On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to Day 2 of the 2025 Punchestown Festival, Ladbrokes Gold Cup Day.
The Punchestown Festival is a massive event that ignites local pride and captures national attention. A celebration over 5 days for the culmination of the jumps season boasting 12 Grade 1 races and over €3.5 million in prizemoney drawing champions, dreamers, and crowds from far and wide With a reputation which brings both responsibility and pressure to deliver perfect jumping ground It is Ireland’s largest corporate hospitality event, where top class racing meets the glamour of fashion, the joy of entertainment, and creates special moments and memories that last a lifetime But beyond the numbers, the prestige, and the spectacle - Punchestown is more than that, Punchestown is special, Punchestown is tradition.
As we embark on a major milestone in our history, the 175th anniversary of Punchestown, our focus in 2025 has been to instil that tradition so that the business continues to evolve and grow so that we safeguard Punchestown for the generations to come. This would simply not be possible without the support of each and every one of you here today and the integral part you play in the tradition of Punchestown and for that I want to say Thank You.

The eagerly anticipated renewal of the Grade 1 €300,000 Ladbrokes Gold Cup takes centre stage as the feature race on day two. I would particularly like to welcome all the team from Ladbrokes who are long standing supporters of Punchestown and indeed all our partners today and indeed throughout the week for your invaluable support. Without their involvement it wouldn’t be possible for us to attract and showcase the very best jump racing stars on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season.
J.P. McManus is well renowned as being one of the greatest supporters of National Hunt racing, not only as a prominent owner, but also as the sponsor of the Adare Manor Opportunity Series, the final of which takes place today. This fantastic initiative provides young jockeys in the early stages of their career with a huge opportunity to gain experience and showcase their talent on the racecourse. This is only one of the many ways both J.P. and Noreen support the racing industry for which we are extremely grateful and I’ve no doubt that we are looking at some of the potential future stars of the weighroom in action.
The Punchestown Festival really is something to savour, we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and hopefully you get a few winners as well!
I look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow for more exhilarating action with the Ladbrokes Stayers Hurdle the feature highlight on Day 3 with the first race going to post at 2.30pm.
Kindest Regards
Conor O’Neill CEO, Punchestown

Recent impressive Tramore winner FAIRYLAND OPERA could prove leniently treated off 114 Despite easily opening her account over hurdles, the Lorna Fowler-trained mare was left on the same mark for that maiden success. Back in handicap company, the six-year-old can exploit that favourable rating. Runner-up on her previous start at Navan, the daughter of Elusive Pimpernel has plenty of experience. A fast-run race, where she can be delivered late from off the pace, should really suit. Thanksforthehelp was third in this race a few years back when sent off market leader Representing the sponsors, he is sure to have had a repeat bid in mind for some time Ballysax Hank also catches the eye off a lower hurdles mark. Legendary Limerick trainer Michael Hourigan is receiving a presentation this afternoon from the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee in recognition of his stellar career spanning 52 years as a licensed National Hunt Trainer. First licensed in 1973, Michael trained his first winner when Ramrajya won the Holiday Handicap Hurdle under Jack Cullen at Limerick on St Patricks day, 1979.
Michael trained almost 1,000 winners over jumps, on the flat and between the flags including Deep Bramble, Tropical Lake, Hi Cloy and Church Island and will be forever known for his skillful handling of both Dorans Pride and Beef or Salmon who won over 50 races between them including 16 Grade 1s.
Here at Punchestown, Michael won the John Durkan with Dorans Pride in 1997 and Hi Cloy in 2005 while Beef Or Salmon recorded double Grade 1’s in the 2003/04 Season, winning the John Durkan in December before running out an impressive winner of the Punchestown Gold Cup at the National Hunt Festival in April.
INHSC Chairperson Jill Farrell will make the presentation along with fellow Directors Dr Tom McDonogh, Robert Steele, Victor Connolly, Nicholas Lambert & Richard Rohan.

The Willie Mullins-trained KAID D’AUTHIE is given a chance to atone for a lacklustre effort at Cheltenham. Previously a respectable fourth in Grade 1 company at the Dublin Racing Festival, the French-bred gelding had won his maiden hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Having skipped Aintree, the five-year-old should be a relatively fresh horse coming into this contest and his prominent racing style will prove well suited to this sharp track. Stablemate Got Glory has failed to complete in three starts this campaign, but she was runner-up at this meeting last year and perhaps a return to Punchestown will see her show more of her old sparkle Blue Mosque needs to step up, but she is an experienced hurdler who shouldn’t be ruled out.

The Gordon Elliott-trained HONESTY POLICY is taken to follow up his Grade 1 win at Aintree A winner of three of his four career runs over flights, the five-year-old was bought by JP McManus prior to that recent success. With the speed to win over the minimum trip and the stamina to finish runner-up in a point-to-point, he looks to have it all While this is arguably his stiffest test to date, the son of Jukebox Jury should be up to the task. Cheltenham winner Jasmin De Vaux hadn’t convinced with his jumping prior to that commanding success. Provided he puts in an error-free round again, he has to go close Unbeaten hurdler Jarrive De Mee also merits respect.

BAMBINO FEVER bids to follow up recent heroics and holds three of today’s rivals on previous form. A point-to-point winner, her bumper form is top-class and after beating Switch From Diesel at the Dublin Racing Festival, she raced wide when scoring at Cheltenham. She is ground-versatile, consistent and can confirm her Cheltenham superiority over stablemate Copacabana (10th) and Kalypso’chance (11th, having started favourite) Patrick Mullins again rides Copacabana but although he defeated two subsequent winners on debut and also raced wide at Cheltenham, he has 10 lengths to find with the selection. The keen-going Colcannon defeated the subsequent Cheltenham seventh- and eighth-placed horses at Leopardstown and is capable of getting involved. WIN: BAMBINO FEVER EACH-WAY: COPACABANA

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.
CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.
EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.
HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.
NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all horses.
In total five veterinarians are in attendance each day of the Festival.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
The horses’ welfare is our priority
The Association Of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)
GRADE 1
One of three Grade 1 races run on the second day of the Festival, the Gold Cup is the only Grade 1 Steeplechase on today’s card. First run in its current format in 1999, the first two renewals went to the legendary Ruby Walsh, who bowed out as a fan-favourite aboard Kemboy in 2019 Willie Mullins has seen a lot of recent success in this race, landing five of the past 10 renewals despite seeing Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Al Boum Photo and Galopin des Champs defeated
€300,000
4 of the past 10 winners had won at Aintree
18 of the past 20 winners were aged 7-9
13 of the past 19 winners were second-season chasers
It was as though history repeated itself as the odds-on shot Galopin des Champs was denied by Fastorslow for the second year running. Fastorslow and his rider obtained thorough redemption for a Cheltenham Gold Cup mishap, repeating last year’s success and underlining his liking for this track. He responded well to a positive ride to reverse Irish Gold Cup form quite comprehensively under J J Slevin, who was always keen to keep the eightyear-old handy. He pulled away from Galopin Des Champs by just over a length, while Hewick stayed on strongest of the rest to pick up third spot.
A competitive field of four head to post for the 2025 renewal of the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup Galopin Des Champs will be bidding to gain redemption after losing out on his hat-trick in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, still finishing ahead of the re-opposing Monty’s Star The star stayer will prove almighty popular again. Runner-up in the John Durkan earlier in the season, Spillane’s Tower comes into this fresh after being taken out of the Mildmay at Aintree due to the ground. With a bit of cut in the grass, he could prove a big player. King George VI winner Banbridge can’t be overlooked in here either, scoring at last year’s Festival in the William Hill Champion Chase PRIZE MONEY

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS has finished second in the last two renewals of this race and while he hasn’t displayed his best form at Punchestown, he continues to produce consistently high-class performances and finished second in last month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup Beaten four times from six course runs, he nonetheless performed with great credit in each of those defeats and while beaten by Spillane’s Tower in November, is better suited by this longer distance. Spillane’s Tower disappointed in the King George over Christmas and although he remains unexposed and is a fresher horse, he might struggle against chasing’s ‘Mr Dependable’. Banbridge won the King George but, along with Monty’s Star, is held by the selection on Cheltenham form. WIN: GALOPIN DES CHAMPS EACH-WAY: SPILLANE’S TOWER

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only
All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2
All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3
Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3
Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

Placed twice at Grade 1 level from three course runs, he fell when fancied for last year’s race He has run well in the last two renewals of Aintree’s Topham Chase, drops slightly in grade here, and should compete Lets Go Champ is 8lb higher than when winning this last year, while runner-up Must Be Obeyed is much better off at the weights and has a useful course record but was well beaten just eight days ago
Lightkeeper steps up in grade, while Blue Lord tries cheekpieces.

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.
For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.
The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!
A dozen go to post for the concluding contest on day two–theWeatherbysGeneral Stud Book Irish EBF Mares INH FlatRace–andwithChampion Bumper winner Bambino Fever takingherchanceintheGrade 1 earlier on the card, Aintree winner Seo Linn sets the standard.
Paddy Twomey’s daughter of Order Of St George was returningfroma138-daybreak – having won a Listed race at Cheltenham in November –and showed plenty of pace when winning the Grade 2 Nickel Coin at the Grand National meeting. The drying groundwillverymuchbeinher favour and she is expected to be switched to the Flat in the comingweeks/months.
Aintree winner Seo Linn sets the standard.
Willie Mullins has won four of the eight renewals of this race and he relies on Future Prospect, who looked exciting when winning at Fairyhouse in mid-December, before finishing only fifth when sent off favourite to win the Grade 2 at the Dublin Racing Festival, a race which was won by her aforementioned stable-mate BambinoFever.

Carrigmoornaspruce’s Christmas victory over recent 12-length winner Sortudo (Switch From Diesel was back in 3rd that day, incidentally) reads well and under the prevailing conditions, she has tobegivenplentyofrespect.
Amen Kate had beaten her impressively on debut at Limerick last September, then split Carrigmoornaspruce and Future Prospect when fourth in the DRF Grade 2. That pairing reversedtheformatFairyhouse recently and whilst it could be that Thomas Cooper’s mare prefers slightly softer ground, it is worth noting that her dam Augusta Kate won this race backin2016.

CARRIGMOORNASPRUCE is very dependable and has run well in some smart bumpers. A dual winner, she was beaten 13 lengths by subsequent Cheltenham Champion Bumper winner Bambino Fever in February and again ran well in a recent Listed bumper - where the smart Switch From Diesel turned previous form around to beat her Future Prospect disappointed in that February race but was just a nose behind the selection 24 days ago, so little separates the pair The well-bred Seo Linn is a half-sister to an Italian Derby runner-up and has scored at Listed and Grade 2 level in England this season. Beaten into fourth in a Gowran Listed bumper in October, she reverts to tackling some of the better Irish-based mares here.
