Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!
It’s been a very quick turnaround from racing last night and we are ready to go for Ladies Day! Our thanks to Grantley Hall and Jenny Roberts Millinery for providing wonderful prizes for the winners of our Best Dressed Lady and Best Hat competitions. Please join us at the Winners Enclosure at 2.45 either to take part or observe.
We also have a Best Dressed Gentleman competition this afternoon, sponsored by Harrogate Town AFC. Please join us at the Winners Enclosure at 2.10, after race 2, for a chance to win Matchday Hospitality to a Harrogate Town game in the 2024/25 season and tickets to the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting here next month.
On the track our feature race today is the Ripon Races Ladies Day Handicap at 3.55, featuring 2019 William Hill Great St Wilfrid winner Dakota Gold. He’s been back in great form of late and looks sure to go well but in what looks a highly competitive contest, a case can be made for all seven contenders, including Ripon regulars Bay Breeze and Twelfth Knight.
It’s amazing how quickly the season is flying by and we’re already at the half-way point but there is still plenty to look forward to. Looking ahead to July we have evening racing on Monday 8th followed by our Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting on Saturday 20th.
Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, and we hope to see you again soon.

T EASTERBY won the 1.35 race in 2022 and 2023. The stable is represented by Sameem in the race today.
The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 1.35 Vallamorey (won off 64 down 7lb to 57); 2.40 Impressor (won off 71 down 5lb to 66); Redrosezorro (won off 63 down 5lb to 58); 3.55 Bay Breeze (won off 84 down 6lb to 78); Mr Wagyu (won off 100 down 7lb to 93); Aberama Gold (won off 101 down 10lb to 91); Dakota Gold (won off 100 down 10lb to 90); 3.20 Garden Oasis (won off 77 down 7lb to 70).
GREATEST TIME (2.40) & LOOSE TONGUE (5.10) trained by D Evans, Abergavenny, distance of 214 miles. CLIFFTOP HEAVEN (1.35) trained by A Watson, Upper Lambourn, distance of 211 miles
Tim Easterby and Emily Roberts have successfully teamed up in the last two runnings of this contest, including with Sameem 12 months ago, but he is 5lb higher this time around and has no margin for error under top weight. Brodie Hampson was on the scoresheet at Newbury last week and she can go well aboard CLIFFTOP HEAVEN, who made the frame off this mark when bidding for a hat-trick at Haydock and this may be a little easier. A 2lb rise for a Catterick success doesn’t rule Stellarmasterpiece out.
WIN: CLIFFTOP HEAVEN
DANGER: STELLARMASTERPIECE
AN REALTA CARRAIG caught the eye staying on for fourth after a slow start on his debut at Wetherby last week. He is expected to come on for that experience and this extra half a furlong should also suit. Adrian Keatley’s colt is narrowly preferred to Lovely Spirit, who travelled well when third at Redcar first time out and the Richard Fahey-trained filly can take a step forward. Karl Burke’s Line Of Force looks the pick of the newcomers.
WIN: AN REALTA CARRAIG
RUN THIS WAY completed a double with plenty up her sleeve over C&D and, with conditions still on the testing side, she can continue to thrive bydefying a 7lb rise in her hat-trick bid. Dangers abound in the shape of Canaria Queen, who was only held by a neckwhen second offthis mark overslightlyshorteratWetherby, and Burj Malinka. The latter has been knocking on the door and also likes a bit of cut in the ground.
WIN: RUN THIS WAY
DANGER: CANARIA QUEEN
EYUP ITS THE BOSS was last seen finishing an excellent third after enduring a luckless passage in a stronger race over C&D and, off an unchanged mark, he should be tough to stop Last-time-out course winner Garden Oasis may emerge as the main danger, for all that the step up in trip asks a question of him. Hortzadar has the ability to play a hand in a race of this nature and, off 2lb below his last winning mark, he cannot be overlooked lightly
WIN: EY UP ITS THE BOSS
DANGER: GARDEN OASIS
DAKOTA GOLD is well into the veteran stage but added to his impressive CV when scoring gamely at Redcar, cutting out his own fractions before asserting close home. Upped 4lb, he gets thevote to make everyyard a winning one once more. Marine Wave couldn’t cope with a runaway winner when third over 5f at Hamilton, but that form has a solid look to it and she is not discounted now stepping back up in trip. Mr Wagyu is also respected after an Epsom near-miss.
WIN: DAKOTA GOLD
DANGER: MARINE WAVE
Filibustering arrives on the back of a career-best performance having romped home over 1m6f at Redcar However, the combination of an 8lb rise in the ratings and drop in distance may prove his undoing, with preference for fellow last-time-out winner MY NOBLE LORD. Michael Bell’s gelding looked more comfortable making all the running at Yarmouth and a 6lb higher mark looks far from insurmountable Chepstow scorer Continuance isn’t easily dismissed either
WIN: MY NOBLE LORD
DANGER: FILIBUSTERING
MAMBHA has posted two solid runner-up efforts over 7f since entering handicaps last month and compensation could await now upped to a mile. The daughter of Elzaam should relish this greateremphasis on stamina and she ticks the most boxes. The biggest threat may emerge from Evelyn’s Phoenix, who has held his form well since beating the selection at Redcar, while Loose Tongue opened her account at Chepstow at the end of May and she likely has more to offer too.
WIN: MAMBHA

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACEFORM
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. This particular handicap is limited to horses ridden by female amateur jockeys only

Having made light of an 18-month absence to score at Wolverhampton in May, CLIFFTOP HEAVEN encouragingly backed that up when third at Haydock 2 weeks ago and he makes a good deal of appeal for a stable who do well in these races. Stellarmasterpiece has made a bright start for Micky Hammond and along with last year’s winner Sameem, heads up the dangers. Can Can Girl also makes each-way appeal.

A few of these shaped with promise on their respective debuts without setting the world alight so it may pay to side with a newcomer in the shape of LINE OF FORCE. He appeals on paper for a yard boasting a smashing record with their juveniles and is of real interest before the benefit of market clues. This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.

This is a one mile, one and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
