Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and this year will reach around 16,000 young people at UK racecourses, trainers’yards and studs.
They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving.

The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives. Please scan this QR code to donate, if you can.

Sam Hall (1916-1977)
In today’s modern parlance of hype and superlative the word legendary is frequently over used but we would make no apology in applying that description to the great Sam Hall. His obituary in the Sporting Life began: ‘Sam Hall was the very epitome of a popular trainer, a genial, good-humoured, often out-spoken Yorkshireman with a natural inborn judgement and understanding of horses.’

His obituary in the Sporting Life began: ‘Sam Hall was the very epitome of a popular trainer, a genial, good-humoured, often out-spoken Yorkshireman with a natural inborn judgement and understanding of horses.’

Indeed his record speaks for itself. Multiple wins at Royal Ascot, two Ebors, the Ayr Gold Cup, the St Simon Stakes, the Dewhurst, the Cesarewitch, the November Handicap (five times no less), two Lincolns and the list goes on. Sam also had a tremendous record at Redcar four Zetland Gold Cups, three Andy Capps (in successive years), the Vaux Gold Tankard and the William Hill Gold Cup.

Sam was the youngest of three brothers who all went on to be hugely successful trainers. In fact Charlie, the middle son, had few peers over the jumps and is annually commemorated with the running of the eponymous ‘chase at Wetherby in October Sam started out assisting both Charlie and elder brother Tom before taking out his own licence in 1949 originally based at Brecongill in Middleham. In 1967 he moved to Spigot Lodge at Leyburn with the Brecongill stable remaining in the family when Sally Hall, daughter of Tom became, at 29, the first licensed woman trainer in the North.

Sam trained well over one thousand winners and there was never a trainer more adept at preparing a horse for a big handicap. His impact though was far greater than even the incredible statistics. He touched and greatly improved the lives and careers of many individuals who in turn went on to achieve at the highest level.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW

ZARABANDA wasn’t far behind a couple of previous winners when an excellent third starting out at Newcastle a fortnight ago and expected to build on that, she will take some stopping. Prakasa still looked rough around the edges when successful at Kempton and she’s a big threat, while Kingsofthemidlands will be a factor if reacting positively to blinkers (which is far from guaranteed).

Though largely below par so far this year, MENIN GATE landed this race off an 11lb higher mark in 2020 and it could be that returning to this track could spark a return to form. He is marginally preferred to She’s Got Bottle, who was foiled in her hat-trick bid at Newcastle recently but performed well enough to suggest that she’ll be in the thick of things here Hot Team and Bearwith are others to consider
