Star Ratings Explained Each horse has a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published
the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed.
subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Having a flutter is part of the fun of a day at the races.
Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours whilst others go to the Parade Ring and pick their favourite looking horses. Alternatively, you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
You can place a bet in the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookies’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. Alternatively, you can place a bet at one of the many totepool betting points all around the racecourse or at the totesport betting shop on the ground floor of the Petch Stand, which is identical to a high street betting shop.
Decide how much you want to stake and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race has started. Keep your bet receipt safe as you will need this to collect your winnings. Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a Stewards’ enquiry’.

Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and this year will reach around 16,000 young people at UK racecourses, trainers’yards and studs.
They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving.
The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives. Please scan this QR code to donate, if you can.

One of Britain’s greatest stayers on the flat in modern times, DOUBLE TRIGGER trained at Middleham by Mark Johnston won 14 of his 29 races, earning in excess of £500,000.
12 of Double Trigger’s victories were in Group races including the Ascot Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup three times. He also became the first horse in over 150 years to win the Doncaster Cup three times and this achievement was recognised when a locomotive was named after DOUBLE TRIGGER by Great North Eastern Railway, previous sponsors of the Doncaster Cup. A life-size statue of DOUBLE TRIGGER stands in the Paddock at Doncaster Racecourse.
He was purchased for IR£7,200 at the 1992 Irish National Yearling Sale and it was at Redcar on 25th September 1993 that DOUBLE TRIGGER won on his racecourse debut as a juvenile. Today’s race at 2.30pm, The European Breeders’ Fund EBF Double Trigger Novice Stakes is the very same race in which DOUBLE TRIGGER launched his outstanding career when winning by 10 lengths and, in the process, setting a new 2-year-old track record for the 1 mile 1 furlong race distance.
Following his retirement from the track DOUBLE TRIGGER went on to become a successful dual-purpose stallion standing at Clarendon Farm in Wiltshire.
DOUBLE TRIGGER was immensely popular with a huge public following and Redcar Racecourse is delighted that his owner , Ron Huggins, is here today to present the Double Trigger Trophy, a perpetual trophy that is presented each year to commemorate the wonderful achievements of this fine racehorse.
