DID YOU
KNOW?
P
unchestown was solely a cross-country course until 1961,
when the new bush course was introduced, allowing
hurdle and chase races to take place for the first time.
P
unchestown’s first commercial sponsorship arrived in 1960 with the John Jameson Perpetual Challenge Cup.
In later years, Guinness and Martin Mahony joined the roster of major supporters.
I
n 1861, Punchestown became the first National Hunt
racecourse in Ireland to build a permanent grandstand,
marking a major step forward in racecourse facilities.
I
stabraq won the inaugural Shell Champion Hurdle in 1999, and the roll of honour has since grown to include modern
greats such as Moscow Flyer, Hardy Eustace, Hurricane Fly
and State Man.
P
unchestown has 170 acres of racing ground, meticulously maintained all year round. To put that into perspective,
the track covers the equivalent of 89 Croke Park pitches, 95 Aviva Stadium pitches, or 766 Wimbledon Centre Courts, a
huge area to keep in peak condition!
I
n 1976, Ted Walsh won the Punchestown Gold Cup aboard
No Hill for his father, Ruby Walsh Sr. History repeated
itself in 2000, when Ruby Walsh rode Commanche Court
to Punchestown Gold Cup success for his father, Ted. It is a remarkable family legacy at Punchestown.
I
n 1923, 72-year-old Harry Beasley rode Pride of Arms to victory at Punchestown, becoming the oldest jockey to win
a race in Ireland, a remarkable record that still stands today!

RACE SUMMARY BALLYGUNNER CASTLE was a useful novice hurdler and finished second to a promising type on his chase debut here earlier in the month. A lot of Willie Mullins’ runners have been coming on for their their first run of the campaign and the Soldier Of Fortune gelding is likely to be hard to beat. Slade Steel won last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and has been runner-up on all three starts over fences. He was beaten by a Mullins-trained rival on his reappearance at Navan and steps up to 3m for the first time since winning a point-to-point. Argento Boy, another Mullins inmate, fell when favourite for the race in which the selection was second here and has to be respected.

RACE SUMMARY A course winner over hurdles, SAMMY SMART was a fine second on his handicap chase debut at Thurles last month. The winner followed up on his next outing and is now rated 30lb higher than when the selection came up against him. Trainer Tom Gibney has had a couple of horses run well in recent days and the Kalanisi gelding looks set to go close under his capable 5lb claimer. Crecora Hills had Three In A Row back in fourth when a well-backed winner at Naas and may be progressive enough to confirm that form despite a 12lb swing in the weights. Casey West bounced back to form when second at Fairyhouse and has to enter calculations as well.

PRIEST HILL & FR SEÁN BREEN Overlooking the Punchestown course lies a gentle rise known as Priest’s Hill. Serving nearby parishes in Eadestown and Ballymore Eustace, he was never far from the track. Parishioners remember him pausing midsermon to tip a horse at Punchestown, delivering it with the same warmth, charm, and humour that made him so beloved. In

RACE SUMMARY SARATOGA is a fascinating jumping debutant for Padraig Roche. The son of Camelot was decent on the Flat for Aidan O’Brien and, given that he won a handicap over an extended 1m6f on testing ground at Listowel, he could have plenty to offer in this discipline. Mino Des Mottes looks an obvious contender on Irish debut for Willie Mullins. He was a handy winner on the Flat in July in his native France and is sure to be well schooled for his jumping debut. He looks the sort of recruit the champion trainer does so well with. Wackestone has improved on each of his three runs over hurdles and is likely to be in the thick of the action.

First Offic Meeting
Punchestown’s racing story began in 1824, when the venue first hosted the Kildare Hunt Races, which have grown into what we know today as The Punchestown Festival. It wasn’t until Monday, April 1st, 1850, that Punchestown Racecourse was officially established under the organisation of the Kildare Hunt Club.

Expansion to Two Days The Great Southern and Western Railway donated £20 to make the expansion possible a clear sign of the growing number of racegoers travelling by train to Punchestown. A small wooden grandstand was added to accommodate these visitors and offer an elevated view of the action. Although ‘primitive as ever’ change was on the horizon.
1854
1861
The First Grandstand With the vision and support of Lord Drogheda, permanent grandstands and enclosures were constructed for the first time. Punchestown was the first jump track in Ireland with a ‘grandstand’ emphasising the importance of spectator experience.
1901
The La Touche Family Trust The La Touche Family hold one of the most significant and enduring connections to Punchestown having gifted, in trust, the racecourse and surrounding lands for ‘the pursuit of equestrian excellence’ and the establishment of the Kildare and National Hunt Steeplechases. Originally of Huguenot descent, the La Touche family settled in Ireland in the 17th century they established Ireland’s first private bank and later played a formative role in the creation of the Bank of Ireland,
Their vision secured the racecourse’s future, and their contribution is honoured each year through the La Touche Cup, the famous cross-country steeplechase run over the historic Punchestown banks course.
1868
The Royal Visit
In 1868, record crowds of more than 150,000 gathered as The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and Princess Alexandra attended the Punchestown Races, a remarkable endorsement of the venue’s growing prestige. The occasion was hailed by journalists as “a most successful meeting”, cementing Punchestown’s reputation and inspiring royal returns in 1885 and 1904.

The Irish War Of Independence & Punchestown The Irish War of Independence and strikes by railway workers forced the Kildare Hunt Committee to cancel the 1919 and 1920 Punchestown meetings. Racing returned in 1923, under the newly established Irish Free State, giving the meeting a historic new significance. The event welcomed Governor General T.M. Healy and President W.T. Cosgrave, marking the first Punchestown held in a “truly Irish atmosphere.” For the first time, the Tricolour was raised at a race day, reflecting the country’s new identity. Governor General Healy placed his first-ever bet on Pride of Arras, ridden by 72-year-old Grand National-winning jockey Harry Beasley, who went on to win, becoming the oldest jockey to win a race in Ireland. A star of the Punchestown Conygham course, Beasley had also triumphed in front of the Prince of Wales in 1885.
The Mullins Family Legacy Begins The name Mullins is synonymous with national hunt racing and Punchestown. Paddy Mullins rode and trained his first Punchestown winner, Flash Parade II, in the La Touche Cup in 1953. His sons Willie, Tom, Tony and grandsons Patrick, Emmet, David and Danny have all followed in his footsteps, both riding and/or training winners at the track. Willie Mullins has been crowned Irish Champion Trainer 19 times at the Punchestown Festival. He is history making and record breaking with wins around the globe.
1953
1961
Progress and Commercialisatio Up until 1961, Punchestown had been solely a cross-country course. Whilst initially opposed by the traditionalists the introduction of the “bush course” elevated the calibre of horse and attracted the best of steeplechase and hurdle talent from throughout Ireland and the United Kingdom This period also saw the first commercial sponsorship in 1960, with the John Jameson Perpetual Challenge Cup, followed by Guinness and Martin Mahony. By 1963, the meeting expanded to three days, bringing Punchestown one step closer to the modern Festival we know today.

Dawn Run vs. Buck House: Held on 23 April 1986 and known simply as “The Match” this historic race featured two of Ireland’s most celebrated horses: Dawn Run and Buck House. Dawn Run, a bay mare trained by Paddy Mullins and owned by Charmian Hill, had already made history as the only horse to win both the Champion Hurdle (1984) and the Cheltenham Gold Cup (1986). Buck House, a gelding trained by Mouse Morris and ridden by Tommy Carmody, was the reigning Champion Chase winner and one of Ireland’s top two-mile chasers. The race was organised by the legendary Vincent O’Brien. Dawn Run won by two and a half lengths.
1995
King Of The Bank Risk Of Thunder Few horses have ever captured the spirit of Punchestown quite like Risk of Thunder, the undisputed master of the La Touche Cup and the banks course. Trained by Enda Bolger and owned by legendary actor Sir Sean Connery and J.P. McManus, Risk of Thunder became synonymous with the legendary Punchestown cross-country course claiming seven La Touche cup victories between 1995 and 2002’. To this day, the Risk of Thunder Cross Country Chase, run each November at Punchestown, honours his name and the thrilling era he inspired.
1998
Time Of Growth In 1998 the new €8.7 million complex opened. With the new facilities came expansion to a four-day festival in 1999 (it became five days in 2008). 1999 saw the mighty Istabraq win the newly introduced Shell Champion Hurdle.

Sprinter Sacre Uk involvement is paramount at Punchestown and has been a feature since the 1960s with trainers like Fred Rimmell, David Nicholson, Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls carrying the flag for the visitors. 2013 was a stand out year with Henderson saying “Sprinter Sacre at Punchestown was really something special”. A record 65 UK horses ran at the 2025 festival.

Modern Day Festival Now a five-day spectacular, the Punchestown Festival stands as a true celebration of Irish racing and culture with over 120,000 people, 19,000 hospitality guests, 58 sponsors, 40 races featuring 12 Grade ones gathering over five very special days. Punchestown’s legacy extends far beyond the racecourse rails and we are proud of our connection with community groups, charities, the GAA, sports clubs and our neighbours. People Make Punchestown.

KING OF THE BANKS RISK OF THUNDER
There are certain names in racing that seem part of the place itself. At Punchestown, among the winding banks and tricky turns of the cross-country course, Risk Of Thunder is one of them. Trained by Enda Bolger and owned by Sir Sean Connery, he made a name for himself on the banks, winning 12 races at Punchestown, including seven La Touche Cup victories between 1995 and 2002. The 2001 race wasn’t run, so his run of wins was never broken. A special moment came in 1999 when Bolger rode Risk Of Thunder to La Touche Cup victory before retiring as a jockey, marking a memorable chapter in both their careers. Known for his calmness and sure-footedness, he became a standard for cross-
country horses and a favourite among riders and fans alike. His

RACE SUMMARY EL FABIOLO, who has so much class, has to be given maximum respect back over the smaller obstacles. He’s returning to action having fallen in three of his last four high-class chases and should enjoy this assignment. He’s two from three at Punchestown including in a novice hurdle. Ballyadam placed in the last two renewals of the Coral Cup at Cheltenham and looks a big player in his bid for back-to-back victories. Glen Kiln is another who commands respect, while Martin Brassil’s French-import Ain’t Got Wings is worth a market check. Spillane’s Tower should come on from an unplaced effort on seasonal reappearance in Naas.

RACE SUMMARY KLASS LANGY has plenty of notable form in France and could go well with Hugh Horgan taking 5lb off his back. He actually went off favourite on stable debut for a valuable handicap chase at Cheltenham last month and the return to hurdles might aid his cause. San Hilario is on a dangerous weight for the red-hot team of Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy. The form of Theflyingbee’s runner-up berth in Navan received a significant boost when the winner followed up at Leopardstown over Christmas. Theflyingbee’s two victories came over similar trips to this one, while A Dream To Share is likely to put it all together over flights sooner rather than later.

RACE SUMMARY The Tom Mullins-trained SPACE WARRIOR may be able to gain a second career victory in a race which lacks any strength in depth. Rated much higher in the past, the four-year-old son of Belardo shaped with promise when mid-division at this track last month. Although he will need to back up that effort if he is to land this, the gelding seems to run his best races on tight, right-handed tracks. King Bob, who showed his first hint of ability when third at Tramore in October, is a lightly-raced gelding that should be open to further improvement. Blue Reed has had plenty of chances but perhaps the application of first-time cheekpieces can bring about the necessary improvement.

RACE SUMMARY A promising fifth on her introduction at Fairyhouse in April, LUCIOLE DES BORDES can land this finale. Sent off 25/1 for that valuable sales bumper, the Willie Mullins-trained daughter of Jeu St Eloi belied those odds with a nice effort to get within six lengths of the winner. Sure to have come on for that experience, it would be no surprise to see the four-year-old register a first career success. Given the form of the Gordon Elliott team all week, recent Monksgrange point-to-point winner Sound Judgement has to be respected on her Rules debut. A half-sister to a black-type horse, Tramore bumper runner-up Lilannbee looks to be gradually improving with each start.

BETTING EXPLAINED
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows: All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners – 1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3 Handicaps of more than 15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3,4
HANDICAPS EXPLAINED
After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests. For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals. The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen! 65
