TODAY’S TIPS 06 07 INFORMATION

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!

We have some great action on the track to look forward to with the feature race, The Wilmot-Smith Memorial Handicap at 4.30. The race is run in memory of all of the members of the Wilmot-Smith family who have contributed greatly to the success of the racecourse over the years.

We have plenty of activities for the children in the Course Enclosure this afternoon with Punch ‘n’ Judy and Magic Show from Professor Dan, face painting, balloon modelling, arts and crafts with Angels and Butterflies, inflatable slide and bouncy castle. Not forgetting the fancy dress competition, with tickets to Lightwater Valley to be won, which will be judged at the Yorkmix Gazebo at 3pm.

This is the first meeting of five in a typically busy August for us. We race again tomorrow evening and then again on Saturday 19th August, featuring the William Hill Great St Wilfrid which is always a real highlight of the season. We also have a double-header at the end of the month with Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 28th August followed by racing the following afternoon, Tuesday 29th.

We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable evening with us and we hope to see you again soon.

Very best regards.

RACE 1

Although NIGHTEYES was no match for the impressive Darnation at Thirsk last time, the David O’Meara-trained filly looks more than capable of shedding her maiden tag at this level and is hard to oppose. Roast Chestnut is entitled to build on her debut fifth at Windsorlast month and maygive the selection most to think about Treat OfTreats is an eye-catching newcomer and would be interesting with any market support

WIN: NIGHTEYES

RACE 2

WIN: JURI

RACE 3

DANGER: ROAST CHESTNUT

Corellian Star sets a fair standard judged on her two third-placed finishes at Nottingham and Leicester, but she could prove vulnerable to the well-bred newcomerJURI. RogerVarian’s filly is a full-sister toAjaya, who won the Gimcrack, and the daughter of Invincible Spirit could take some stopping. Havana Pursuit and Haworth Star may battle it out for the minor money.

DANGER: CORELLIAN STAR

MRS TRUMP posted another sound effort in defeat when runner-up at Doncaster last month and compensation could await off the same mark here. Ey Up It’s Maggie was far from disgraced when fifth of 19 atYork nine days ago and is feared most off 1lb lower. Storm Fox wasn’t at her best when upped to an extended 5f on her most recent outing and may prove more competitive returned to this distance.

WIN: MRS TRUMP

RACE

4

DANGER: EY UP IT’S MAGGIE

FORTAMOUR was second by a length behind Twelfth Knight over C&D in May, but he is now aided by an 8lb pull in the weights and the gelding may benefit from a return to softer ground. That said, Twelfth Knight cannot be discounted and is an obvious threat once again. Bay Breeze eases in grade and he could also get into contention.

WIN: FORTAMOUR

RACE 5

DANGER: TWELFTH KNIGHT

LERWICK made all to strike by two lengths over a mile at Pontefract last time and as he only carries 4lb extra, which could easily underestimate that success, the three-year-old can make it a double. The main danger could be Poet’s Dawn, who was a good second over C&D in this grade on his latest outing and has to be respected off 1lb higher Last-time-out victor Zarabanda completes the shortlist.

WIN: LERWICK

RACE 6

DANGER: POET’S DAWN

EASTERN CHARM has shown her incredible versatility recently with three victories all coming on different types of going. Therefore, the daughter of Kodiac is likely to prove difficult to beat, despite her 6lb penalty Violeta could put up the biggest fight, as a drop back to a mile seems a good move, while MisterSox makes the most appeal of the remainder.

WIN: EASTERN CHARM

DANGER: VIOLETA

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of five furlongs There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

While it’s somewhat disconcerting that JURI is equipped with a hood for this belated debut, she certainly wouldn’t need to be anything out of the ordinary to make a winning start here and confidence behind her in the betting would look significant. THE WEATHERBYS BLOODSTOCK PRO FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES

A small but select field go to post for the Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Fillies’ Handicap over five furlongs.

North Yorkshire-based Tony Coyle sends two in pursuit of success here in the shape of top-weight Ey Up It’s Maggie and Selby’s Pride Kevin Stott, fresh off two winners at the Glorious Goodwood Festival, takes the ride on the former, who looks to be the leading hope for the stable here. The five-year-old ran a good race in fifth when last seen at York under the steering of Paul Townend in the Jump Jockey’s Nunthorpe, and has now dropped down to her last winning mark when a stylish winner at Doncaster on seasonal return. Three times a winner on soft ground, conditions will be right in her favour here. The yard’s other runner, Selby’s Pride, was an impressive course and distance winner here as a juvenile back in 2021 and finished in the top three here at Ripon twice last term. The four-year-old has been disappointing on both starts this term and must bounce back down in trip here, although her mark has slid to 3lb below her last winning mark.

Ben Haslam’s Origintrail shares top-weight, and won on her only appearance at the track. The Profitable filly reached a peak rating of 85 last term following a victory at Chester but has struggled since and has dropped down to a tempting mark of 77 She returns to slightly calmer waters here but may just find the minimum trip a little sharp, with her best performances coming over six furlongs.

There are a trio of three-year-olds who take their chance here, including course and distance winner Star Of Lady M for David O’Meara. The Havana Grey filly proved to be a talented juvenile last term, finishing third at Glorious Goodwood behind The Platinum Queen before closing the campaign with a third in Listed company here at Ripon. However, she struggled from a lofty mark of 88 at the start of this season and her handicap mark has begun to slide A third and a second on her last two starts offer encouragement for connections that she has started to find her form again though. Mrs Trump is yet to shed her maiden tag, but has shown some solid form in defeat this term. Runner-up to a next time out winner three starts back at Beverley, she once again filled that spot last time out at Doncaster. Tim Easterby has a good record here at Ripon and the trainer teams up with David Allan for Storm Fox here. The daughter of Bungle Inthejungle is a full sister to Group 3 Molecomb winner Rumble Inthejungle and got off the mark at Thirsk back in June She must bounce back from a disappointing effort last time though, and her best efforts have come on quick ground so conditions may not be in her favour here.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

The final race on today’s card is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
