LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerGood afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!
It’s a quick turnaround for us after racing yesterday afternoon and the season is flying by. We have just five fixtures remaining after this evening but there’s plenty to look forward to yet.
Our biggest meeting of the season, featuring the William Hill Great St Wilfrid, is next on the agenda on Saturday 19th August. We then have a two day meeting at the end of the month with the always popular Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 28th August followed by racing on Tuesday afternoon 29th August.
We’re delighted to stage the David Chapman Memorial once again at 8.10 this evening. David was an excellent trainer, especially renowned for his talent for training sprinters such as Chaplins Club, Quito and Soba, who won a remarkable 11 races in 1982 including the Great St Wilfrid! David’s Granddaughter Ruth Carr has managed to win the race on a couple of occasions and bids to do so again with the in-form Spanish Angel this evening.
We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable evening with us and we hope to see you again soon.
Very best regards.

TEMPER TRAP has secured a double recently and he is hard to oppose in his bid for a hat-trick, even with 5lb extra to carry Jewel Of Kabeir showed a lot more on her return to the fraywhen third at Beverley last month and she goes off 1lb lower here. Chagall’s success at Lingfield last time over 1m2f also gives him an obvious chance.
WIN: TEMPER TRAP
DANGER: JEWEL OF KABEIR
Seven Questions and FIGHTING WREN may dominate this race, with preference for the latter after her pleasing debut effort at York. The daughter of Showcasing showed signs of inexperience on that occasion and did well in the circumstances to finish fifth. Seven Questions brings solid form to the table but does have to carry a 7lb penalty for his win at Yarmouth. Any market support for the 36,000-pound purchase Spanish Rock should be noted.
WIN: FIGHTING WREN
DANGER: SEVEN QUESTIONS
GRANNY BUDGIE failed to justify favouritism in a novice event at Lingfield last time, but she was far from disgraced in fourth on that occasion. The daughter of Massaat may be underestimated by an opening mark of 73, considering her debut victory at Nottingham. Alfa Whiteburd has decent form on soft ground and he could have a big say here. Of the remainder, Marie’s Secret makes the most appeal on her nursery bow.
WIN: GRANNY BUDGIE
DANGER: ALFA WHITEBURD
SEENDID struggled in a valuable handicap at Newmarket last month but a 4lb drop in the ratings, combined with these calmer waters, should only help William Haggas’ colt. Baileys Khelstar is likely to prove popular after running a fine race in defeat at Yarmouth last Tuesday and isn’t taken lightly off the same mark, with Dasho Lennie and Whispering Royal making some appeal too.
WIN: SEENDID
DANGER: BAILEYS KHELSTAR
Latin Five has proven to be a consistent performer of late and is likely to be in the mix once again but preference is forSPANISHANGEL Ruth Carr’s six-year-oldwon at Wolverhampton in July and can go one place better than his recent runner-up effort at Beverley. High Opinion was behind the selection in fourth that day and is a viable alternative, along with Malham Tarn Cove
WIN: SPANISH ANGEL
DANGER: LATIN FIVE
PROFITABLE EDGE finished a very respectable second on her seasonal/stable debut atRedcarinJuneandthedaughterofProfitableappearstohavebeenfoundasuitable opportunitytorecordafirstsuccess.YourSpirithasmadetheframethelasttwiceand a further 1lb drop in the ratings makes Paul Midgley’s filly of interest too, while C&D winnerJazzagal may do best of the remainder.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This is a one mile handicap race for four year olds and upwards which have been rated from 46-60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Our feature race this afternoon is held in memory of DavidChapman,whosadlypassedawayinMay2011.
Astalwart of Yorkshire racing, David is remembered as an excellent trainer with areputation for taking underachieving horses under his wing and getting the bestout of them.
David was especially renowned for his talent for training sprinters such as the prolific Chaplins Club, classy Quito and flying filly Soba. David’s Granddaughter Ruth Carr has followed in her Grandfather’s footsteps, ensuring that plenty of winners continue to come from the Mowbray House Farm base.
The race is now in its twelth year and it is an honour to have the Chapman family with us to present the winning owner of the race with asuperb trophy which they have kindly donated.

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.

Like most handicaps on the flat, this five furlong handicap for three-yearolds rated between 46 and 65 is also open to horses which are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is usually a disadvantage.
