken on SHADOW DANCE. Roger Varian’s charge disappointed in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot, but the return to a slower surface could help to get him back on track. Fox Journey heads the remainder

WIN: SHADOW DANCE

RACE 5

DANGER: SEA KING

TITAN ROCK has struggled to land a blow on his last two outings, but John & Sean Quinn’s six-year-old lifted the Thirsk Hunt Cup off just a 1lb lower mark back in May and a return to that sort of form might make him difficult to beat. Thunder Roar was a disappointing favourite in that event, but he was in fine form prior and could easily bounce back. Garden Oasis shouldn’t be far away either

WIN: TITAN ROCK

RACE

6

DANGER: THUNDER ROAR

After being beaten just a neck over this trip at Thirsk earlier in the month, NORTHERN PRINCE looks primed to go one better, with just a 1lb rise in the ratings to negotiate. Hurstwood hasn’t been far away off this mark of late and he should make his presence felt once more, while GisASub is on a lowlyfigure that could be exploited.

WIN: NORTHERN PRINCE

DANGER: HURSTWOOD

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACEFORM

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is a Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of six furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

The Matt Hampson Foundation inspires and supports young people seriously injured through sporting activity using the unique facilities of its Get Busy Living Centre.

The Centre was opened in Leicestershire during 2018 as the brainchild of founder and former Leicester Tigers rugby player

Matt Hampson who experienced a life-changing injury in 2005 during an England Under-21 training session which left him paralysed from the neck down, aged just 20

Coming to terms with his injuries, Matt chose to focus on what he could do rather than what he could not and to ‘get busy living’ which is the philosophy behind everything the Foundation does.

We help people to get busy living after life-changing injury – helping them back into work, education or sport, or supporting their adjustment to their new life.

The Centre provides expert physiotherapy, specialist personal training, mentoring, wellbeing and emotional support, and practical advice to people after life-changing injury

By becoming part of the community, beneficiaries can

draw on the experience and knowledge of others who have been on the same journey. They develop the tools and skills to move on in their lives. The Centre also allows them to be part of an active social scene as they focus on what they can do – not what they can’t.

Eventually beneficiaries are able to become the ones providing support to others which is a huge part of their rehabilitation.

All of our beneficiaries are getting busy living again post-injury and we are proud of them all.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 that have not won more than two races. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
