LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerGood evening and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for what promises to be a great evening of racing!
Our feature race this evening is the Wells Memorial Challenge Trophy at 7.10, a race run in memory of all of the members of the Wells Family who have contributed greatly to the racecourse. It looks a very competitive contest and the Adrian Keatley-trained Another Baar, who currently leads the way in the £6000 to the winner William Hill Ripon Champion Bonus with seven points, will look to extend his lead at the top of the table.
We have our Best Dressed Gentleman competition this evening, in the Winners Enclosure at 6.40, and we are delighted to be joined by the competition sponsors Harrogate Town AFC who are putting up a great prize of matchday hospitality for two to a Sky Bet League 2 or cup match at the Envirovent Stadium in the 2023/24 season. We also have music on the bandstand this evening from regular Ripon favourites the Jailhouse Blues Brothers.
It’s a very quick turnaround after racing this evening with Ladies Day tomorrow afternoon. We have great prizes on offer from Grantley Hall for the Best Dressed Lady and Jenny Roberts Millinery for the Best Hat competition. We’ll also have music on the bandstand from a great Ed Sheeran tribute artist.
Very best regards.

INDISPENSABLE’s second-placed finish at Goodwood is working out better than expected, with both the third and fourth winning next time out, and a breakthrough success could be on the cards now dropped into a class 5 event. There were positives to be gleaned from Full Gambit’s debut third at Catterick earlier in the month and Amy Murphy’s filly looks most likely to chase the selection home, marginally ahead of Specific Times.
WIN: INDISPENSABLE
DANGER: FULL GAMBIT
BONDI BAY caught the eye when staying on into second place on her opening bid at Salisbury last month and could prove tough to beat with that experience now under her belt. Bright finished behind two subsequent winners when third at Wolverhampton in May and isn’t one to take lightly now stepped up to 6f on this switch to turf. Moralisa requires some improvement to topple the main protagonists but still makes most appeal of the remainder.
WIN: BONDI BAY
DANGER: BRIGHT
Bloomwithgrace ran to a similar level as his seasonal debut when runner-up in a fillies’ noviceatGoodwoodrecentlyandmayfinda2lbriseonthisreturntohandicapcompany leaves her vulnerable. Although Tom Dascombe’s charge still enters calculations, KHINJANI makes most appeal. The daughter of Sir Percy offered something to work with when staying on into third on her return to action at Redcar last month, while handicap debutant Anjo Bonita arrives in good heart and completes the shortlist.
WIN: KHINJANI
DANGER: : BLOOMWITHGRACE
ANOTHER BAAR arrives in search of a hat-trick of victories having defied a 10lb rise for an impressive C&D success at Beverley last Sunday. He carries a 6lb penalty for that latest victory and may prove to be a tough nut to crack. Mutaany is worth another chance following a below-par effort at Newmarket in a contest that has worked out well, while others to consider include Tribal Hunter and Rock Of England.
WIN: ANOTHER BAAR
RACE 5
DANGER: MUTAANY
ZIMMERMAN has produced two solid efforts in defeat this season, with a runner-up effort atThirsk backed upwith a fourth at Hamilton, and the four-year-old appears to have been found a suitable opportunity to get back to winning ways Knightswood wonhereonhispenultimatestartandcommandsrespect, whileAuldToonLooncould have more to offer having got off the mark at Haydock last time.
WIN: ZIMMERMAN
WIN: AZAIM
DANGER: KNIGHTSWOOD
AZAIM finished a creditable third over this trip at Carlisle earlier this month and Michael Dods’ inmate must hold every chance of being in the mix now in classified stakes company. He shaped as if further progression could be on the cards and is fancied to get the better of Zebadaay, who finished a fair fifth, also at Carlisle, on his most recent run. Bedazzling completes the shortlist.
DANGER: ZEBADAAY
Only denied by three-quarters of a length when finishing third at Southwell on his most recent run, Primo rates a big player on the pick of his form. However, a 2lb drop from CANARIA PRINCE’s latest outing could be what it takes for him to progress and Tim Easterby’s five-year-old rates the one to beat. Golden Gal and Hot Scoop are others worthy of consideration.
WIN: CANARIA PRINCE
DANGER: PRIMO

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

FIVE FURLONGS
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearold fillies. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be verylightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

INDISPENSABLE failed to build on her encouraging debut effort as expected when runner-up over 6f at Goodwood last month but that was still a solid enough display and a repeat may well be enough to see her off the mark at the third attempt now returned to the minimum trip. Full Gambit was getting the hang of things late on when third on debut at Catterick 3 weeks ago and can figure with progress likely Ziggy’s Queen and Specific Times complete the shortlist.

This six furlongs contest aged three-years-olds is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 56 to 75 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

SIX FURLONGS
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This race is a six furlongs classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that which here is 8st 8lb, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
