RACE SUMMARY MADNESS D’ELLE brings strong Auteuil form for his Irish debut and is likely to be a smart performer. Placed third over hurdles on soft ground last May, that race’s winner was subsequently Grade 1-placed and the selection now debuts for top connections at an encouraging time of year. RACE SUMMARY ZUZUKEL was narrowly beaten here in November and has obvious claims. Although a 13-race maiden, the son of Frankel showed some promise on the Flat and produced a much improved jumps performance on his latest start. He is 4lb higher, but his rider claims 4lb. Be Fierce hasn’t run since a disappointing chase effort in August, but he has winning hurdles form and is suited by heavy ground. He is rated 7lb higher over fences and should compete on his reappearance. Jumble Light offered more encouragement at Navan last month, while Where Are You Now is open to plenty of progression and debuts in handicaps.

REMEMBERING JT MCNAMARA McNamara was a highly talented rider who blurred the distinction between amateur and professional. His ability in the saddle helped him to forge a long and successful association with leading owner JP McManus, for whom McNamara was an automatic choice for leading contenders in amateur events at major Festival meetings.

In all, McNamara rode more than 600 winners in his career which is more than many professional riders achieve. His victories at the Cheltenham Festival include the enigmatic Rith Dubh’s success in the 2002 National Hunt Chase and Spot Thedifference’s win in the 2005 Cross Country Chase.

RACE SUMMARY It was disappointing that Champion Bumper winner BAMBINO FEVER went under on her hurdling debut, but she remains a fine prospect for jumps. Undefeated in four bumpers, including twice at Grade 1 level, she may have needed the run when beaten by smart performer Oldschool Outlaw at Naas, with the third scoring next time. Willie Mullins also saddles Poetisa, who was bought for 300,000 pounds following her debut bumper win at Cheltenham last April but although she could be smart, she debuts over jumps against the race-fit selection. HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear?

Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.

Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows: All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners – 1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3 Handicaps of more than 15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3,4

RACE SUMMARY KIMI DE MAI won three bumpers in her native France and can now build on some useful hurdling form. Her smart French form was all on testing ground and having run well on her hurdling debut last January, she was subsequently well held at the Cheltenham Festival. Last month’s reappearance run was a useful effort in a hot maiden as the Champion Bumper winner finished second, while the third scored last week, and this won’t be quite as competitive. Lord Tobin has ability and although beaten 22 lengths on his hurdling debut at Navan, the first two horses are smart performers. Bergamasquo disappointed at Naas, but showed better form previously.
