Good evening and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for what promises to be a great evening of racing!

Our feature race this evening is the Wells Memorial Challenge Trophy at 7.35. This race is run in memory of all of the members of the Wells Family who have contributed greatly to the racecourse since its inauguration and continue to do so with our current Chairman, Andrew Wells, following in the footsteps of his forefathers. It looks a very competitive contest with many of the contenders coming here in good form.

It is a quick turnaround after racing this evening as we are back in action again tomorrow afternoon for Ladies Day. We have great prizes for Best Dressed Lady and Best Hat competitions from Grantley Hall, Jenny Roberts Millinery and Eden Reflex luxury handbags and music on the bandstand from the Baker Street Belles. We haven’t forgotten the Gentlemen either with a great prize from Harrogate Town AFC as well as tickets to the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival Saturday for the winner of the Best Dressed Gentleman competition.

Looking further ahead to July we have evening racing on Monday 8th followed by our Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting on Saturday 20th. Club Enclosure tickets are selling fast for that one so be sure to book early.

Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable evening of racing and we hope to see you again soon.

Very best regards.

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

COEUR JAUNE showed good early speed before fading into third on her debut at Nottingham a fortnight ago and she appeals as the most likely winner That said, both Charmsterand She Went Whoosh make appeal on paper and market support should be noted ahead oftheirrespective debuts Bacorhas produced a similarlevel ofform across both of her starts but will need a bit more to come out on top.

WIN: COEUR JAUNE

RACE 2

DANGER: CHARMSTER

Oligopoly sets the standard with an official rating of 80 and is an obvious candidate ahead of his stable debut. He hasn’t been seen for almost a year though, and so preference is for REBEL EMPIRE. Richard Hannon’s gelding hit the frame in handicap company at Windsor last time out and a similar level of performance might suffice. Newcomer Ice Pop is also noted.

WIN: REBEL EMPIRE

RACE 3

DANGER: OLIGOPOLY

In what is likely to be a tactical affair, KARDIA might be allowed an easy time of things on the lead and, given that this C&D holds no fears for Ed Bethell’s four-year-old, she may prove tough to peg back. Strawman holds solid claims from his current mark and looks the most likelydanger, while handicap debutantYurinovcan followthe pairhome.

WIN: KARDIA

RACE 4

DANGER: STRAWMAN

ZIGGY’S QUEEN put in a bold display to hit the frame when dropped to this level at Hamilton earlier in the month and the handicapper may have been kind to leave her mark unchanged. Richard Fahey’s filly may only need to reproduce that performance in order to get back to winning ways The main threat may possibly be Cash In, who filled the runner-up spot over C&D last time and could have a say on his handicap now. Moyola is another to consider after his triumph at Hamilton last Wednesday.

WIN: ZIGGY’S QUEEN

RACE 5

DANGER: CASH IN

Organic is aiming to complete a hat-trick in the space of a week for the in-form George Boughey stable after accounting for her nearest rival by over four lengths at Bath last time. However, she may be found out byVOLCANOLOGY in this contest. The daughter of Phoenix OfSpain ran too bad to be true on hernurserydebut atWolverhampton in October and she is worth another chance on her return to turf up in trip, while Dandy’s Angel looks the best of the remainder

WIN: VOLCANOLOGY

RACE 6

PROTEST RALLY bounced back to form when victorious by over a length in this grade at Musselburgh on his latest outing and turns out undera 5lb penalty. The four-year-old brings the best recent form to this event and may prove hard to beat. The main threat might be Prospect, who wasn’t disgraced in fourth at this level at Thirsk earlier in the month and he has to be considered off2lb lower. SassySoprano completes the shortlist.

WIN: PROTEST RALLY

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearolds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This six furlongs contest is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

OLIGOPOLY proved very disappointing when trailing in last of 11 in a Curragh nursery on his final start for Joseph O’Brien in July Gelded/changed hands for 11,000gns thereafter, his previous efforts would be enough to see him very competitive in a race of this nature, so he gets the narrow vote to hit the ground running back from 11 months off Rebel Empire can give him most to think about, whilst Ice Pop, Flowstate and Canon’s House are a trio of newcomers to note

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 49 to 68. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
