LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerGood evening ladies and gentlemen and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!
We have a great evening of racing in store with the feature race, the Ripon Directors Cup Handicap over 1m2f at 7.55. Plenty of the contenders come into the race in really good form and it looks a really competitive contest.
It’s great to welcome sponsors Bishopton Equine this evening and there’s a really interesting subplot to their sponsored race. The Bishopton Equine client, be it owner, trainer or jockey, who fared best in their race will receive £750 from the sponsors!
Team Charlie Johnston currently leads the way in the race for the £5000 prize in our Ripon Stables Championship. We’re at the half way stage now with plenty to play for including another 90 points this evening.
We’re next in action on Saturday 22nd July for the Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting. Club Enclosure is already sold out but Paddock and Course Enclosure tickets are still available.
Wishing you a great evening with us and we hope to see you again soon.
Very best regards.

JIM CROWLEY (4 wins from 24 rides, 17%) rides KATHAB (6.50).
The following horses are running today in a race at least two grades lower than their previous race: 6.15 GEOLOGIST (down 6 grades); 6.50 KATHAB (down 3 grades).
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 8th July.
The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 7.20 Saisons D’Or (won off 71 down 5lb to 66); Little Ted (won off 61 down 6lb to 55);
Global Spirit (won off 77 down 7lb to 70); Cosmos Raj (won off 77 down 8lb to 69); Copper And Five (won off 83 down 11lb to 72);
MERRY MINISTER (7.55) trained by E Walker, Upper Lambourn, distance of 211 miles.
ARIZONA DESERT (6.15) trained by A Haynes, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles
GEOLOGIST (6.15) trained by A Murphy, ALEX THE GREAT (8.30) trained by D M Simcock, COCO JACK (7.55) trained by G Scott, DESHI GIRL (8.30) trained by M Botti, KATHAB (6.50) & SANCTION (6.50) trained by W Haggas, all Newmarket, distance of 172 miles
Narrowly denied on her racecourse debut at Redcar in May, GEOLOGIST wasn’t disgraced when finishing 12th in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and she gets the vote on the drop in grade. The step back up in trip is another plus and she can see off the likes of Bellarchi, and Arizona Desert, who ran a highly-encouraging race on debut at Wetherby last month.
WIN: GEOLOGIST
DANGER: ARIZONA DESERT
KATHAB has been a shade disappointing since a promising runner-up effort in the Wood Ditton on debut, but he should find this to be easier as he looks to get off the mark at the fourth time of asking. The son of Kingman sets a lofty standard on ratings and is readily preferred to stablemate Sanction, while newcomer Knights Affair may need further in time.
WIN: KATHAB
WIN: SAISONS D’OR
This can go the way of SAISONS D’OR, who has run very well the last twice without getting his head in front. The eight-year-old may not have won on turf since May last year, but he is now 5lb lower than that mark and gets the vote ahead of the recent course second Cosmos Raj. Copper And Five is another to note, while completing the shortlist are the likes of Diamond Haze, Ey Up Its The Boss and Little Ted.
DANGER: COSMOS RAJ
COVERDALE arrives having made it three on the bounce at Haydock on his latest start and the manner of that victory suggested he could have more to offer, despite a 4lb rise from the handicapper. Merry Minister got off the mark at the third attempt at Thirsk last month and an opening mark of 80 appears to be workable Coco Jack ran with credit at Royal Ascot and is respected along with My Little Queens.
WIN: COVERDALE
WIN: ALEX THE GREAT
DANGER: SANCTION RACE 6
DANGER: MERRY MINISTER
ALEXTHE GREATis bred to staywell and the son ofCamelot is expected to benefit from a more galloping track than he encountered when making his handicap debut at Lingfield last month. Edwina Sheeran went up 4lb for her recent C&D success and she is likely to pose the main threat to the selection. Churchella is best judged on her second at Leicester in May, while both FutureTimes and BlueAntares could benefit from first-time visors.
DANGER: EDWINA SHEERAN
FORTUITOUSSTARdropsbackto6fafterapromisingreturnwhenthirdatNewcastle, having pulled hard in the early stages, and Grant Tuer’s filly appears to have been found a solid opportunity to shed the maiden tag. Glendown has been in consistent form on his latest starts and commands plentyofrespect, while MrsTrump, who filled the runner-up spot at Beverley last time, and Aurora Glory can fight it out for the minor honours.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This six furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

This one mile contest for horses aged three-yearsold and upwards is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Saisons D’or is respected on the back of 2 placed efforts last month, while Zumurud is back on a winning mark and the booking of Tom Marquand suggests that a bold run might be on the cards.

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85.

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 55. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

SIX FURLONGS
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
