WELCOME TO

Dear Racegoer,

On behalf of all the team here at Punchestown I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to the home of Irish jump racing. Today we have a different type of meeting as we stage our only flat fixture for the 2024 season at Punchestown.

Although almost four months have passed since we last raced it feels as though the summer has flown by. Those months give us the opportunity to reflect on the season past, consider feedback and implement changes as we continue to improve the Punchestown customer experience. Please always feel free to let us know how your experience has been as we endeavour to do the utmost to ensure that you have an enjoyable day at the races. Furthermore, we take great pleasure in welcoming our sponsors here today. Thanks to William Hill who are our title sponsors here today and of course the Irish European Breeders fund for supporting Punchestown and indeed Irish Racing as a whole We also have a very special race sponsor here today as we celebrate the 60th Birthday of a great Punchestown friend, Ger Dunne We hope that you and your family have a great day celebrating the occasion.

Last of all, we have a great afternoon of racing action ahead of us today and we then look forward to welcoming you all back here to open up the jumps season on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 October where we will open the jumps season at Punchestown in style!

Wishing you all an enjoyable season.

Furthermore, take pleasure welcoming Punchestown and indeed Irish celebrate the 60th of Punchestown hope that you and your ha forward to jumps Tuesda se

RACE SUMMARY

JOYFUL PRINCESS was well enough held on debut at the Curragh but that form is working out well and she should improve from the experience. Out of a Coolmore-bred unplaced dam, whose sister won at Listed level, she missed the break and raced keenly in the early stages. While beaten eight lengths into fifth, the daughter of Starspangledbanner finished reasonably well with the runner-up, the fourth and eighth-placed finishers each winning subsequently Mint Candy finished a length-andthree-parts ahead of Amangani on their Gowran meeting a fortnight ago and the pair are likely to be closely matched, as the latter was a little short of room on the inner for some of the home straight.

RACE SUMMARY

STORM PIECE has an excellent pedigree and showed good ability on debut. By the sire of Economics and out of a blue-blooded Group 1-winning dam, he contested a newcomers' maiden at the Curragh and while the form is largely unproven, the Ballydoyle-trained winner was well-touted while the eighth-horse subsequently finished runner-up. The selection looks smart and has a notable Beresford Stakes entry. Genealogy himself showed promise on Curragh debut 17 days ago and is entitled to improve plenty from that display, while his stablemate Lord Byron is from a fine Aga Khan family and is a half-brother to a multiple Group 3 winner

RACE SUMMARY

TRETHORN has been beaten long distances in three maiden runs but has a fine pedigree and showed some promise on his latest run. By Dubawi and out of a well-related Listed-winning dam, the selection finished behind subsequent St Leger winner Jan Brueghel on debut and all of 17 lengths behind last weekend's impressive Petingo Handicap winner Fighter and might improve in first-time cheekpieces from a manageable initial rating. Mooretown Lady has been running consistently well in useful handicaps and is dependable, while Gandolfo has been frustrating to follow but nonetheless was beaten just a short-head over this distance at Gowran a fortnight ago

RACE SUMMARY

STAR HARBOUR might ideally prefer a slightly longer distance but won over today's trip at Tipperary in August and arrives following a career-best effort when second from a rating of 105 at Dundalk. Akecheta's dam is closely related to 2000 Guineas winner Mark Of Esteem and while lightly raced, she has shown useful form. She ran well at Roscommon last time and now has a first-time tongue-tie Gesture has been gelded since his last run and his best form to date has been achieved on the all-weather

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

RACE SUMMARY

There was plenty to like about JARVIS BROOK's stable debut second at Gowran Park. He had been off for more than 16 months and was just pipped on that first start for Paul Nolan. The bounce factor obviously comes into play, but he travelled well at Gowran which bodes well for this assignment. Harseva has shown improvement since entering handicaps and is on a mark she can go well off Tartaraghan's runner-up effort at Down Royal reads well in the context of this race and she's noted too.

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED

You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.

D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.

CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.

C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course

BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.

So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only

All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2

All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3

Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3

Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

Plenty in with chances in a competitive handicap LIMESTONE RED ran well for a long way at Cork latest before finishing third and could build on that for Michael Halford and Tracey Collins. Finsceal Annie looks sure to be popular after delivering at Tipperary before just failing by a head to follow up at the same track. Prominent racer Simple Endeavour has finished second on her last couple of outings and ought to be in the mix too.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.
