LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerGood afternoon and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for Ladies Day!
Our thanks to Ladies Day Marquee and Best Dressed Lady sponsors Grantley Hall, Best Hat sponsor Jenny Roberts Millinery and our presenting partners Your Harrogate. With some great prizes on offer I’m sure both will be well contested as ever. Please join us at the Winners Enclosure at 2.55 to take part or to observe.
On the track we have seven races, kicking off with the Ladies Day Derby at 1.45. Ripon staged the first recorded race for Lady jockeys back in 1723 and its great to kick off our Ladies day 300 years later with the Ladies Day Derby!
We have music on the bandstand today from Ed Sheeran tribute artist, Tom and in the Ladies’ Day Marquee from Frankly Jazz. Remarkably today we reach the half-way point of our season but there is still plenty to look forward to. We’re next in action on the evening of Monday 10th July followed by the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting on Saturday 22nd July.
We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day with us and we hope to see you again soon.
Very best regards.

The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 1.45 The Resdev Way (won off 50 down 4lb to 46); 2.50 Woodlands Charm (won off 69 down 3lb to 66); Point Of Woods (won off 54 down 8lb to 46); Lezardrieux (won off 76 down 9lb to 67); 3.25 Significantly (won off 96 down 9lb to 87); 4.45 Cosmos Raj (won off 77 down 7lb to 70).

KING OF SPEED (2.50) trained by D M Loughnane, Kidderminster, distance of 165 miles.
ValleyOfFlowerswas an encouraging runner-up at Beverleyon herreappearance and is likely to prove popular here along with The Resdev Way, who only found one too good atWetherbylast time. The booking ofSerena Brotherton catches the eye onJamih, who is better than he showed at Thirsk last time in a race which signalled a return to form of HER WAY.The latterfinished an encouraging fourth there and could take some pegging back if adopting the same forcing tactics.
WIN: HER WAY
WIN: BARG
DANGER: VALLEY OF FLOWERS
All three previous winners, East Bank, Professor Tickle and Catton Lady have plenty to recommend them, but the unpenalised BARG may prove too good on this occasion in receipt ofweight. Karl Burke’s colt, whose price more than doubled from foal to yearling, shaped like a surefire future winner when a keeping on third of 14 on his recent debut over this trip at Thirsk and he can put that experience to good use.
DANGER: EAST BANK
Hurstwood probably ran better than ever when notching a third C&D success last time out but a 7lb rise might just prove too much to overcome, given that Indian Sounds goes unpenalised for a decisive success in an apprentices’ event at Pontefract last week, albeit over5f ClaimThe Stars also brings winning form to the table but anyvalue may lie with the well-handicapped C&D winnerWOODLANDS CHARM, who bounced back to form when a runner-up at Catterick recently.
WIN: WOODLANDS CHARM
DANGER: INDIAN SOUNDS
Hyperfocus struck in the Silver Sprint at this track last time and he is likely to be bang there once more, as he only goes off a 2lb higher rating. However, he could play second fiddle to ITJUSTTAKES TIME, who had Twelfth Knight (second) behind last time over C&D in a class 3 event. The five-year-old is fancied to make it three out of his last four for the Mark Walford yard. Significantly is of interest wearing first-time cheekpieces.
WIN: ITJUSTTAKES TIME
DANGER: HYPERFOCUS
GREEK GIANThas to carry6lb extra forhis latest success at Brighton in a classified stakes. The son of Teofilo looks to have found a golden opportunity to go in again and bring the treble up forthe in-form Ed Dunlop stable. The main danger might be Lough Leane, whowas beaten undera length in this grade atYarmouth on his latest outing and he could have a say off 1lb higher. Edwina Sheeran could get involved if she produces the form of her penultimate run.
WIN: GREEK GIANT
DANGER: LOUGH LEANE
SirJock Bennett and Rievaulx Raver both arrive in winning form, although the former only had three rivals to beat at Haydock and the latter had to share the spoils here.
Sir Michael Stoute doesn’t have too many runners at Ripon so it is perhaps significant that he sends FALCON NINE north, and the well-related son of Ulysses has been freshened up since his handicap debut fourth at Newcastle. Blueflagflyinghigh might be able to play a part too.
WIN: FALCON NINE
DANGER: BLUEFLAGFLYINGHIGH
The money arrived for BARROLO ahead of his seasonal/handicap debut over C&D and he didn’t disappoint, coming home a length and a half clear of Ribkana. There is likely to be much more to come from the Grant Tuer-trained grey and he can follow up. Bernie The Bear has occupied the runner-up berth on each of his last two outings and he can fight it out with Beverley runner-up Girl From Italy for that position here.
WIN: BARROLO
DANGER: BERNIE THE BEAR

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 This race is for female Amateur jockeys only which means these are not professional jockeys In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PLAY SMARTER
SAMEEM’s losing run tempers enthusiasm but he’s tumbled in the weights and, having shaped as if he’d come on a good deal for his comeback over shorter here 32 days ago, he could just be worth chancing with the cheekpieces refitted. Her Way hinted at a revival at Thirsk recently and along with Valley of Flowers, heads up the dangers.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight which here is 8st 9lb and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

4-1 Falcon Nine (GB), 5-1 Rievaulx Raver (IRE), 7-1 Nakano (IRE), 9-1 Sir Jock Bennett (IRE), Blueflagflyinghigh (IRE), 14-1 Flame Spirit (IRE), 16-1 Cosmos Raj (GB), Nefyn Dawn (GB), Western Beat (IRE), Maffeo Barberini (IRE), 20-1 Sandret (IRE)
Another chance is given to FALCON NINE as he continues to look well treated on the form he showed in an AW maiden last November and the step up to 1 1/4m should suit on pedigree. Nakano didn’t enjoy the rub of the green on her Redcar handicap debut last month and is second choice ahead of Haydock scorer Sir Jock Bennett
TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.FALCON NINE 2.NAKANO (IRE) 3.SIR JOCK BENNETT (IRE)

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 55 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
