On behalf of the Punchestown team I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all on day one of the 2024 Punchestown Premiere Weekend We have renamed and rebranded these two special days as the stars of Irish jump racing take centre stage for their seasonal debuts.
Without our generous sponsors we would not be in a position to offer over €600,000 in prize money which in turn attracts the very best racing talent. To this end a sincere thank you to; Albert Bartlett, Boodles, Conway Piling, Mervyn Gray Construction, Ryans Cleaning, Sebden Steel, Total Event Rental and a very special mention to title sponsors, Unibet. Ed Nicholson and the Unibet team have been great supporters of Punchestown through the years and we are delighted to have them here this weekend
Today marks the first qualifier of the recently launched Albert Bartlett Triple Crown Series. This initiative was trialled last season as the Full Circle Series and offers horses in the 0 – 120 region an opportunity to compete on the biggest stage for great prize money. Thank you to Ronnie Bartlett and the Albert Bartlett team who recognised its potential and have come onboard to enhance and bring the series to the next level. We now have twelve qualifiers across England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The €100,000 final will take place on day one of the 2025 Punchestown Festival.
We must also thank Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital for their input across the 2024 Premiere Weekend Anglesey Lodge are an integral part of the veterinary team here at Punchestown and that is something that we value deeply The welfare of the horses is always at the forefront at Punchestown. Today Anglesey Lodge go one step further by sponsoring the stable staff refreshments to care for those who care for the horses. Thank you.
People make Punchestown and we encourage you to visit The Loft Bar on the first floor of the grandstand after racing for live music by Evolution. Happy to welcome some of our regular exhibitors back for a spot of festive shopping in the pavilion at the entrance. For the younger race goers, The Playroom is in action with face painting and games. This is located next to the horse walk so grab a coffee and take a break! Last but not least, there is a FREE trip to Lapland up for grabs. Be sure to get your “Golden Ticket” and pop it in the Punchestown post box to lodge your entry!
Remember, we do it all again tomorrow where the feature €150,000 Gr1 John Durkan Chase takes place. Gates from 10.00am.
Finally, a sincere and heartfelt thank you to you our customer. We really do appreciate your support and wish you an enjoyable race day with a few winners!
Tip of the day, the best gift for that special or indeed difficult-to-buy-for someone is covered with our 2025 Punchestown Club Membership, gift vouchers and Punchestown Festival 2025 tickets are on-sale in the main entrance building and on punchestown.com.

Punchestown is the only racecourse in Ireland that hosts cross-country racing over 35 obstacles styled on natural countryside fences, banks and hedges.
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all horses.
In total two veterinarians are in attendance at today’s meeting.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
The horses’ welfare is our priority
The Association Of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.
Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only
Regardless of their actual date of birth (or foaling to use a racing term), all thoroughbred racehorses in the Northern hemisphere sharethesame birthday- 1st January. IntheSouthern hemisphere all horses share 1st August due to the fact that the seasons are reversed
Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.
CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.
EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.
HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.
NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

Runner-up at Ayr when last seen in April, the Stuart Crawford-trained BALLYCOOSE can make a winning reappearance. Lightly raced over fences having had just the four starts, the seven-year-old is open to further improvement this term. Danny Mullins is a positive booking on a gelding who tends to run well off the back of a break. Wexford scorer Watch The Weather will find this easier having struggled in a Grade 3 at Cork and the consistent eight-year-old is likely to be very competitive for trainer Ray Cody Magic Tricks needs to step up considerably on recent runs over fences, but there is no denying the Gordon Elliott-trained eight-year-old is well handicapped WIN: BALLYCOOSE EACH-WAY: Watch The Weather

Run over two miles and half a furlong, the inaugural running of this race took place back in 1988 and was classed at Listed level, before progressing up the ranks to earn Grade 1 status in 2006. With the same size field as last season’s renewal, eight runners are set to battle out the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle, sponsored by Unibet, which has worked its way to become one of the key races in the Irish racing calendar
Willie Mullins has an excellent record in this contest, winning nine of the last 10 renewals. He is set to run five runners in a bid to add to that impressive record
State Man made it back-to-back victories in this race last year, winning comfortably by five lengths ahead of Echoes In Rain. He is set to face seven rivals in this year’s renewal in a bid to make it three in a row.
Another of his yard that will catch the attention is Lossiemouth who won the Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March after having found the winners’ enclosure 12 months prior in the Triumph Hurdle
She faces a big task against her stablemate but she is expected to have a fruitful year regardless of what happens today.
Another to keep in mind is the Gordon Elliott trained mare, Brighterdaysahead, who enjoyed a winning return to action at Down Royal earlier this month.
The five-year-old has won on five of her six starts over hurdles including a Grade 1 at Aintree Her only defeat came in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham earlier this year There is plenty of excitement about what she could achieve this season after what she has achieved so far.
All of the focus will be on State Man, who is already popular in the market as the seven-yearold gelding looks to add to his impressive list of victories. He’s unbeaten in his last six runs which have come at Punchestown, Cheltenham and Leopardstown and has only been beaten once since 2022, where he bumped into star hurdler Constitution Hill It promises to be another stellar renewal of the race

Champion Hurdler STATE MAN is hard to oppose in his bid for a third consecutive win in this race Arguably better than ever last season, the Willie Mullins-trained gelding was unbeaten in all five starts A horse who tends to run well fresh, he shouldn’t be found wanting for fitness, despite having bigger long-term targets. Stablemate Lossiemouth is likely to provide the greatest threat. A winner of eight of her nine starts, the mare has long been considered a genuine Champion Hurdle prospect. She gets an early opportunity to test the title holder here. The Philip Rothwell-trained BILLY LEE SWAGGER would be hard to beat if fit enough on his first start since April Fourth in a stronger race at the Festival, the five-year-old remains potentially well treated off a mark of 104. With his stable in fine form in recent weeks, the gelding can record a second career win. A fast-finishing second over the minimum trip here just over a week ago, the Matthew Smith-trained Cozone should again be involved Stepping up almost half a mile is also very much in his favour The lightly-raced Pax has to be of definite interest in what is only his second start in handicap company.

XRecent Down Royal winner JACOB’S LADDER should be able to confirm that form with runner-up Jerry From Kerry. Gordon Elliott’s five-year-old had plenty in hand on that occasion, being afforded the luxury of easing down close home Jerry From Kerry should once again provide the main opposition. Well supported when runner-up at Roscommon on debut, the Emmet Mullins-trained gelding easily beat a subsequent winner next time at Ballinrobe Runner-up at Galway last time, Heads Up should be good enough to make his presence felt in a race of this nature.
