Good afternoon and warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for Traditional Family Day. We welcome Wooden Spoon for their annual charity raceday. The charity is dedicated to helping children who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve their lives. Please take a look at page 8 of the racecard to find out more.

We have a great afternoon of racing ahead and plenty to entertain the children in the Course Enclosure too with Professor Dan returning with his Punch ‘n’ Judy and Magic Show, balloon modelling, face painting, Cub Karts, Bouncy Castles and inflatables, the National Festival Circus and some football coaching sessions.

Our Goodbye Flys Stables Championship is beginning to hot up, Team Tim Easterby hold a narrow lead from Roger Fell with Charlie & Mark Johnston and Ben Haslam hot on their heels. There’s a long way to go to see which team of Stable Staff will claim the £5000 first prize and there’s 102 points to play for this afternoon.

Our feature race this afternoon is the ‘Ripon, Cathedral City of the Dales Handicap’ at 3.40 and we have some real course specialists on show.

Benadalid is a four-time Ripon winner and Fishable has managed three wins, whilst Copper and Five and Briardale have also won here.

It has been a long time between drinks for SPANISH ANGEL on turf, as his last win on grass came in June 2020, but he has been running really well of late and could be primed to strike here. Qaaraat must hold strong claims on his penultimate second at Catterick, while Gullane One is now 2lb below his last winning mark. Completing the shortlist are High Security, Refuge and Sunset Glow.

The form of GULMARG’s debut second at Pontefract has been franked by the third and fourth winning since and he is taken to go one better for his in-form stable.

Dukono wasn’t beaten far on his racecourse bow at Thirsk and the step up in trip is likely to suit, as it is for Shouldvebeenaring as well. Of the newcomers, Ti Amo Sempre stand outs in the Amo Racing colours.

DANGER: SELBY’S PRIDE

It may prove best to concentrate on the well-bred newcomers with the vote going to FIREBOLT. A daughter of Galileo out of a mare who placed in both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas, she is likely to stay well, coming from the family of Cesarewitch winner Sweet Selection, and represents a stable who are in decent form. Holocene, whose dam placed in several Group 1s, and Stars Are Born, a half-sister to a Group 3 winner, appeal most of the remainder.

SANDBECK made the perfect start for Edward Bethell when scoring on her handicap debut at Nottingham last month and, with further improvement likely, the daughter of Ardad makes plenty of appeal. Course winner Selby’s Pride faced a tough task from a wide draw at Chester last time and can produce a bold showing in this, while the class-dropping Improvised should also be competitive, especially if inding last year’s winning form.

Cases can be made for most in this field and recent Thirsk Hunt Cup fourth Copper And Five, who races beyond a mile for the first time, is an obvious candidate. However, Tim Easterby’s FISHABLE has registered all three of his wins over this course and distance and is narrowly favoured. Briardale shaped better than the result suggests at Ayr on his return last month and cannot be discounted either.

HAUNTED DREAM’s consistency speaks for itself, having not been outside the first two on his last five starts. Conditions look ideal once more here with Daniel Muscutt regaining the ride. His main dangers look to be Franz, who could be feasibly treated on his handicap debut, and Adjuvant, who wasn’t beaten far at Doncaster on his reappearance last month. Boulivar is capable of having a say in proceedings as well on his turf bow.

EAGLE PATH has displayed plenty of speed in the early part of her races over further before weakening in the closing stages. The drop to 6f on handicap debut is likely to bring about improvement as she attempts to get off the mark. Miss Britain ran well to finish third at Thirsk last Saturday and the filly is entitled to be in the mix once again, while others worthy of consideration include Eldeyaar, who was sixth in the aforementioned Thirsk contest, and Lincoln Pride.

The Wooden Spoon Society began on the rugby field in 1983 when England finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations Championship. Since then, “Spoon” – as it is now affectionately known – has grown into one of the UK and Ireland’s fastest growing charities dedicated to helping children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve lives, while harnessing the spirit and values of rugby. The charity is one of the largest funders of respite and medical treatment centres, sensory enhancement therapeutic facilities, specialist playgrounds, sports activity areas, and community-based programmes in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In partnership with the rugby community, both Union and League, we involve some of rugby’s top sporting role models who provide support and help raise awareness of its invaluable work The charity comprises of 40 regional volunteer committees in the UK and Ireland, a national HQ team, and over 10,000 members who wear its distinctive tie, representing the colours of the 4 Home Nations. Regional committees undertake local fundraising activities with the money raised being spent on projects within their local community. This year, the Yorkshire Committee proudly celebrates 30 years since its formation at Elland Road on 19th May 1992 and has since provided £2,203,475 of funding to 97 projects in Yorkshire.
