C&D winner COKO BEACH should be difficult to beat back over his optimum distance. Successful here in February, the grey ran respectably in the Grand National before finishing third over 4m1f back here in the La Touche Cup in May. Still in contention when unseating four out in the Velka Pardubicka last time, he can regain the winning thread now. DESERTMORE HOUSE has shown his best form over fences notably when successful in the Kerry National at Listowel last year and reverts to hurdles off a 16lb lower mark compared to his chase rating. The selection was a creditable third to Noble Birth on his last hurdle start at Naas this spring and should be spot on after a couple of recent outings over fences. Real Steel held a career high rating of 166 over fences four years ago and has been rejuvenated by Eric McNamara to land two big handicaps including the Munster National last month. He also reverts to hurdles off an attractive mark, while others to consider include Shadow Rider and easy Sligo maiden winner Great Universe WIN: DESERTMORE HOUSE EACH-WAY: Real Steel

FARREN GLORY was a Grade 1 winner over hurdles last season and met a smart sort on debut over fences at Wexford before going one better at Naas last time The Gordon Elliott-trained gelding appeared to slip at a few fences but ultimately scored in decisive fashion and should benefit from that experience. Fascile Mode and Touch Me Not were only separated by a neck when fighting out the finish here last month, while Jordans has taken well to fences and also boasts winning course form in a 2m2f Grade 3. The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only
All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2
All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3
Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3
Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4
After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.
For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.
The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all horses.
In total three veterinarians are in attendance at today’s meeting.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
The horses’ welfare is our priority
The Association Of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)
John Durkan was the young man who saw Istabraq’s potential as a hurdler when he was racing on the Flat for John Gosden. He bought him for JP McManus and was to train him until he was struck down by leukaemia at the age of 31.
Istabraq went on to win the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham three times and, confirm himself as one of the greats.
Today’s race was first run in John Durkan’s honour in 1998, when Imperial Call beat Dorans Pride, and has been contested by Ireland’s best chasers ever since.
Last year’s winner Fastorslow is back to defend his title
The Martin Brassil-trained son of Saint Des Saints produced an impressive performance to see off persistent challenge of Appreciate It and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs to land the spoils.
Galopin Des Champs and Fastorslow have faced off a total of six times in recent years ,with the pair all square at three-a-piece. The former will be hoping to get the better of his rival over this distance after last year’s defeat. While he is the higher rated of the pair, he will need to jump better than last year in order to get the better of his rival
There is another entry that will threaten the hopes of the previously mentioned runners and that comes from the Willie Mullins yard too. Seven-yearold Fact To File has enjoyed a fine start to life on the track, including victory in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. He has only been beaten once over fences and this could set up and exciting contest for the racegoers here at Punchestown.
JP McManus, who owns Fact To File, is also represented by two others in this contest and they come in the form of Spillane’s Tower and Inothewayurthinkin with the former impressing last year His wins included three wins at the course, the latest being in the Grade 1 Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase back in April
Prior to that victory, Inothewayurthinkin came home a ready winner of the Kim Muir at Cheltenham before a comfortable Grade 1 success at Aintree While he has a bit more to find, he’s shown enough to indicate he can compete at the very top level.
The market seems to be a good indicator in this contest, with eight of the past 12 winners being favourites or joint favourites. Fastorslow, Galopin Des Champs and Fact To File are all popular choices so far.
It promises to be another fantastic renewal of the race, that will no doubt serve as an excellent form line throughout the season.

Galopin Des Champs didn’t jump as well as normal when third in last year’s renewal and the dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner is an obvious threat, while his stablemate Fact To File took to fences really well last season and won a Grade 1 over a similar trip at Leopardstown before following up in the Brown Advisory at the Cheltenham Festival Spillane’s Tower and Inothewayurthinkin were also Grade 1-winning novices in the same colours over fences. WELL DRESSED progressed with each run in maiden hurdles last season and appears on a reasonable mark as she steps into handicap company after a summer break. The selection had Union Station over four lengths behind in third when beating all bar the odds-on Rainbow Trail at Navan last time Sonny May justified strong support when opening her account at Gowran earlier this month and should make a bold bid to defy an 8lb hike in the ratings, while Lady Bresil represents a yard in great form and the lightly-raced Clonmel maiden winner has plenty of scope for improvement. RACE RESULTS
RACE TIME
After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

Soir De Garde catches the eye on pedigree being a half-brother to Champion Hurdle winner State Man, while Goldinthevalleys cost 220,000 euro as a yearling and has a Flat pedigree being by Siyouni out of a winning Galileo mare. You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.
