A very warm welcome to Redcar’s richest race meeting of the season.
We’ve got a bumper day of racing ahead today with eight competitive races on the card. We’d like to thank the owners and trainers for their support today and hope you enjoy your day at the races.
First run in 1989 the Class 1 William Hill Two Year Old Trophy offers prize money of £150,000 and is one of a pair of Listed races on the card. Today’s race meeting sees the twenty-first running of Listed Racing TV EBF Stallions Guisborough Stakes worth £47,000, and the SDDE Smith Group Straight-Mile Series Final. The £45,000 Handicap contest is the culmination of a series of qualifying races held at Redcar throughout the summer over the straight mile, sponsored for the first time this season by the SDDE Smith Group.
We’d like to thank our sponsors William Hill, the European Breeders’ Fund, Racing TV, the SDDE Smith Group, and Market Cross Jewellers for their support of today’s race meeting.
We hope that you all enjoy your day out at the races today and hopefully back some winners.
Good luck!

iABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED
You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Redcar You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Redcar may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Redcar but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Redcar and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today. So now when you run through today’s runners and riders in the racecard you can identify which horses run well here at Redcar and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED
Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap?
In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated?
Once a horse has run at least three times in a Flat race, or run in no more than two Flat races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown.
In subsequent races if a horse runs better than its rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below its rating then it will be reduced.
Ratings start from around 30 at the lower end of the scale with the average top level horses rated roughly between 115 and 125. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes.
Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 71 & 85. So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in.
In this instance a horse rated 85 is 5 higher than a horse rated 80 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race. In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.

Star Ratings Explained - Each horse has a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating - The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed.
Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
HOW TO UNDERSTAND BETTING & FORM
Having a flutter is part of the fun of a day at the races.
P I C K YO U R W I NN ER
Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours whilst others go to the Parade Ring and pick their favourite looking horses. Alternatively, you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
W H E R E TO P L AC EYO U R BE T
You can place a bet in the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookies’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. Alternatively, you can place a bet at one of the many totepool betting points all around the racecourse or at the totesport betting shop on the ground floor of the Petch Stand, which is identical to a high street betting shop.
P L AC E YO U R BE T!
Decide how much you want to stake and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race has started. Keep your bet receipt safe as you will need this to collect your winnings. Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a Stewards’ enquiry’.

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
Blinkers
The hustle and bustle of a racecourse can be exciting for a racehorse and so Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
Visors
Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup. If you look at the two pictures in the examples you can just make out the difference. This slit enables a horse to see the other runners around them but still keeps the focus forwards.
Cheekpieces
Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. Horses who struggle to perform to their best because they are too keen in their races are often prime candidates for cheekpieces.
Eye Shields
Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. Often worn at all-weather tracks where the kick-back can fly into the horses faces, the purpose of them is to prevent anything going into the horses eyes.
Hood
Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. Padding around the ears restricts noise and helps to calm a nervous horse. Eye holes allow a full range of vision.
Noseband
Some horses can carry their head awkwardly high which prevents them performing at their best. A noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
Tongue Strap
Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping out. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race. You can just see it in the picture.

If you are new to racing the betting ring can seem very daunting, especially on a busy day like today. But once you get to grips with the terminology and the odds it can be a lot of fun looking around the Bookmakers’ boards to find the best price for your selection.
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place £5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive £55 back, £50 winnings plus your £5 stake.
Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only
All races of 5-7 runners – ¼ odds a place, 1,2
All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3
Handicaps of 12-15 runners – ¼,1,2,3
Handicaps of more than 15 runners – ¼, 1,2,3,4
So if you were to place £5 each-way (£10 in total) on a horse priced at 8-1 with a bookmaker offering ¼ odds a place, you will receive £60 if it wins, (£45 for the win and £15 for the place). If your horse places (in this instance, finishes in the first three in a handicap with less than 16 runners), you will receive £15 for the place part only.
There are many odds on offer on the racecourse and 8-1 is pretty simple - you win 8 times your stake. But some are not so straightforward. What about if your selection was 6-4? Well, it is simply a case of mathematics. Divide both sides by 4 and you are left with 1.5-1 or in other words for every £1 you bet, you will win £1.50. So for a £5 win bet you would receive £12.50, £7.50 winnings plus your £5 stake.
The final consideration should be how much you bet. You should only ever bet what you can afford to lose. One sensible approach is look how many races there are and multiply that by your usual stake. So if you usually bet £5 per race and there are seven races, £35 would be your potential loss.
You can stick rigidly to £5 per race or mix it up by having £10 in one race but then only £2.50 two others to balance your books. All that remains is to sit back and watch the race and hopefully see your selection blaze home in front.

TWO YEAR OLD TROPHY
With a guaranteed prize fund of £150,000, this afternoon’s Listed William Hill Two Year Old Trophy is one of the most valuable juvenile races in Europe and one of the highlights of our season. The race is a unique addition to the calendar in that is has been designed specifically for two-year-olds whose sires had one or more yearling sales at the main public auctions in Europe and North America during the previous year It was first run in 1989 and proved an instant success with owners and trainers
Richard Hannon Senior was well known as a leading trainer of top-class juveniles and so it was hardly surprising that the inaugural race was won by one of his string. Under a front running ride from Brian Rouse, Osario ran out the 12/1 winner Hannon was back in the Winners’ Enclosure three years later thanks to the success of Pips Pride in the hands of Dean McKeown, who also rode Captain Rio to land the race in 2001 and Dubai Dynamo in 2007.
The most recent of McKeown’s victories provided trainer Stan Moore with the first of back-to-back wins in this race as 12 months later Total Gallery landed the spoils, although this time under Liam Keniry.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Richard Hannon Junior added his name to the race’s illustrious Roll of Honour in 2015 when Log Out Island made all for a convincing success under Sean Levey. However, the prize returned to the North in 2016 as David Barron’s Wick Powell made all under jockey Andrew Mullen to give the trainer his second win in the race after Dim Sums’ victory in 2000.
And the trophy remained in Yorkshire in 2017 when the Barry McHugh-ridden Darkanna gave Richard Fahey his first success in the race A second was to follow in 2019 when Summer Sands triumphed, also in hands of Barry McHugh.
In between Summer Daydream gave the recently retired Keith Dalgleish his sole victory in this race under Connor Beasley.
Tim Easterby is currently the leading trainer in this race Who can forget the flying filly Pipalong who scorched to success in 1998 and she was followed four years later by the subsequent multiple Group 1 winner Somnus Body And Soul brought up the hat-trick when justifying favouritism for Duran Fentiman in 2012 and a fourth win swiftly followed when Ventura Mist landed the odds under David Allan in 2013.
Cape Merino landed the biggest shock in the early days when winning at 33/1 in 1993. In those early days a special bonus of £100,000 was on offer dependent upon the number of two-year-olds in the winning trainers’ yard. As Cape Merino was the only juvenile in the late Alf Smith’s Beverley stable, he copped the lot!
In 2004, the Two Year Old Trophy was elevated to Listed status and one of the best performances in the race’s history came when the Mick Channon-trained Obe Gold smashed the track record when partnered by Chris Catlin.
The prize returned to Yorkshire in 2005 when 28/1 shot Misu Bond landed the honours for Bryan Smart in the well-known black and yellow colours of Reg Bond. Those colours were also carried to victory in 2010 when the 3/1 favourite Ladies Are Forever scored for trainer Geoff Oldroyd and jockey Silvestre De Sousa. Danum Dancer was a double-figure priced winner in 2006 when obliging at odds of 16/1 for another Yorkshire handler Neville Bycroft and there was an even bigger shock 12 months later when Dubai Dynamo struck at odds of 40/1 – becoming the biggest-priced winner of the race – to give trainer Stan Moore the first of his successive wins in the race.
Another big-priced winner scored in 2009 when Lucky Like won at 20/1 for Eoghan O’Neill and jockey Franny Norton. After that, the prize remained in Yorkshire for the next four years following the victories of Ladies Are Forever in 2010, the Kevin Ryan-trained Bogart in 2011, Body And Soul in 2012 and Ventura Mist in 2013.
HISTORY OF THE
Cold Case Summer Daydream
Bogart
In 2014 we saw a top-class performance from Henry Candy’s Limato Unbeaten in three starts, the 6/5 favourite ran out an impressive winner, so it was hardly a surprise when he went on to Group race success later in his career. In all, he won 14 of 33 career starts with the pinnacle coming in 2016 when he won the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket and Prix de la Foret on Arc day at Chantilly, whilst Longchamp was under going redevelopment. When he retired at the end of the 2020 season, he had earned owner Paul Jacobs over £1.4 million in prize moneynot a bad return for a £41,000 purchase!
After a couple of years in the south the trophy returned to Yorkshire in 2022 when Cold Case proved far too good for his rivals for Leyburntrainer Karl Burke and rider Clifford Lee
The high-class action is not just limited to the feature race today as the card is supported by the £47,000 Listed Racing TV EBF Stallions Guisborough Stakes, ran over the specialist distance of seven furlongs
Saeed Bin Suroor has won the race three times for Godolphin – Gonfilia in 2004, Council Member in 2005 and Il Warrd in 2008 while Charlie Appleby made it another win for the Godolphin blue in 2016 as Latharnach took the spoils Mark Johnston, who has since handed over the reins to son Charlie, was successful three times thanks to Muteela in 2014, Main Edition in 2019 and I’m A Gambler last year
It is a race which tends to attract runners from many of the big yards which the likes of William Haggas, Richard Fahey, Roger Varian, Brian Ellison, Ed Dunlop, Charles Hills, Richard Hannon, Simon & Ed Crisford and David O’Meara all appearing on the recent roll of honour
Limato
In more recent times, Ralph Beckett added his name to the role of honour when Lullaby Moon defied favouritism under Rossa Ryan in 2020. And there was another new name 12 months later when the Royal Ascot winning Chipotle won out in a tight finish for Eve Johnson Houghton and jockey Charles Bishop.
This afternoon also sees the running of the £45,000 SDDE Smith Group Straight-Mile Series Final, for which Redcar has been holding qualifiers all season. It has a history of unearthing some useful horses and has been won in the past by Jubilee Street, Nanton, Fragrancy, Charlie Tipple, Collateral Damage and Kiwi Bay, the latter winning back-to-back renewals in 2010 and 2011. Last year saw victory for the Harry Eustace-trained Belhaven with Hayley Turner in the saddle
So sit back and enjoy the action on the track today as, judged on previous years, you are likely to witness some top-class racing and who knows, maybe a future superstar in the making.

The William Hill Two Year Old Trophy was first run in 1989 and was won by the Richard Hannon Senior trained Osario. The 12/1 shot was ridden by Brian Rouse who beat a number of other well know jockeys such as Steve Cauthen, Pat Eddery, Willie Carson and Walter Swinburn to name but a few.
LEADING JOCKEY
Silvestre De Sousa and Barry McHugh are the only current riders to have won the race more that once - Danun Dancer in 2006 and Ladies Are Forever in 2010 for the former, while McHugh won on Darkanna in 2017 and Summer Sands in 2019. The now retired Dean McKeown won the race in 2001 on Captain Rio and 2007 on Dubai Dynamo.
LEADING TRAINER
Tim Easterby leads the way with four wins. The Great Habton-trainer’s first success came in 1998 with the classy mare Pipalong before Somnus followed suit in 2002. Body And Soul and Ventura Mist gave him back-to-back victories in 2012/13.
RECORD TIME
A spell of dry weather saw Good to Firm ground for the 2004 renewal. Under an enterprising ride by jockey Chris Catlin, the Mick Channon-trained Obe Gold made virtually all of the six furlong contest in a record time for the race of 1m 8.84s.

MQSE DE SEVIGNE and Inspiral are very closely matched on Timeform ratings so the former looks the value call for a yard that won this in 2015 with Esoterique. Heredia did well to win the Atlanta Stakes at Sandown 5 weeks ago and is best of the others.
RACECOURSE CHAPLAINCY
Asmall team of chaplains are present to serve people of all faiths and none, offering their support to individuals in each sector of the racecourse. From the start of the day until after the end of racing, they walk the course and are ready to respond to those needing ‘a listening ear’. Please say “hello” to them.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW
VOLTERRA was just behind Zain Blue, who had the benefit of previous experience, when a promising fourth on debut in a valuable York maiden in August. Kevin Ryan’s charge failed to build on that at Ayr next time but again shaped well nonetheless and is taken to make it third time lucky. Zain Blue should again be in the thick of things and rates the clear main danger ahead of Gressington, who has more on his plate than when making a winning debut at Southwell but he’s clearly talented.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW
RAMAZAN has developed into a smart handicapper this year and looks ready for this step up in class judged on his near miss in the Ayr Gold Cup a fortnight ago He is marginally preferred to Johan, who pulled a rabbit out of the hat when landing the ultracompetitive Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood on his belated reappearance and dropping back to 7f is unlikely to be an issue Awaal failed to fire in the Golden Mile but will be a threat if back to his best, while Vafortino also merits respect.

Surely a horse is a horse, right? Four legs with a head at one end and a tail at the other Strictly speaking that’s true, but in horse racing there are many different terms used to describe the horse.
Names
Yearling - a horse of either sex aged one-year-old Colt - a male horse aged two, three or four-years-old Filly - a female horse aged two, three or four-years-old Horse - a male horse aged five-years-old or above
Mare - a female horse aged five-years-old or above
Gelding - a castrated male horse of any age
Did you know?
Regardless of their actual date of birth (or foaling to use a racing term), all thoroughbred racehorses in the Northern hemisphere share the same birthday - 1st January. This avoids any element of doubt when it comes to entering a horse for an age specific race. In the Southern hemisphere all horses share 1st August due to the fact that the seasons are reversed.
Colours
There are five main colours of thoroughbred racehorses, most of which you will likely see on the racecard today. These are made up of two base colours, black and chestnut.
Brown - Usually a very dark brown colour and reasonably common.
Bay - Bay is the most common colouring and can vary from light brown to dark brown. Without getting too technical, a bay is a genetic modification of a black base colour, and therefore the legs, mane and tail are black.
Chestnut - Chestnuts range in colour from a light golden colour to a rich red and on a hot summers day, they can really stand out in the Parade Ring.
Grey - Greys can vary from a dark grey to almost white. Grey horses possess a gene that modifies their original coat colour It is a process similar to the greying of human hair and can happen at any age.
Roan - A roan is very similar to a grey and the inexperienced may not be able to tell the difference. They have a slightly modified gene in that the greying only affects the body and their legs, mane and tail tend to retain their original colouring. Other colours such as black, cream and white are extremely rare and not often seen on the racecourse.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW
An open-looking series final but marginal preference is for HORTZADAR, who took advantage of a much-reduced mark last month and can quickly regain the winning thread with Richard Kingscote on board for the first time Provided he copes with the quick turnaround, he can get the better of Young Fire, who has enjoyed a fruitful campaign and has dropped back down to his last winning mark. Clear Angel, La Trinidad and Ron O are just a trio of others to consider

DISTANCES EXPLAINED
Races on the flat are run over a range of different distances. The shortest distance is 5 furlongs which is often referred to as ‘the minimum trip’. Races usually go up in 1 furlong increments although it can be parts of a furlong depending on the configuration of each racecourse. For example, races classed as being run over 6 furlongs at Redcar are actually run over 5 furlongs and 217 yards - 3 yards short of the official distance but this isn’t unique on British racecourses.
You may be fooled into thinking that the 2 miles and 4 furlongs Gold Cup at Royal Ascot is the longest race on the flat in Britain but it is in fact another Royal Ascot race that holds the record. The Queen Alexandra Stakes is run over a stamina-sapping distance of 2 miles and 6 furlongs. Horse racing in Britain dates back hundreds of years so it is hardly surprising that we still use a few historic terms when it comes to the sport. But what exactly is a furlong?
In simple terms, a furlong equates to 220 yards or just over 200 metres. C O M M O N RAC E DI STA N C E S 5 furlongs =
