LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerGood afternoon and a very warm welcome to the final meeting of the 2023 season at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse.
It’s hard to believe that our season is coming to an end, it seems like just yesterday we were preparing for it to start! Congratulations to Team Tim Easterby, winners of the £5000 first prize in the Ripon Stables Championship for the second consecutive year. Adrian Keatley’s team look set to take the £2000 second prize with the £1000 third prize en-route to Charlie Johnston’s yard.
Congratulations also to Twelfth Knight and his connections as he is crowned the 2023 Ripon Champion! He has managed two wins, a second and two third place finishes so far and he could add to that as he contests our feature race, the Ripon Cathedral City of the Dales Handicap at 3.30.
We are joined on the bandstand this afternoon by Rob Hiscoe, a very talented artist who is very popular with Ripon Racegoers, he will be performing throughout the afternoon. Our fixture list for 2024 is now confirmed and can be viewed on the back of the racecard as well as online at ripon-races.co.uk.
Wishing you a great afternoon and we look forward to seeing you again in 2024!
Very best regards.

RACE 1
Spanish Rock got off the mark at the second attempt at Redcar last month but he may struggle to give 7lb to KANDOO. Having shown promise in Ireland, Archie Watson’s trailblazing filly impressed when making all at Bath before losing little in defeat when only reeled in late on over 6f at Chelmsford last time. Of the remainder, Ingleby Ivy may not have been suited by testing ground at Beverley first time out and may do even better now.
WIN: KANDOO
RACE 2
DANGER: SPANISH ROCK
Miguel, Billiegee and Between Me And U all merit plenty of respect but MANNERISM could well prove to be better than his opening mark. Karl Burke’s gelding, a 90,000gns purchase, has shaped encouragingly in three Haydock novice events and could easily have more to offerhere. PickYourBattles sports a similarprofile and maybe boosted by first-time cheekpieces, while Half Moon Rising should not be written off
WIN: MANNERISM
RACE 3
DANGER: PICK YOUR BATTLES
Mr Trevor advertised his well-being when winning at Hamilton earlier in the week and commands respect under a 5lb penalty The three-time C&D winner Hurstwood and Hurt You Never are others to note. However, it may pay to take a chance on HOOF IT HOOF IT exploiting a drop in both trip and class after a lively effort from a wide draw in a class 5 event at Chester last time.
WIN: HOOF IT HOOF IT
RACE 4
DANGER: MR TREVOR
BRAZEN BOLTwon over6fatThirsk last time and thatwas awell-deservedvictoryafter some solid efforts in defeat. The son of Brazen Beau is now only 4lb higher and that makes him one to keep on the right side of. Twelfth Knight had Origintrail (second) and Abate (fifth) behind him when scoring over C&D on only his second start for the Paul Midgley stable and he could continue to improve
WIN: BRAZEN BOLT
RACE 5
DANGER: TWELFTH KNIGHT
PRINCESS KARINE is a very solid performer who arrives here on the back of a win in a similar event at Musselburgh a couple of weeks ago. The daughter of Aclaim is only 3lb higher here and that could prove to be lenient. May Blossom was a close-up third at Beverley recently and she should go well off a 1lb higher rating, while Strong Johnson is also worth a second look.
WIN: PRINCESS KARINE
RACE 6
DANGER: MAY BLOSSOM
Slight preference is for FRANBERRI, who ran a highly encouraging race on her debut when dwelling at the start and running on well for second at Yarmouth. With improvement expected for that experience, she can get the better of the recent Kempton fourthTrust House and Kardia, who has a 7lb penaltyto overcome fora taking success over C&D in April.
WIN: FRANBERRI
RACE 7
DANGER: KARDIA
This can go the way of PLEDGEOFALLEGIANCE, who hinted at a return to form when a creditable third at Ascot over this distance in July Given a small break since, the son of Sea The Stars can return to winning ways with conditions likely to suit. It may be that the C&D winner Haizoom gives him the most to think about, although Moon King must be of interest as well.
WIN: PLEDGEOFALLEGIANCE
DANGER: HAIZOOM

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TIMEFORM
SPANISH ROCK showed a likeable attitude to get up at Redcar and George Boughey’s colt is fancied to defy a penalty to take his record to 2 wins from 3 starts. Kandoo is vastly more experienced than her opposition and appeals as the likeliest threat to the selection, whilst both Ingleby Ivy and Standring showed something to work on first time up and are also respected in a race which lacks depth.

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75

Horse
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

Fellow last-time-out winner Twelfth Knight has a fine C&D record and can be in the mix again, whilst this is a less-competitive affair than is often contested by Mr Wagyu and he also merits respect after a pair of good efforts in big-field events.

FIVE FURLONGS
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s three-year-old career

about TWO MILES
This is a two miles race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. In this race this is 8st 11lb for four year olds and 8st 2lb for 3 year olds. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PLEDGEOFALLEGIANCE had excuses on his last 2 starts and can bounce back returning from a short break. Haizoom took a step back in the right direction at Musselburgh 2 weeks ago and scored over this C&D in June off 2lb higher, so rates the main threat
