LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerGood afternoon and a very warm welcome to Bank Holiday Family Day at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!
We are renowned for our fantastic family days and we have loads of free fun for kids in the Course Enclosure this afternoon. We are also joined once more by Tom Roberts Jazz Band on the bandstand.
On the track we have a great afternoon of racing, featuring the British Stallion Studs EBF Ripon Champion Two-Yrs-Old Trophy at 3.35, a 6f Listed contest with £40,000 in prize money up for grabs. We are excited not only to see who adds their name to the roll of honour this afternoon but also how the careers of all of the contenders progress.
It is amazing how quickly the season flies by. It seems like just yesterday we were planning for the start of the campaign but after today we have just three meetings remaining. The next of those is tomorrow then we’re in action again next Tuesday 5th September before our season finale on Saturday 30th September.
Wishing you a great afternoon and we hope to see you again soon.
Very best regards.

ASADNA (3.35) & MAYSONG (4.10) trained by A Haynes, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles.
JERSEY ROCS showed plenty of promise when second behind a subsequent winner on his racecourse debut here recently and he ought to go verywell with the benefit of that experience. The main danger is likelyto beTownsend Manor after his Windsor third last month, whileVeiled Illusion could find some improvement ifhe manages to settle better on only his second start.
WIN: JERSEY ROCS
RACE 2
WIN: EXPOSED
DANGER: TOWNSEND MANOR RACE 3
It’s hard to get away from EXPOSED, who represents the in-form William Haggas yard and she sets the standard forthe others to aim atwith a rating of73.The three-year-old has hit the crossbar the last twice and she could improve for the step up in trip, which makes herdifficult to oppose. Sindri can give the selection the most to think about after her respectable third at Yarmouth, while Lukla looks best of the rest.
DANGER: SINDRI
Shagraan (second) had Asadna (third) behind on his penultimate outing at Newbury and he can confirm that form here. However, preference is for the highly-progressive SEVEN QUESTIONS, as he defied a mark of 88 on his nursery bow in comfortable fashion at Leicester last time. The son of Kodiac could take another step forward and make it fourwins from his last fourstarts.Task Forcewon nicelyon his debut at Salisbury and is also considered.
WIN: SEVEN QUESTIONS
DANGER: SHAGRAAN
Isla Kai has claims on his third in a valuable 7f handicap at Newbury last time, but it could pay to concentrate on the hat-trick seeking duo of KATHAB and Another Batt. Both began their winning runs over this C&D and are progressive, but the William Haggas-trained gelding’s form on a better surface tips the balance in his favour. He powered home to win well at Haydock and a 6lb rise maynot be enough to halt him.
WIN: KATHAB
DANGER: ANOTHER BATT
Despite not looking entirely at home on the idiosyncrasies of Brighton, CRYPTOS DREAM ran out facile winner over this trip a week ago and the decision to turn her out again quickly under a 5lb penalty looks a wise move. Dr Rio only found one too good when bidding for a double over the extended 7f at Beverley off this mark and he should give it a good go under top weight, while a recent silver medal over C&D off 3lb lower brings Mac Ailey into the equation.
WIN: CRYPTOS DREAM
RACE 6
DANGER: DR RIO
A big run from Mac Alley in the 4.45 here todaywould boost the claims of LITTLE TED, who had that rival back in second when recording a third C&D victory in style nine days ago and Tim Easterby looks to have found his in-form gelding a good opportunity to defy a 5lb rise. The main threat appears to be Dogged, who was far from disgraced in third when bidding for a 1m2f hat-trick at Pontefract and has been dropped 1lb for that effort. Billy Roberts can pick up the bronze medal.
WIN: LITTLE TED
DANGER: DOGGED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearolds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This one mile one fulong and 170 yard contest for three-years-old and upwards is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
