Good afternoon and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse! It’s hard to believe that we are already a quarter of the way through our 2024 season and that the end of May is upon us but we’ve got plenty to look forward to in the coming months. Indeed, we race again next Wednesday evening followed a couple of weeks later with a double header on Wednesday evening 19th June with Ladies Day the following afternoon of Thursday 20th June.
We have a great afternoon of racing in store today with the Ripon Cathedral Handicap, at 4.20, looking particularly competitive Ey Up Its the Boss won over today’s distance at our last meeting and faces a host of fellow course winners today in the shape of Cockalorum, Zarabanda, Baryshnikov and Rogue Sea.
We have some free activities for kids in the Course Enclosure this afternoon, such as face paints, balloon modelling and bouncy castle and our charity partner for the day is RNLI Boroughbridge.
Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of racing and we hope to see you again soon.
Very best regards.

WEIGHTWATCHER
The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 4.20 Titian (won off 83 down 4lb to 79); 5.25 Gunnerside (won off 59 down 4lb to 55); Fylingdale (won off 53 down 5lb to 48).
STABLE MOVES
4.20 ROGUE SEA has moved from Tom Clover to B Smart.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 28th May.
George Boughey has two runners here with Hello Youmzain filly Beronia possibly the pick of the two, but she will need to be a smart performer to get the better of SUBSTITUTE, even in receipt of 7lb. Charlie Johnston’s filly made an excellent start to her career when scoring a shade cosily over C&D and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if she backed that performance up. PrettyThing and Royalty Bay are others likely to make an impact on their racecourse bows
WIN: SUBSTITUTE DANGER: BERONIA
Asmall field may see this turn tactical and if that is the case, Loddon may try to make all the running and have an easy time of it on the front end. CHILLED OUT showed some serious improvement towin on his first start forMichaelWigham followingwind surgery and a 5lb penalty may not stop him from following up. Jewel Maker has to do more, but with eight career wins he is hard to ignore.
WIN: CHILLED OUT
DANGER: LODDON
FIRST ENCOUNTER looks likely to go well despite carrying 1lb more than his allotted mark. Put in his placewhen second at Redcaron his first run forsix months, hewas a long wayclear of the third and has everychance in his attempt to gain his first career success. Medician Starmight go close in first-time cheekpieces underthe in-form DannyTudhope, while Bitcoin Profit has awin to his name this season and cannot be ignored back on turf
WIN: FIRST ENCOUNTER
MEDICIAN STAR
EyUp ItsThe Boss scored overC&D last time and anotherbold bid can be expected, but he may struggle to defy a 5lb penalty for that head success. Therefore the preference is for LOYAL TOUCH, who was a good second over the extended 1m2f at Chester on his penultimate start - the winner has since confirmed that form - and the four-year-old might prove a tough nut to crack, should he arrive here in similar form. Titian could also have a say off 4lb lower than his last winning mark.
WIN: LOYALTOUCH DANGER: EY UP ITS THE BOSS
LA LA LUCRATIVE ran a good race when he was beaten just a neck over 6f at Catterick last week and this looks a good opportunity to go one better today. Gemma Tutty’s charge looks primed to offer another bold bid, especially being 3lb well-in compared to future events. Raft Upwon over6fat Newcastle earlierthis month but a 5lb rise maynot be easy to overcome, while Woodleigh is also capable of staking a claim. WIN:
PROTESTRALLYblewhis chances at the startwhen beaten just fewerthan two lengths over 5f at Hamilton earlier this month and he would hold solid credentials with a more alert start on this occasion. Liam Bailey’s charge has been eased by the handicapper which could be the perfect tonic Ernest Rutherford shaped as if this extra yardage would suit when sixth over 5f at Catterick last time and he can get involved, while Fircombe Hall is also worthy of consideration.
WIN: PROTEST RALLY

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Betting Forecast: 15-8 Substitute (IRE), 7-2 Beronia (IRE), 5-1 Pretty Thing (IRE), 6-1 Royalty Bay (IRE), 7-1 Sunshine Soul (IRE), 50-1 Midnight Starlight (GB)
SUBSTITUTE overcame inexperience and a tardy start when a ready winner over C&D 11 days ago and with the prospect of more to come, is very much the percentage call. The quartet of debutantes all make appeal on paper, particularly Beronia and Pretty Thing and the market may well help split them.

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 55. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 51 to 70. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
