Star Ratings Explained - Each horse has a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating - The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed.

Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

HOW TO UNDERSTAND BETTING & FORM

Having a flutter is part of the fun of a day at the races.

P I C K YO U R W I NN ER

Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours whilst others go to the Parade Ring and pick their favourite looking horses. Alternatively, you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

W H E R E TO P L AC EYO U R BE T

You can place a bet in the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookies’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. Alternatively, you can place a bet at one of the many totepool betting points all around the racecourse or at the totesport betting shop on the ground floor of the Petch Stand, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

P L AC E YO U R BE T!

Decide how much you want to stake and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race has started. Keep your bet receipt safe as you will need this to collect your winnings. Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a Stewards’ enquiry’.

Surely a horse is a horse, right? Four legs with a head at one end and a tail at the other Strictly speaking that’s true, but in horse racing there are many different terms used to describe the horse.

Names

Yearling - a horse of either sex aged one-year-old Colt - a male horse aged two, three or four-years-old Filly - a female horse aged two, three or four-years-old Horse - a male horse aged five-years-old or above

Mare - a female horse aged five-years-old or above

Gelding - a castrated male horse of any age

Did you know?

Regardless of their actual date of birth (or foaling to use a racing term), all thoroughbred racehorses in the Northern hemisphere share the same birthday - 1st January. This avoids any element of doubt when it comes to entering a horse for an age specific race. In the Southern hemisphere all horses share 1st August due to the fact that the seasons are reversed.

Colours

There are five main colours of thoroughbred racehorses, most of which you will likely see on the racecard today. These are made up of two base colours, black and chestnut.

Brown - Usually a very dark brown colour and reasonably common.

Bay - Bay is the most common colouring and can vary from light brown to dark brown. Without getting too technical, a bay is a genetic modification of a black base colour, and therefore the legs, mane and tail are black.

Chestnut - Chestnuts range in colour from a light golden colour to a rich red and on a hot summers day, they can really stand out in the Parade Ring.

Grey - Greys can vary from a dark grey to almost white. Grey horses possess a gene that modifies their original coat colour It is a process similar to the greying of human hair and can happen at any age.

Roan - A roan is very similar to a grey and the inexperienced may not be able to tell the difference. They have a slightly modified gene in that the greying only affects the body and their legs, mane and tail tend to retain their original colouring. Other colours such as black, cream and white are extremely rare and not often seen on the racecourse.

Welooksettobetreatedtoafantastic afternoonatRedcar, andwearereally looking forward to sponsoring three greatracesacrossthecard.

The opening race on the card is the Weatherbys Stallion Book Nursery Handicap over 6f and the weights are headed by MissWooWoo Robert Cowell’s filly appreciated the step up to this trip at Brighton last time, making all under Luke Morris to shed her maiden tag. Morris retains the ride and will likely be on the front end again on handicap debut. She won’t have it all her own way out in front though, and similar tactics will likely beemployedbyFrannyNortonaboard Carabella.Thedropdownto6fisn’tan obvious move based on the pedigree of Charlie Johnston’s filly, but it would be ofnosurprise if Nortontried toturn thisintoastaminatest.

Gemma Tutty landed the spoils as a jockey here in 2021 and now returns as the trainer of Strawman.

Tim Easterby landed the prize here in 2021, and sends Carnaby Princess in search of success here. The filly gets in right at the bottom of the weights and will appreciate this step back up in trip, dropped 3lbs for a run over the minimum trip last time. Michael Dods’ Mecca’s Duchess is one of the more interesting runners in the field and is

Wichahpi was a shock winner at 80/1 when last seen, benefitting from the application of first-time cheekpieces to make all at Thirsk. Later in the day, we also sponsor the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap, a Class 4 event over 1m2f. Gemma Tutty landed the spoils as a jockey here in 2021 and now returns as the trainer of Strawman in search of another victory in the contest. at Chester, but has now dropped to 3lbs below his last winning mark. The latter, trained by Charlie Johnston, was a course and distance winner herelasttermandfinishedfourthover course and distance in a strong Class 2 Handicap here back in May. The five-year-old finished a respectable fourthatBeverleywhenlastseenwhen perhaps just outpaced over a shorter distance, and will appreciate this step backupintrip.

Casilli was unsuited by the drop in trip last time, but is three times a winner at today’s distance and has solid claims from a slidingmark.

The third and final event on the day that we are proud to be sponsoring is the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap over the minimum trip of 5f. Roger Fell and Sean Murray have won two of the last three renewals and their 2022 winner, Lotus Rose, returns in a bid to record consecutive victories in the contest. The Showcasing filly was mightily impressive in winning this race last year, and arrives here on thebackofagoodthirdatDoncaster. Fellow three-year-old Castan was twice a winner as a juvenile last term but is yet to get his head in front this year. An agonisingly close second on his penultimate start at Musselburgh offers plenty of encouragement for connections though and four of the last five winners of this contest have beenthree-year-olds.

Tim Easterby’s Albegone has been in flying form of late, with two wins and a second from his last four starts, and willlooktocontinuethathere.Thefiveyear-old was denied by just a head in this contest back in 2021 and bids to go one better under the same jockey, DavidAllan.

WEATHERBYSRACEDAYPREVIEW
Stone Of Destiny

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

Blinkers

The hustle and bustle of a racecourse can be exciting for a racehorse and so Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

Visors

Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup. If you look at the two pictures in the examples you can just make out the difference. This slit enables a horse to see the other runners around them but still keeps the focus forwards.

Cheekpieces

Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. Horses who struggle to perform to their best because they are too keen in their races are often prime candidates for cheekpieces.

Eye Shields

Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. Often worn at all-weather tracks where the kick-back can fly into the horses faces, the purpose of them is to prevent anything going into the horses eyes.

Hood

Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. Padding around the ears restricts noise and helps to calm a nervous horse. Eye holes allow a full range of vision.

Noseband

Some horses can carry their head awkwardly high which prevents them performing at their best. A noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

Tongue Strap

Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping out. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race. You can just see it in the picture.

iDISTANCES EXPLAINED

Races on the flat are run over a range of different distances. The shortest distance is 5 furlongs which is often referred to as ‘the minimum trip’. Races usually go up in 1 furlong increments although it can be parts of a furlong depending on the configuration of each racecourse. For example, races classed as being run over 6 furlongs at Redcar are actually run over 5 furlongs and 217 yards - 3 yards short of the official distance but this isn’t unique on British racecourses.

You may be fooled into thinking that the 2 miles and 4 furlongs Gold Cup at Royal Ascot is the longest race on the flat in Britain but it is in fact another Royal Ascot race that holds the record. The Queen Alexandra Stakes is run over a stamina-sapping distance of 2 miles and 6 furlongs. Horse racing in Britain dates back hundreds of years so it is hardly surprising that we still use a few historic terms when it comes to the sport. But what exactly is a furlong?

In simple terms, a furlong equates to 220 yards or just over 200 metres.

Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and this year will reach around 16,000 young people – at UK racecourses, trainers’yards and studs.

They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving.

The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives. Please scan this QR code to donate, if you can.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap?

In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated?

Once a horse has run at least three times in a Flat race, or run in no more than two Flat races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown.

In subsequent races if a horse runs better than its rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below its rating then it will be reduced.

Ratings start from around 30 at the lower end of the scale with the average top level horses rated roughly between 115 and 125. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes.

Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 71 & 85. So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in.

In this instance a horse rated 85 is 5 higher than a horse rated 80 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race. In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW

STONE OF DESTINY has burned many a finger over the years but Michael Appleby’s mercurial 8-y-o came agonisingly close to ending his 3-year losing streak at Doncaster last time and has to be worth chancing again in this kind of company. Albegone has proved resurgent of late and has competed well from higher marks in the past so can pose the biggest threat, with Lotus Rose also respected if able to build on her latest effort.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW

KALGANOV has slipped a long way in the weights since joining David O’Meara’s yard from France and he can go one better than when only narrowly denied by a well-ridden rival at Ayr last week. Kodebreaker appears to be gradually working his way back to form and can also get into the mix, with Homer Stokes, Asmund and Biplane others for the shortlist despite varyingly high draws
