Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the first meeting of the 2024 season at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse.
A lot has changed in the six months since we were last in action. We’ve invested heavily in expanding our Weighing Room, improving facilities over at the stable yard and we have a new Chairman, with Andrew Wells taking the reins from Nigel Clark. Andrew follows in the footsteps of his Grandfather, Arthur Wells, who was Chairman of the racecourse at the time of World War I and his Great Grandfather, William Wells, who was the inaugural Chairman of Ripon Race Company at its inception when the racecourse moved to where we currently stand back in 1899.
To celebrate 125 years of Ripon Race Company we are offering a free ticket to our meeting on Friday 10th May to anybody who purchases an advanced ticket for our meeting next Saturday 27th April.
We have some great action on the track this afternoon with the Ripon Cock O’The North Trophy, Ripon Silver Bowl and Armstrong Memorial all looking highly competitive and featuring some names which will be very familiar to Ripon regulars such as Fortamour, Bay Breeze and Cockalorum.
We are joined on the bandstand this afternoon by Freddie Cleary, a talented artist who is very popular with Ripon Racegoers, he will be performing throughout the afternoon.
Wishing you a great afternoon and we look forward to seeing you again soon! Very best regards.

WEIGHTWATCHER
The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 1.57 Noble Anthem (won off 85 down 7lb to 78); Hortzadar (won off 91 down 16lb to 75); 3.42 Kitsune Power (won off 91 down 9lb to 82); 4.17 Bay Breeze (won off 84 down 3lb to 81); Fortamour (won off 85 down 10lb to 75); Illusionist (won off 88 down 15lb to 73); Fools Rush In (won off 95 down 16lb to 79).
The following horses are running today in a race at least two grades lower than their previous race: 1.57 HORTZADAR (down 2 grades); 1.57 STRONGBOWE (down 2); 3.42 KNOCKBREX (down 2 grades); 4.52 UP THE JAZZ (down 3 grades); 5.25 DIAMAND DE VINDECY (down 2 grades).
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 16th April.
RACE 1
Ahighlyencouraging second at Pontefract earlierin the month, DO I DREAM must hold every chance under similar conditions off bottom-weight. The daughter of Mondialiste has run well here before and she is narrowly preferred to comfortable Thirsk scorer Hostelry, who has a 4lb penalty to overcome. Hortzadar could be revived by a return to this track, having finished runner-up in this contest last year off 5lb higher
WIN: DO I DREAM
RACE 2
DANGER: HOSTELRY
Related to a whole host of stayers, including a half-brother who won over 1m6f here, TOKYO BAYshould relish the step up in trip on this occasion and he already has strong claims on the form of his debut second at Nottingham last October Runner-up on each of his last three starts, Galactic Charm may have to settle for a place once more, while Flickering Halo arrives with similar claims having run with plenty of credit at Southwell the last twice.
WIN: TOKYO BAY
RACE 3
DANGER: GALACTIC CHARM
A tentative vote goes to the unexposed FENLANDER, who showed decent form as a two-year-old and could be well treated off a mark of 74 on his handicap debut. As a son ofTerritories, Pam Sly’s gelding is bred to go on heavyground, and he mayhave too much for the consistent Ingleby Archie, as well as Vince L’Amour, who caught the eye on his return with a strong placed effort at Catterick over 5f.
WIN: FENLANDER
DANGER: VINCE L’AMOUR
STRESSFREE was only beaten a length and a half into second in a class 3 event on his return to action at Doncaster last month and he competes off only 2lb higher David O’Meara’s four-year-old looks to have conditions to suit once again and he can take advantage of a drop in grade. Wintercrack is another who will relish conditions and she comes into this contest on the back of a victory at Pontefract. She has to be considered off a 6lb higher mark, while Maxi King completes the shortlist.
WIN: STRESSFREE
DANGER: WINTERCRACK
ILLUSIONIST finished over six lengths clear of the third over 5f at Thirsk last week and he remains on the same mark. The son of Hot Streak is 15lb lower than his last winning rating and should have no issues with this step up in trip, so he can go one better. Grant Wood ran too bad to be true over 7f at Southwell last month, as prior to that he had recorded a double, and he is well worth another chance. Of the remainder, Thornaby Pearl makes most appeal.
WIN: ILLUSIONIST
RACE 6
DANGER: GRANT WOOD
Summit rates a player based on her previous experience over this trip and can make an impact if raring to go on her debut for a new trainer However, UP THE JAZZ may be worth chancing with Ethan Tindall claiming a handy 7lb off his back. Running for a yard with a fine record in this race, the selection looks more solid than stablemate Batal Dandy and he may also improve for having been gelded since his latest outing.
WIN: UPTHE JAZZ
RACE 7
DANGER: SUMMIT
CLANSMAN thrived on heavy ground over 1m4f at Thirsk last week and, with his stamina not in doubt, the six-year-old is hard to oppose, especially as he is 1lb well-in under a 5lb penalty. Can Can Girl continues to creep down the ratings and can give the selection most to think about on her turf return. Val Bassett is up in trip but could be a surprise package if the first-time blinkers bring about any improvement.
WIN: CLANSMAN
DANGER: CAN CAN GIRL
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 80 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This one mile and four furlongs contest for horses aged three-years-old and upwards is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 80. To qualify for a handicap
rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

Stewards Note:
INGLEBY ARCHIE: Following its run on 23/3/2024 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed on the bend. Betting Forecast:
3-1 Vince L’Amour (IRE), 4-1 Ingleby Archie (IRE), 11-2 Emu War (FR), 6-1 Fenlander (GB), 15-2 Woodleigh (IRE), 12-1 Without Flaw (IRE), 14-1 Mr Irrelevant (IRE)
It’s probably worth giving another chance to INGLEBY ARCHIE, who hasn’t fired in a couple of runs on the all-weather this year but conditions won’t be an issue back on turf and he’s on a good mark for this handicap debut judged on his 2-y-o exploits. Vince L’Amour’s handicap debut third at Catterick represented a step forward and he is feared most ahead of Emu War.

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a six furlong handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
