RACE SUMMARY KENOUGH is probably the pick of these from the Flat and showed definite promise on both outings at the Curragh. The Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding ran on the opening day of the turf season and was absent until again finishing well when fourth over 1m2f last month. Danny Power scored in fine style on debut at Listowel last month and could be the main threat, while Sea Of Dubka is another to consider.

RACE SUMMARY SILLY MONGOOSE won a Kilbeggan maiden in June and was placed in a Clonmel handicap most recently. That race has already thrown up a couple of subsequent winners, and the Pat Foley-trained gelding may prove difficult to beat. Chantilly Wings has shown plenty of promise in maiden hurdles and was again placed when switched to handicap company at Downpatrick last month. Beyond Forgiveness probably found 2m6f too far at Listowel last time and is a threat on handicap debut, while Pavilion End is another to consider.

RACE SUMMARY LIVE TO LAUGH showed plenty of promise when third off this mark at Listowel a couple of weeks ago and that form gives him a big chance here. Labondance had useful form in France and an initial mark of 105 could prove to be lenient. Smackwater Jack is a dual course winner and is up 5lb for last week’s victory at Fairyhouse. The veteran enjoys a sound surface and will have conditions to suit once again.

RACE SUMMARY Ballinrobe bumper winner EALU TAPA ran well on his second start over hurdles when fourth to smart Flat stayer Dallas Star over 2m at Navan. He split a pair of subsequent winners and this step up in trip is likely to suit the Getaway gelding. Pat O’s Rock won a 2m3f bumper easily at Kilbeggan and there are lots of winning hurdlers in her pedigree. Runner-up in three maidens this year, Doctor Elvis has a healthy rating and should not be written off.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests. For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals. The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

RACE SUMMARY After a few near misses, GRANLAHAN bolted up when sent off odds-on favourite at Fairyhouse on Saturday and only has to carry a 7lb penalty. He’s stepping back up in trip from 2m, which is a slight concern, but ran a cracker over an extended 2m2f when chasing home a well-treated rival at Listowel in September. Bossy Bird was a hampered second over 2m4f on her latest start in this grade at Cork in July and will appreciate dropping in class after a respectable run at Ballinrobe. Poetic Focus is up 3lb after being touched off over a longer trip at Clonmel.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race! VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them. CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process. TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

RACE SUMMARY LEO MESSY should have more to offer after just three runs in handicaps. He stayed on well over 2m1f when placed at Cork and his front-running fourth over 2m3f at Navan is solid form for the grade, with the winner following up next time and the second running well at Listowel. The six-year-old can turn around a narrow deficit with the much more exposed Navan third Tuckmill. No Big Deal was a winner last October at Clonmel and comes here on the back of a good effort at Gowran. Las Brisas Boy is another to take seriously.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows: All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners – 1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3 Handicaps of more than 15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3,4

RACE SUMMARY BACK IN FAVOUR has been running creditably against geldings and might be able to strike here in mares’ company. Third at the Galway Festival, she filled the same position behind a smart newcomer at Listowel and the runner-up landed a maiden hurdle last week. Eastern Whisper is a newcomer to note with Patrick Mullins in the plate. The Sea The Stars five-year-old is out of a Listed-placed, 1m4f winner in France, and the jockey booking is really interesting. There was market support for Junction Road before her debut fifth at Down Royal and she has since joined Henry de Bromhead.

DID YOU KNOW

Punchestown is the only racecourse in Ireland that hosts cross-country racing over 35 obstacles styled on natural countryside fences, banks and hedges.

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today. D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit. CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards. C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course. BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today. So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.
