Good evening and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for what promises to be a great evening of racing!
Our feature race is the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap over 6 furlongs at 7.55 and it looks a very competitive affair with Ripon favourites Fortamour, a five-time winner here and Bay Breeze, who has four course wins to his name, in the line-up. Twelfth Knight won here twice last season and Abate, Strong Johnson and Havana Pursuit all have winning course form too so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top this evening.
We are next in action later this month with a double header. We have evening racing on Wednesday 19th June followed by Ladies Day on Thursday 20th June. We have prizes from Grantley Hall and Jenny Roberts Millinery for our best dressed lady and best hat winners respectively. We also have a best dressed gentleman competition with a prize from Harrogate Town AFC up for grabs.
Looking further ahead to July we have evening racing on Monday 8th followed by our Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting on Saturday 20th. Club Enclosure tickets are selling fast for that one so be sure to book early.
Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable evening of racing and we hope to see you again soon.
Very best regards.

The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 7.25 Makalu (won off 57 down 4lb to 53); Star Shield (won off 75 down 6lb to 69); Vondelpark (won off 67 down 8lb to 59); Garden Oasis (won off 77 down 9lb to 68); 7.55 Bay Breeze (won off 84 down 4lb to 80); 8.25 Betweenthesticks (won off 70 down 3lb to 67); Refuge (won off 70 down 7lb to 63); Zuffolo (won off 71 down 7lb to 64); Street Life (won off 64 down 15lb to 49); Speedacus (won off 78 down 16lb to 62).
BETWEENTHESTICKS (8.25) trained by J Channon, West Ilsley, distance of 213 miles SALAMANCA LAD (9.00) trained by D & C Kubler, Lambourn, distance of 211 miles
MANHATTAN MIRAGE (6.55) trained by D F Davis, Lambourn, distance of 211 miles SONIC BLUE (6.20) trained by T Dascombe, Lambourn, distance of 211 miles SPEEDACUS (8.25) trained by J Butler, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles. WATCH BLUE POINT (6.20) trained by J Tate, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles. ART DESIGN (6.20) & DARK SUN (6.55) trained by W Haggas, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles
There was a good word for SONIC BLUE prior to his Doncaster debut and he didn’t disappoint. What he actually achieved there remains to be seen, but the performance was good enough forconnections to aim him at the National Stakes, onlyforsoft ground to rule him out of that Sandown assignment. Loom was fancied for a good race at York, although the chiefthreat could come from the unraced brigade, ofwhichArt Design and Marshman’s expensive half-brother Artagnan make most appeal.
WIN: SONIC BLUE
DANGER:ARTAGNAN
MANHATTAN MIRAGE pushed the smart Balmacara to a head at Doncaster and probably performed to at least the same level when seventh in a traditionally strong maiden at the Craven meeting. Gelded since, it doesn’t need to improve him too much. Golden Strike made it second-time lucky with the minimum of fuss at Ayr but, like surprise York runner-up Elegant Call, he lacks a competitive outing in 2024. Dark Sun also reappears, after wind surgery and in a first-time tongue-tie.
WIN: MANHATTAN MIRAGE DANGER:
MAKALU didn’t get the best of runs over C&D recently, but James Sullivan didn’t panic and eventuallyproduced Ruth Carr’s five-year-old to get up close home. Considering his checkered passage, a 2lb rise might underestimate the merit of that performance, and he haswon offmuch highermarks in the past. Saisons D’Orwas rewarded forsome fine efforts in defeatwith a Catterickvictoryand he heads a list ofdangers that also includes Garden Oasis, Little Ted and Star Shield.
WIN: MAKALU DANGER: SAISONS D’OR
INTERNATIONAL GIRL finished fourth despite her wide trip in a class 3 event over C&D last month and she was dropped 1lb. Richard Fahey’s mare takes a drop in grade and can get her head back in front, with Twelfth Knight, who wasn’t disgraced in fifth at Thirsk last time, put forward as the main danger. Of the remainder, Bay Breeze makes the most appeal.
Herakles has been running well of late, including when third in this grade at Beverley last month, and he should remain competitive off an unchanged mark. However, the vote goes to BETWEENTHESTICKS,who finished midfield in a class 4 event at Windsor recently and was dropped 3lb. The handicapper seems to have given him a chance and he looks the one to beat Street Life returns to the handicap ranks and is another to note
GEORGIE WOOSTER put his three underwhelming efforts in novice/maiden company well behind him when accounting for his nearest rival by just over a length on his handicap debut at Redcar last time.Tim Easterby’s three-year-old is only 6lb higher and rates the one to beat. Angel Of The Bay filled the runner-up spot over 7f at Redcar on his latest outing and is likelyto be on the premises offthe same mark. Of the remainder, Curious Mrs Fox makes the most appeal.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of six furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

The return to Ripon coupled with change of headgear could be just what GARDEN OASIS needs and if that does prove to be the case, he’s certainly on a very workable mark. Makalu is the obvious alternative up just 2lb for his recent C&D win, with Sarsons d’Or completing the shortlist.

It is a real pleasure to be sponsoring the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap at Ripon this evening, a Class 4 event stagedoversixfurlongs.
Of the nine set to go to post, four are course and distance winners including Ben Haslam’s Fortamour. The experienced eight-year-old is five from 16 at the track and had a nexttime-out winner back in second when an impressive winner here two starts back, thepairwellclearofthefield. He foundhimselfalittletoofarbackona quicker surface last time but caught the eye with how he stayed on into fourth, althoughwouldprobablyprefer asoftersurfacethanisexpected.
Abate is dangerous dropping back in class from a sliding mark.
Bay Breeze was behind that rival in April but has a 50% strike rate here at Ripon, four wins from eight starts. Tim Easterby’s five-year-old has been well held the last twice but appears well handicapped from a mark of 80 on the pick of last season’s form. The trainer also runs Havana Pursuit, an all-the-way novice winner here over the minimum trip last season. The four-year-old is perhaps the most unexposed contender in this field but may just need the run on seasonal reappearance.
Adrian Nicholls’ Abate was denied by just a head in a Class 2 event here to closethelastcampaignandhasbeen runningwellinsimilartopcompanyin three starts this term. The eight-yearold finished fifth in a strong handicap at York’s Dante Meeting last time and is dangerous dropping back in class fromaslidingmark,nowjust1lbhigher thanhislastwinningmark.
Paul Midgley’s Twelfth Knight also steps down in class, the five-year-old winning over track and trip the last time he contested Class 4 company. Theservicesof5lbclaimerAlexJarywill aid his chances from top weight here. ThetraineralsosendsStrongJohnson, who must bounce back from a belowpareffortatYorklatestbuthismarkhas nowdroppedbelowhislastwinningturf mark.
Richard Fahey’s International Girl was inconvenienced by track position when fourth here last time but should improve for that reappearance effort, droppedapoundbythehandicapper. The six-year-old is winless since September 2022 but has proved a consistent performer, outside of the top four just twice in her last seven starts.
SybilCharm has been in fine form on the All-Weather of late, notching up three wins in 2024, but has yet to win onturf.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 49 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
