Good afternoon and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for Traditional Family Day!
We welcome Wooden Spoon for their annual charity raceday. The charity is dedicated to helping children who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve their lives. Please check out page 14 of the racecard for more details of the great work the charity does.
We have a great afternoon of racing in store with the feature race, the British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap at 3.15. International Girl finished runner-up in the race last year and bids to go one better on her seasonal return. Glorious Angel, a winner here last month and the admirably consistent Origintrail, a winner over this course and distance, are also contenders in what looks a very open contest.
We are joined on the bandstand today as is tradition on Traditional Family Day, by The Ripon City Band. We have lots of free family entertainment in the Course Enclosure and we hope you all have a wonderful day with us. We are next in action on Thursday 30th May, which falls during the half-term holidays so we hope to see plenty of you again then.
Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
Very best regards.

The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 1.45 Foreseeable Future (won off 63 down 4lb to 59); Lotus Rose (won off 69 down 6lb to 63); 3.50 Golden Melody (won off 70 down 3lb to 67); Flight Of Angels (won off 72 down 4lb to 68); 3.15 Mersea (won off 73 down 3lb to 70); Radio Goo Goo (won off 86 down 3lb to 83); The Big Board (won off 92 down 3lb to 89); 55 down 9lb to 46).
The following horses are running today in a race at least two grades lower than their previous race:
1.45 PHOENIX BEACH (down 2 grades); 4.25 DANDYCAN (down 2 grades); 4.25 DUELY SPICED (down 2).
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 17th May.
Several have decent chances but perhaps those drawn lowcould have an advantage given the way recent sprint races have panned out at this venue. With that in mind, and with the speedy Son Of Sampers and Honour Your Dreams positioned close by, this could unfold to suit LATIN FIVE, who benefitted from a strong tempo when he won over C&D last summer Still competitively weighted, Paul Midgley’s gelding shades preference over Object and High Opinion, who are respected but have wide berths to overcome.
WIN: LATIN FIVE
DANGER: OBJECT
WilliamHaggasboastsahealthystrike-rateatRiponandmayenhanceitwithTITIANBLUE, a daughter of Blue Point whose value shot up from 72,000gns as a foal to 170,000gns as a yearling. As a half-sister to five winners, including the Listed-placed Tea Dance, the selection holds obvious appeal on pedigree and is readily suggested as the first one to consider Substitute and Thecoffeepoddotco are other notable debutantes, while Night In Paris was a promising second in a novice over C&D on debut last month.
WIN: TITIAN BLUE
DANGER:
A full-sister to a 1m2f winner, SEA REGAL was only a length and a half behind the subsequent 1000 Guineas winner, Elmalka, when she finished third in a 7f novice at Southwell last November and is bred to flourish now she steps up in trip. On a literal reading,TwilightVision,WinterLife and Little Heron all need to find some improvement. Perhaps the first-named of that trio could exploit any weakness if the new distance troubles the William Haggas-trained filly.
WIN: SEA REGAL
DANGER: TWILIGHTVISION
Punters will need to be in a forgiving mood to side with GLORIOUS ANGEL, but it may pay to do so. Grant Tuer’s charge was taken off her feet over 5f at Longchamp in a Group 3 most recently, but she can return to winning ways back up to 6f with her sights lowered. Game Breakerwas last seen running out a cosywinner over 6f at Thirsk last season and she warrants respect on her debut for a new stable, while Origintrail is capable of being in the mix.
Narrowly denied in the shadows of the post over C&D in a similar contest last month, GOLDEN MELODYgets the nod to go one place betterupped just 2lb this time around The return to a right-handed track can help Squeezebox be seen to better effect after a lacklustre effort at Bath most recently Ey Up Its The Boss is tackling this trip for the first time and shouldn’t be overlooked lightly
Although FOREVER EIGHTEEN posted onlya satisfactoryfifth at Bath earlierthis month, a first-timevisorcould spark his interest. Moreover, a 1lb drop in the ratings and a return to 6f can only help Nigel Tinkler’s gelding. The son of Mehmas makes most appeal, with the biggest threat forecast to come from handicap debutante Raffles Angel, who should appreciate this greater emphasis on speed. Louella and Big Blue Boy are also noted.
WIN: FOREVER EIGHTEEN
DANGER:
Having posted a staying-on fourth on his reappearance over7fat Doncasterlast month, TEES GEORGE looks ready for another crack at a mile. Adrian Nicholls’ inmate is only 2lb higher than his last winning mark and this drop into 0-55 company should prove fruitful. Kodebreaker arrives on the back of a close-up second at Wolverhampton and the five-year-old is feared most, ahead offellowin-form rival Calcutta Dream, whowon’t be found lacking for stamina.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

The Wooden Spoon Society began on the rugby field in 1983 when England finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations Championship. Since then, “Spoon” – as it is now affectionately known – has grown into one of the UK and Ireland’s fastest growing charities dedicated to helping children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve their lives while harnessing the spirit and values of rugby.
The charity comprises of 38 regional volunteer committees, a national HQ team, and over 10,000 members who wear the distinctive tie representing the colours of the 4 Home Nations. Regional committees undertake local fundraising activities, with the money raised being spent on projects within their local community. Today the Yorkshire Committee proudly celebrates 32 years since its foundation on May 19th, 1992, during which it has provided over £2.4 million of funding to 105 projects within the region.
Today, Yorkshire “Spoon” celebrates our 29th anniversary Race Day at Ripon. We particularly thank Laurence McDougall and his fellow Directors of All Steels Trading for sponsorship of the first and fifth of our three named races on the racecard, and Paul Hammond MD of Hammond Associates, for his renewal of the 2nd race sponsorship. We also thank Spoon members James and Jane Hutchinson, and Jonathan Mullin of the Ripon Racecourse executive, and the racecourse staff, for their continued and valued support.

RACEFORM
This one mile, one furlong and 170 yards contest for fillies aged three-years-old and upwards is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a six furlong handicap race for fillies aged three-year-old and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Movement: Moving more for our mental health. Movement is important for our mental health. But so many of us struggle to move enough. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood or around your workplace, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 58. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

2023: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR
Hood worn by No. 3, 7. Blinkers, Tongue Strap worn by No. 5. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 2, 6, 7, 8.
Stewards Note:
CLOTHERHOLME: Following its run on 6/5/2024 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run. Betting Forecast:
4-1 Kodebreaker (IRE), 11-2 Tees George (GB), 6-1 Barossa (IRE), Clotherholme (IRE), 13-2 Calcutta Dream (IRE), 17-2 Makalu (IRE), 14-1 Run Simba (GB), 22-1 Ribkana (IRE), 28-1 Mintnthat (GB), 100-1 Missmimi (GB)
A tight-knit handicap in which CLOTHERHOLME edges the vote on the back of his unlucky-in-running Beverley fifth provided he is none the worse for his exertions at Hamilton. Wolverhampton runner-up Kodebreaker heads the list of dangers, although a solid case can also be made for in-form pair Barossa and Calcutta Dream. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.CLOTHERHOLME (IRE) 2.KODEBREAKER (IRE) 3.BAROSSA (IRE)
