Good afternoon and a very warm welcome back to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for our first meeting of the 2022 season.

We start the afternoon with a presentation to our top trainer from 2021, Tim Easterby and top jockey David Allan. I’m sure we will be seeing both in the Winners’ Enclosure on a regular basis again this season.

For the 2022 season we are introducing a ‘Stables Championship’ in partnership with organic plant based grooming products manufacturer, Goodbye Flys. The stable staff of the yard that accrues the highest points total across the 2022 season will be crowned Champions and receive a £5000 cash prize, with £2000 going to the runners-up and £1000 to the third placed team. The top three teams will also receive a hamper of Goodbye Flys products.

Our feature race this afternoon is the Ripon Silver Bowl at 2.50 and although just the five runners go to post it looks very competitive. It’s great to see six-time Ripon winner Mark’s Choice return in the Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Handicap at 2.15. He certainly has every chance of matching or even surpassing the record of Piper’s Note, who was also owned by Cragg Wood Racing and managed eight wins here!

We have plenty of entertainment for the Children in the Course Enclosure this afternoon with the Big Bubbleman, bouncy castles, face painting and balloon modelling and we have music from great local artist Freddie Cleary on the bandstand. We hope you have a wonderful afternoon and we hope to see you again next Saturday for our St George’s Day meeting.

STAR OF LADY M made the perfect start to her career when scoring on easy ground at Redcar last week, getting the better of a couple of fillies with experience, and the daughter of Havana Grey can follow up. Beach Breeze attracted market support when finishing down the field in the Brocklesby and has the potential to improve, while Majil is a half-sister to the talented Spycatcher and may do best of the newcomers.

A case can be made for plenty in this field and the focus turns to BAY BREEZE, who proved himself on testing ground when landing a Beverley maiden in a busy juvenile campaign. Down in grade on his return, Tim Easterby’s gelding looks capable of making an impact off a mark of 67 and is given the edge over Moon Bay, who should benefit from the drop in trip. Miss Calculation was well fancied at Pontefract last time and is another to consider in first-time cheekpieces.

The Jedd O’Keeffe-trained KINCADE has improved significantly since stepping up in trip on his last outing at Southwell and seems every inch a stayer. He has an appealing pedigree and looks the one to be on. Trojan Horse won impressively last time out and is unexposed over this trip, likewise on soft ground. Tamilla, who is a full-sister to very useful Group 3 winner Precious Ramotswe, is another to take seriously as it is likely she’ll improve further up in trip.

Wakey Wakey is bound to be popular on handicap debut having shaped with promise on all three starts as a juvenile, though softer conditions may not be ideal. Preference instead is for BARNEYS GIFT, who finished last season with a commanding success at Redcar and could have more improvement in the locker over further. Wolverhampton runner-up Government can also have a say along with Musselburgh winner Chief’s Will.

Course winner WOTS THE WIFI CODE impressed on his return at Doncaster last month and, with the second going in since, there could be plenty more to come from the five-year-old as he looks to follow up. Fairmac must be respected for last year’s winning trainer, while Fast Medicine is of interest on his first go at this trip with Hollie Doyle taking over in the saddle. Last seen finishing fourth in the November Handicap, Skycutter could also have a say in proceedings.

Fortamour won over C&D last August and, having shaped nicely in a competitive heat at Doncaster on his latest start, looks set to go well. However, it is hard to get away from the course specialist MARK’S CHOICE, who landed this race on his first run after undergoing a wind operation last season, a sequence which may well be repeated again. Follow Your Heart drops in trip after a good third at Leicester last time and can also get involved.

In what looks to be a competitive handicap, all eyes are sure to be watching EMPIRESTATEOFMIND following a creditable third-placed run in the Spring Mile at Doncaster. As a half-brother to the useful Meaningful Star, the four-year-old shapes as though he will handle any type of ground. He retains his mark of 83 and seems very much the one to beat. Wizard D’Amour is another interesting type following a good run behind Seven Brothers at Doncaster, while Challet is noted too.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 56 to 75.

In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far.

The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
