WELCOME

WELCOME TO

Dear Friends Of Punchestown,

On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to the opening day of the 2025 Punchestown Festival, William Hill Champion Chase Day.

The Punchestown Festival is a massive event that ignites local pride and captures national attention. A celebration over 5 days for the culmination of the jumps season boasting 12 Grade 1 races and over €3.5 million in prizemoney drawing champions, dreamers, and crowds from far and wide With a reputation which brings both responsibility and pressure to deliver perfect jumping ground It is Ireland’s largest corporate hospitality event, where top class racing meets the glamour of fashion, the joy of entertainment, and creates special moments and memories that last a lifetime But beyond the numbers, the prestige, and the spectacle - Punchestown is more than that, Punchestown is special, Punchestown is tradition.

As we embark on a major milestone in our history, the 175th anniversary of Punchestown, our focus in 2025 has been to instil that tradition so that the business continues to evolve and grow so that we safeguard Punchestown for the generations to come. This would simply not be possible without the support of each and every one of you here today and the integral part you play in the tradition of Punchestown and for that I want to say Thank You.

Over the course of the season, 169 races were run at Punchestown, with 133 individual owners recording victories, highlighting great depth and diversity within the industry.

Owners are the backbone of the sport - supporting trainers, investing in young talent and helping to maintain the high standard in Irish jump racing. The KHR 200 celebrates not just one winner, but the collective contribution of all those who keep the sport thriving from season to season.

This year’s National Hunt Festival commemorates the 175 anniversary of racing at Punchestown, followed from last year’s 200 year of the Kildare Hunt Club association with National Hunt Racing. It was in 1824 that Hunt members first organized race meetings for the gentleman farmers and army officers based within the county to indulge their taste for riding over typical Kildare country. These meetings were held in various locations around the county before Punchestown became the home of Irish national hunt racing, in 1850, and the foundation of what we now know today as The Punchestown National Hunt Festival th th

To commemorate this occasion the Kildare Hunt Club is presenting a Perpetual Cup “KHR 200 Punchestown Leading Owner Cup” to the leading owner who accumulated the most wins at Punchestown from the first day of the festival last year to the last day of racing before the start of this year’s Festival. The cup will be presented to the leading owner, JP McManus, by the members of the Kildare Hunt Club at the beginning of today’s opening festival meeting. This presentation is to acknowledge the important role that racehorse owners have in the continued success of Punchestown.

Many would be familiar with the complete set of Punchestown fine art prints by John Sturgess of the famous Conyngham Cup 1872.The handcolored aquatints show Punchestown Racecourse in four fine pictures –The Start, The Double, The Stone Wall and The Finish. A copy of these prints adorns the walls of many homes and offices not only in this country but around the world. We were very fortunate to acquire the four original oil paintings by Sturgess and to mark this year’s 175 anniversary the Punchestown board and management will be releasing one hundred seventy-five special copy prints from the originals to mark the occasion. th The prints will be on display at the main entrance area and will be available for sale later in the year. The monies raised from the sale will be going to both our two neighboring charities Tiglin and Barretstown Camp, two worthy causes with a long association with Punchestown.

We hope you enjoy this year’s Punchestown National Hunt Festival 2025

RACE SUMMARY

FRALIMONTI BILBERY comes here in good form and has experience over the ‘banks’ in point-to-points. He won a winners’ event in January before two runner-up efforts against decent sorts, most notably chasing home Vital Island at Lingstown on his penultimate point outing. Last year’s winner Knockiel Synge was 10 lengths behind the selection that day and has to carry a penalty in this. Course form is always a big plus, though, and he has to be respected Cloudy Tuesday comes into calculations as well

WIN: FRALIMONTI BILBERY

RACE SUMMARY

STAY IF U WANT TO won nicely at Kelso last time and gets the vote in a wide-open looking affair The Soldier Of Fortune gelding looks progressive and could still be on a nice mark off 116 Rocheval finished second to the selection that day before falling when in front at the same course the following month. He’s entitled to get closer now at the revised terms. Luminous Light comes here on a hat-trick and is another to bear in mind

RACE SUMMARY

SERIENMOND may be worth a shot here despite being a few pounds out of the handicap The Sea The Moon gelding was a cosy winner on his first outing for Gavin Cromwell and got going a bit late after meeting some traffic when third on his most recent outing at Fairyhouse Ascending Lark comes here having won five on the bounce and was a cosy winner at Ludlow last time. She could still be on a competitive mark. Willie Mullins has a good record in this race and top-weight Gaucher is another who commands respect.

RACE SUMMARY

Willie Mullins saddles four of the six runners and KOPEK DES BORDES is very hard to oppose The No Risk At All gelding comes here with an unbeaten record and has already struck at the top level twice this season. He survived a mistake at the last to win the Supreme at Cheltenham last month and can complete his Grade 1 hat-trick. Stablemate Salvator Mundi was behind him in fifth at Cheltenham but improved to win impressively at Aintree He’s the obvious danger, ahead of Fairyhouse Grade 2 winner Irancy.

RACE SUMMARY

BALLYBURN didn’t give his true showing at Cheltenham but may be able to bounce back now. He looked like he wanted this kind of trip when scoring at Leopardstown’s Dublin Racing Festival and is worth another shot. Stablemate Lecky Watson was good at Cheltenham and is the one to beat on that evidence. He jumps well and three miles brought out the best in him on that occasion. Another strong candidate for Willie Mullins is Impaire Et Passe, who steps up in trip after a fine performance at Aintree

RACE SUMMARY

LEADER DES BORDES is a fascinating runner for Willie Mullins and Gigginstown. He made €210,000 as a store and the fact that Patrick Mullins takes the mount would suggest he’s the pick of the yard’s quartet Santo Sospir is already a bumper winner, having got up late on to score here in February. He looked like he would improve from that experience and is entitled to be a big player. There are also three point-to-point winners in the field and Barry O’Neill’s booking for Green Style catches the eye.

FEATURE WILLIAM HILL CHAMPION CHASE

FACTS & STATS

OVERVIEW

The feature race on the opening day and one of the highlights of the season in the two-mile chase division. Slick jumping and pace often comes to the fore when trying to land the William Hill Champion Chase and since Shower of Silver (1955 & 1956) won two renewals, there have been seven further dual-winners of this prestigious contest. Willie Mullins has won this race a record eight times, while Pat Taaffe and Paul Townend hold the record from the saddle

KEY TRENDS

15 of the past 16 winners had previously won a Grade 1

23 of the past 27 winners were aged 8+

15 of the past 21 winners have contested the Champion Chase at Cheltenham

Having only his third start of the season, Banbridge ended Willie Mullins’ dominance to take home glory in last year’s renewal. In the colours of Ronnie Bartlett, he knuckled down well under J J Slevin to show much improved form from the Ryanair at Cheltenham. 2024 Champion Chase winner Captain Guinness looked to have the race at his mercy after taking the lead two out but it was Banbridge who produced a storming late run. The first-time cheekpieces may have played a significant role in this classy performance.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Willie Mullins yet again plays a strong hand with El Fabiolo and Fact To File to try and continue his dominance.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Marine Nationale attempts to complete the CheltehnhamPunchestown double and has been well-supported for Barry Connell Dual Grade 1 winner this season Solness was no match for Marine National at Cheltenham but his bold front-running tactics always make things interesting.

Last year’s runner-up Captain Guinness will need to roll back the years, while Senecia will need to back up his Grade 2 success at Navan.

Last year’s winner: Banbridge GRADE 1

RACE SUMMARY

It was slightly surprising to see this as the target for FACT TO FILE, but Willie Mullins obviously feels the Poliglote gelding can operate over the minimum trip The eight-year-old travels strongly in his races and is a slick jumper After a highly-impressive win in the Ryanair at Cheltenham last month, he can add another feather to his cap The Champion Chase winner Marine Nationale will take a bit of beating though. Barry Connell’s charge was just edging things when left clear at the last at Cheltenham and was a deserved winner. Solness looks the likely front-runner and could make it a good test

RACE SUMMARY

STARTING FIFTEEN made a very promising start when runner-up in a Listed bumper at Limerick last month and could take a bit of beating now.
