WELCOME

WELCOME TO

Dear Friends Of Punchestown,

On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to Day 3 of the 2025 Punchestown Festival, Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle Day.

The Punchestown Festival is a massive event that ignites local pride and captures national attention. A celebration over 5 days for the culmination of the jumps season boasting 12 Grade 1 races and over €3.5 million in prizemoney drawing champions, dreamers, and crowds from far and wide With a reputation which brings both responsibility and pressure to deliver perfect jumping ground It is Ireland’s largest corporate hospitality event, where top class racing meets the glamour of fashion, the joy of entertainment, and creates special moments and memories that last a lifetime But beyond the numbers, the prestige, and the spectacle - Punchestown is more than that, Punchestown is special, Punchestown is tradition.

5th that

As we embark on a major milestone in our history, the 175th anniversary of Punchestown, our focus in 2025 has been to instil that tradition so that the business continues to evolve and grow so that we safeguard Punchestown for the generations to come This would simply not be possible without the support of each and every one of you here today and the integral part you play in the tradition of Punchestown and for that I want to say Thank You.

Festival Thursday is all about stamina as the Grade 1 €300,000 Ladbrokes Stayers Hurdle takes centre stage on day three. I would like to welcome all the team from Ladbrokes who are long standing supporters of Punchestown back to the Home of Irish Jump Racing. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our partners today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. Without their involvement it wouldn’t be possible for us to attract and showcase the very best jump racing stars on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season.

o upport ement t e

Today also features the famous Mongey Communications Cross Country Chase for the La Touche Cup which is one of the highlights of the year at Punchestown and a spectator favourite. Punchestown boasts the only cross-country course in Ireland, a race over four miles with 35 obstacles to be encountered it’s certainly hard to believe that this race often produces the tightest of finishes. This years renewal is also the penultimate leg of the prestigious Crystal Cup and we welcome those who have travelled for that in particular

The Goffs Punchestown Sale is scheduled to take place this evening after racing in the fitting location of the Punchestown winner’s enclosure. A select number of top bumper and point to point winners who have impressed over the last number of weeks will go under the hammer to the leading trainers, owners and bloodstock agents in the industry. It’s a fantastic spectacle and we look forward to welcoming many of them back to the winner’s enclosure at Punchestown as their careers continue

The Punchestown Festival really is something to savour, and we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and hopefully you get a few winners as well!

RACE SUMMARY

A winner over fences at Ayr last month, THE OTHER MOZZIE is well treated back over flights. Raised to a mark of 145 after easily landing a premier handicap, the Gavin Cromwell-trained gelding can run off just 119 here. Lightly raced over hurdles, the six-year-old has the scope for further improvement and has been found a nice opportunity to exploit his current rating. Kap Ouest has proved somewhat disappointing in recent starts, but trainer Harry Fry always deserves maximum respect at this particular meeting. It would be no surprise to see an improved performance from the British raider Mercury Mission is an improving gelding who has to hold every chance of completing his hat-trick.

RACE SUMMARY

TULLYHILL might have the class to concede weight to his rivals. Runner-up in the Grade 1 bumper at the Festival here a couple of seasons back, the Willie Mullins-trained gelding easily landed a Listed novice hurdle at this track the following year Although pulled up on his only subsequent visit here, the seven-year-old looks nicely handicapped over fences. Runner-up in two of his three starts to date, the son of Martaline has to be respected for leading connections. Aspire Tower may never reach the same heights as a chaser that he did over flights, but the Henry de Bromhead-trained nine-year-old remains a smart horse Recent Cork winner Mirazur West arrives in excellent form following that first success in this sphere.

HORSE WELFARE

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all horses.

In total five veterinarians are in attendance each day of the Festival

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

The horses’ welfare is our priority

The Association Of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)

The Crystal Cup European Cross Country Challenge brings together the finest international horses and riders to reward the most successful stable in cross country steeple chasing.

The 12 race series, with over €850,000 in prize money, will be hosted by many of Europe’s premier racecourses, over unique combinations of hedges, banks, ditches and timber.

The Challenge began in late August at a packed Waregem Racecourse in Belgium, whilst the final race is at Lion d’Angers on May 29th following further races in France and visits to Poland, Italy and to Czechia for the Velka Pardubika.

After 10 legs, the action moves to Punchestown today during the Irish National Hunt Festival.

RACE SUMMARY

VANILLIER can make up for a luckless Cheltenham run by gaining some form of compensation. The Gavin Cromwell-trained gelding, who couldn’t land a telling blow in the Grand National latest, was prominent in the early stages at Cheltenham before dropping towards the rear after almost taking the wrong route. Having to make up considerable ground in order to get back into the race, the grey did exceptionally well to run on for third. Granted a clearer passage, he is very much the horse to beat. A previous winner of this race, the veteran Vital Island holds leading claims despite his advancing years. Three By Two should be involved as well WIN: VANILLIER EACH-WAY: VITAL ISLAND

RACE SUMMARY

Paul Nolan can land this nice staying prize with PARK OF KINGS. Fifth in a hot renewal of the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham, the gelding ran an even better race upped in trip at Aintree last month. With his stamina assured, the JP McManus-owned seven-year-old could be ridden a shade more prominently on this occasion. Having been a consistent performer all season, the Walk In The Park gelding can gain just reward Pertemps runner-up Jeriko Du Reponet gives McManus a strong hand in the race and Nicky Henderson’s gelding is a classy sort. Chart Topper could also go well

RACE SUMMARY

The ground will be much more suitable for SIXANDAHALF here after she skipped Fairyhouse due to testing conditions. The Snow Sky mare takes a drop in grade now after being nabbed late on in the Mares’ Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham by Air Of Entitlement. She looked all set for victory that day after travelling well to lead before the last and should prove hard to beat in this company. Karamoja could be the danger after a solid run to finish third in the aforementioned Grade 1 contest at Fairyhouse Karoline Banbou, who was sixth at Fairyhouse, has to enter calculations too.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only

All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2

All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3

Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3

Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4 Star Rating

RACE SUMMARY

It’s hard to oppose MAJBOROUGH here as he bids for compensation after an unlucky defeat in the Arkle at Cheltenham. The Martinborough gelding did well to stand up after a blunder at the second last and wasn’t good at the final fence either, eventually picking up again on the run-in to finish a close third to Jango Baie He can turn the tables on Only By Night, who was only a short head in front of the selection in a thrilling finish at Prestbury Park. The mare ran a cracker that day and looks like the main danger Jeannot Lapin is next best.

FEATURE LADBROKES STAYERS’ HURDLE

FACTS & STATS

OVERVIEW

The Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham is often a pointer towards the Champion Stayers, which was first run in 1995. The only horse to win both races was Anzum way back in 1999 until last year where Teahupoo completed the double Many horses with strong from over the minimum trip step up in distance to win today’s feature, so keep a keen eye on these. Willie Mullins has won the race a record 10 times, with the almighty Klassical Dream taking three renewals.

Derrymoyle (1995, 1996 & 1998) and Unowhatimeanharry are another pair of multiple winners of the race

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

PRIZE MONEY

€300,000

KEY TRENDS

Only three winning favourites in the last 10 years

13 of the past 14 Irishtrained winners had won at Punchestown previously

11 of the past 15 winners had won just once earlier in the season

Teahupoo was no match for the hat-trick seeking Klassical Dream in the 2023 renewal when fourth, but quickly established himself as the star stayer last term on both sides of the Irish Sea. He arguably had the quick ground against him, his previous successes coming on soft or heavy, but quickly dismissed the doubters to come home a devastating winner by six and a half lengths. As soon as he hit the front under Jack Kennedy, he was not for catching and went further and further clear on the run-in to give Gordon Elliott his first Champion Stayers Hurdle success. For the minor honours, Asterion Forlonge just held on to second by a head to the Savills Hurdle winner Home By The Lee.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Teahupoo (1st), Asterion Forlonge (2nd) and Home By The Lee (3rd) all line up to battle it out again in an exciting renewal of the Champion Stayers Hurdle. Although winning this race last year, Teahupoo was overturned at Cheltenham by Bob Olinger so will need to bounce back to his best. Owner-mate Hiddenvalley Lake also looks to have strong claims after landing the Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree, defying the re-opposing Jetara Long Walk Hurdle winner Crambo took an early exit in the Stayers’ Hurdle but still holds strong claims and can’t be dismissed either

RACE SUMMARY

TEAHUPOO can repeat last year’s victory. The Masked Marvel gelding is wonderfully consistent and despite losing his crown in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, he still ran a big race to finish second to Bob Olinger He is sure to turn up and give his running again and is the one to beat. Rocky’s Diamond ran a fine race to finish fourth at Cheltenham and he’s still only five. Declan Queally’s charge is open to further improvement and could be the danger Hiddenvalley Lake commands plenty of respect as well

RACE SUMMARY

KSAR FATAL is still in the could be anything category. The Buck’s Boum gelding was well touted before this racecourse bow at Gowran Park in March and left a big impression with an easy nine-length success. He obviously faces a stiffer test now but is fancied to go well UK raider El Cairos commands respect after a fine run to finish fifth behind Bambino Fever in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. He may be able to confirm form with He Can’t Dance, who was eighth that day. The latter’s trainer Gordon Elliott also saddles Koktail Brut for owners Gigginstown and he’s another to note
