Today is a little different, as we host our one and only flat meeting of the 2025 season here at Punchestown. Though nearly four months have passed since our last race day, the summer seems to have flown by. During that time, we’ve had the chance to reflect on the season gone by, listen to feedback, and make improvements so that each visit is even more enjoyable. Your thoughts are always welcome, and we encourage you to share your experience with us as we continue striving to deliver the very best day at the races.

RACE SUMMARY

LOOKINGFORARAINBOW has an excellent pedigree and showed ability in a hot maiden on debut. Having met some trouble in-running at the Curragh, she finished nicely, with the winner landing Saturday’s Ingabelle Stakes, and has every chance of finding the necessary improvement required to get off the mark. White Sand Beach is out of a triple-Group 1-winner Alice Springs and is likely to be smart. La Fogata has proven ability and finished fourth at Group 3 level last month, while Chicago Moon and Zermatt Star are each related to smart performers.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

By a promising first-season sire, the selection is out of a smart Listed winner and is a half-brother to a Group 2 victor. He showed promise in a smart maiden on debut and while beaten five lengths at that course recently, endured a rough passage then and could become a capable type. PLAYIN COOL attracted plenty of support on his debut at Gowran Park and showed promise when fourth to Lavender Breeze. The Belardo gelding met some trouble in running that day and may have finished a bit closer with a clear run. There is scope for a nice bit of improvement. Edge Of Seventeen has been placed on both outings this term and looks an obvious danger. She is tried in cheekpieces now. RACE SUMMARY

SLANEY SWAGGER deserves to get his head in front after three placed efforts. The Profitable gelding finished off well when getting within half-a-length of The Bog Bank at Gowran a fortnight ago and going slightly further again now should help. The lightly raced Miss Americana showed improvement when runner-up at Clonmel five days ago and could be the danger now. Ms Olivia has a similar profile, having also stepped up when second at Tipperary last time, and is another that has to come into calculations.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

A er three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

HORSE WELFARE

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look a er the wellbeing of all horses.

In total two veterinarians are in attendance at today’s meeting.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
