WELCOME

WELCOME TO

Dear Friends of Punchestown,

On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to day two of the 2024 Punchestown Festival We say it time and time again, although it really is the people that make Punchestown, it simply would not be the same without you. We truly thank you for supporting us by joining us at the races today. We have a made a number of strategic changes to the festival this year with the aim of improving and enhancing what that the Punchestown experience has to offer which we really hope you will enjoy.

The eagerly anticipated renewal of the Grade 1 €300,000 Ladbrokes Gold Cup takes centre stage as the feature race today and I would like to welcome all the team from Ladbrokes who are long standing supporters of Punchestown back to the Home of Irish Jump Racing. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. It is their involvement that enables us to showcase the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. Although the season is far from over as we all gather to celebrate the biggest week of the year on the Irish Racing Calendar, with €3.5 million in prizemoney, featuring 12 Grade 1 Contests that makes Punchestown one of the annual highlights on the Irish sporting calendar

J.P. McManus is well renowned as being one of the greatest supporters of National Hunt racing, not only as a prominent owner, but also as the sponsor of the Adare Manor Opportunity Series, the final of which takes place today. This fantastic initiative provides young jockeys in the early stages of their career with a huge opportunity to gain experience and showcase their talent on the racecourse This is only one of the many ways both J.P. and Noreen support the racing industry for which we are extremely grateful and I’ve no doubt that we are looking at some of the potential future stars of the weighroom in action.

2024 is a very special year as it marks a very notable date in the history of the Kildare Hunt Club as the 200th Anniversary of the Kildare Hunt Races which originated in 1824 and provided the foundation of what has now evolved into the Punchestown Festival as we now know it. To commemorate this occasion the Kildare Hunt Club has very kindly donated a Perpetual Cup for the leading owner who accumulates the most wins throughout the Punchestown season. While an iconic set of four original Punchestown paintings by John Sturgess in 1872 have also been acquired and will be on public display in the Punchestown main office throughout the week and are certainly worth seeing.

The Punchestown Festival really is something to savour and we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and hopefully you get a few winners as well!

I look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow for more exhilarating action with the Ladbrokes Stayers Hurdle the feature highlight on Day 3 with the first race going to post at 3.40pm.

RACE SUMMARY

DARK NOTE has an each-way chance in a typically competitive renewal of this race Andrew Slattery’s charge is up in trip, but has contested some valuable handicap hurdles with a close second in the Lartigue at Listowel a notable effort. Harsh was trapped out wide in the Boodles at the Cheltenham Festival, but still finished fourth. A big run over this new trip wouldn’t be surprising. Maroto makes his handicap debut and, as the sole representative for Willie Mullins, has to be respected Final Orders has an obvious chance as he bids to exploit a much lower hurdles mark in relation to his chase rating. He wouldn’t want too much rain, though.

RACE SUMMARY

BLIZZARD OF OZ looks a likely sort for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend The form of his latest victory at Leopardstown was emphatically franked when the horse in fourth came out and landed a Fairyhouse Grade 2 novice hurdle by a wide margin. Answer To Kayf emerged from Cheltenham with credit following a staying-on fourth in the Martin Pipe He enjoyed a similar trip when delivering the goods at Naas and his rating of 138 entitles him to be heavily involved Backtonormal has form behind both Blizzard Of Oz and Answer To Kayf and has since switched stables to the in-form Gavin Cromwell

RACE SUMMARY

MISTERGIF ought to find this company to his liking. This Zarak gelding has contested Grade 1 contests on his last two starts and his fifth at Cheltenham and fourth at Aintree should have him more than competitive up in trip here. Cleatus Poolaw didn’t have the smoothest passage when unplaced in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham. Prior to that, though, he was in a consistent vein of form which gives him claims. Antrim Coast won his maiden hurdle over slightly further at this track. He found a Grade 2 assignment at Cheltenham too hot, but has been freshened up Nicky Henderson’s raider East India Express should be given a market check. WIN: MISTERGIF EACH-WAY: CLEATUS POOLAW

RACE SUMMARY

Gordon Elliott’s STELLAR STORY might take the scalp of Dancing City again. He beat Dancing City into third in the Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival and his vanquished foe came out and scooted home in a Grade 1 at Aintree Stellar Story has had a break since Cheltenham and could just be the fresher of the pair Stellar Story’s stablemate Better Days Ahead would want more rain but shouldn’t be underestimated, while Backmersackme is pitched in here for shrewd connections.

RACE SUMMARY

JASMIN DE VAUX came wide and ran out a convincing winner of the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham and can confirm that form with several of these rivals that finished in behind The Tirwanako gelding quickened up nicely in testing conditions then to beat Romeo Coolio and it’s hard to see the runner-up turning the tables. Gordon Elliott’s well-regarded charge could be suited by better ground now, though. A bigger danger may be the Barry Connell-trained William Munny. This Westerner gelding is unbeaten in two starts and was impressive when scoring at Naas in February. His trainer is very bullish about his ability and the six-year-old has the scope for further improvement. WIN: JASMIN DE VAUX

FEATURE LADBROKES GOLD CUP FACTS & STATS

GRADE 1

OVERVIEW

One of three Grade 1 races run on the second day of the Festival, the Gold Cup is the only Grade 1 Steeplechase on today’s card. First run in its current format in 1999, the first two renewals went to the legendary Ruby Walsh, who bowed out as a fan-favourite aboard Kemboy in 2019 Willie Mullins has seen a lot of recent success in this race, landing five of the past 10 renewals despite seeing Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Al Boum Photo and Galopin des Champs defeated

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

PRIZE MONEY

€300,000

KEY TRENDS

4 of the past 9 winners had won at Aintree

17 of the past 19 winners were aged 7-9

13 of the past 18 winners were second-season chasers

Possibly the upset of the Festival came in last year’s renewal when the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin des Champs was denied Fastorslow proved just how strong the Ultima form was behind Corach Rambler to deny one of the best in the business. His performance was different quality and was ridden to pick up the crumbs late, helped by Bravemansgame and Galopin des Champs getting racing a long way out. This was no doubt a career-best performance and has proven to be no fluke in time.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Old Rivals Galopin Des Champs and Fastorslow will go toe-to-toe again in this years renewal of the Gold Cup The market has the dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner as clear favourite, but it may be that Fastorslow has been overlooked. 2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler is quickly turned around after unseating at the first in this season and is the sole representative from Britain. King George VI Chase hero Hewick was clearly unsuited reverted to hurdles at Aintree, while Journey With Me steps back up in grade in what looks a competitive renewal.

RACE SUMMARY

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS did get turned over in this last year but it’s hard to oppose the dual Gold Cup winner After a below-par effort on his return this season, in the John Durkan, he has been imperious in the top staying chases, culminating in a dominating performance at Cheltenham. Obviously Fastorslow lowered his colours in this last year and also in the John Durkan. He was no match for a peak Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup and didn’t get a chance to test him at Cheltenham last time Corach Rambler ran a cracker when third in the Gold Cup before a first-fence exit at Aintree in the Grand National He could be place material WIN: GALOPIN DES CHAMPS EACH-WAY: FASTORSLOW

RACE SUMMARY

LETS GO CHAMP looks on a nice weight and can land a deserved success. The Jeremy gelding has performed well in his three chase starts to date and ran a big race on his handicap debut when third to Hgranca De Thaix at Limerick in March. He remains on the same mark and there looks to be scope for further improvement. Willie Mullins saddles three with James Du Berlais heading the weights. He ran a big race when second over the National fences at Aintree last time and is only 1lb higher in this. Seddon had a terrific campaign last season and is one to note in the market on his return

Race preview from Weatherbys

Today’s eight race card concludes with the Weatherbys General Stud Book Irish EBF Mares Bumper, a Grade 3 contest which Willie Mullins has won four times in seven runnings. The recently crownedBritishChampionTrainer saddles four of today’s 14 runners, with his son Patrick (seemingly) opting to ride Aurora Vega, a daughter of Quevega, winner of the Champion Stayers Hurdle at this meeting in four successive years.

Thethirdfoalofthetop-classrace mare, the six-year-old won three times between June and lateSeptember, before returning from a 128-day break when finishing fourth behind stable-mate Fleur AuFusil inaGrade2attheDublin Racing Festival. Better ground mighthelp, althoughshewillneed to settle a little better in order to close the gap.

Willie Mullins has won four of the previous seven renewals.

Thewinnergallopedonstronglyin the hands of Jody Townend and given that she has partnered the Kapgardemareonallthreestarts todate, perhapsjockeysbookings sorted themselves out. A winner at Naas on debut, she went on to finish seventh in the Weatherbyssponsored Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, form that will be tested earlier in the day with the front two clashing again in the Grade 1 (4:50).

Drying ground is an unknown, but she is bred to cope with it, being a half-sister to the smart Grand Sancy (winner of the Grade 2 Kingwell Hurdle in 2019). She sets the standard and interestingly, Augusta Kate, Colreevy and Grangee had all finished similarly positioned in the Champion Bumper before winning this for the same stable.

TheexperiencedFamiliarDreams islesscertaintocopewithquicker conditions having won a Listed race on heavy at Fairyhouse last time, whilst both Air Of Entitlement and Mozzies Sister both impressed when winning on testing ground at Cork.

Ben Pauling and owner Lynne MacLennan teamed up to win the Grade2NickelCoinatAintreewith Diva Luna and are represented here by Hereford winner Queens Melody, whilst sixth in that Aintree race, Speculatrix caught the eye with how she moved and is entitled to improve, given that it was her first start in 414 days. GordonElliott’sNoRiskAtAllmare had justified short odds when winning on the inside track here in February 2023 and could easily take a significant step forward.

ElliottalsosaddlesNeonDiamond, who is yet another heavy-ground winner .Successful at Limerick just 20 days ago, she had earlier been beaten by MagicMcColgan – another from camp Mullins – who was then beaten by the aforementioned Familiar Dreams at the Irish Grand National fixture. Both, therefore, would appear to have a bit to find.

RACE SUMMARY

FAMILIAR DREAMS can cap a fantastic season with a fourth straight bumper success. The Postponed mare has really come into her own this year with some powerful front-running performances, including a commanding success in Listed company at Fairyhouse last time She will make it a tough test for her rivals, particularly if getting a soft lead Patrick Mullins partners Aurora Vega from the four Closutton runners. The daughter of Quevega was beaten at a short price in the Grade 2 bumper at the Dublin Racing Festival having won her previous three Air Of Entitlement made a good impression on her Rules bow at Cork and is another for the shortlist.

ABBREVIATIONS

EXPLAINED

You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF

But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.

D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.

CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.

C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course

BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.

So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.
