RACE SUMMARY SPILLANE’S TOWER had Arctic Bresil and Firm Footings behind him when runner-up in a good novice hurdle at the Festival here and after settling for fourth on his chasing bow at Galway, he occupied the same position in the hot beginners chase won by Facile Vega at Navan. That experience gives him an edge over fencing newcomers Arctic Bresil and Firm Footings, who could still close the gap at least. Captain Conby has claimed minor money in a couple of Graded races, though, and might be the bigger threat.

RACE SUMMARY An easy point-to-point winner in November last year, Killaney King is very interesting on his hurdling debut, while Rainbow Trail also represents powerful connections and the expensive purchase impressed when landing a Clonmel bumper last month after a troubled passage. However, slight preference is for BLIZZARD OF OZ, who sets the form standard with his second in a Grade 2 bumper at Aintree in the spring and the Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old could have a very bright future over obstacles.

RACE SUMMARY The Henry De Bromhead stable has had a fine start to the season and RING O ROSES looks just the type to improve for stepping up in trip after an encouraging second over shorter at Gowran Park last month. A 3lb rise for that effort seems manageable and she can get the better of recent course second American Money and Dancing Jeremy, who could hardly have been more impressive when winning from the front here in October. Lazer Wolf (second) had the eye-catching Morricone (fourth) behind when runner-up at this track last month, and both are likely to be thereabouts again.

Regardless of their actual date of birth (or foaling to use a racing term), all thoroughbred racehorses in the Northern hemisphere share the same birthday - 1st January. In the Southern hemisphere all horses share 1st August due to the fact that the seasons are reversed.

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today. D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit. CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards. C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course. BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today. So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

RACE SUMMARY The market may prove informative with regards to the chances of the Willie Mullinstrained duo, with Micro Manage and Elixir D’Ainay both returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The latter mixed it with the best novices around in early 2020 and could be a cut above these if picking up where he left off, but the vote goes to the match-fit TACTICAL AFFAIR. Gordon Elliott’s four-year-old only just hung on to make a successful hurdling bow at Cork 16 days ago but has scope for plenty of improvement and represents an in-form yard.

RACE SUMMARY It is difficult to look past DUFFYS GETAWAY, who was an impressive winner on his return over slightly further at Fairyhouse last month. The six-year-old has similar conditions again, and he can overcome a 9lb rise, while upholding form with the progressive Kiln Time (second), who has won at Wexford and been second at Tramore since. Merry Moves bounced back to form with a solid placed effort at Fairyhouse last month and she also needs considering. Completing the shortlist are the likes of Lizlucky, Mahler Appeal and No Fussing.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests. For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals. The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows: All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners – 1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3 Handicaps of more than 15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3,4

RACE SUMMARY KISH BANK’s dam was a useful hurdler and this four-year-old could be pretty decent himself judged on his facile success between the flags last month. Gordon Elliott’s charge is likely to be a warm order on his debut under Rules and looks the one to beat, although Ufouria may be no pushover. She ran up to the highly-promising Only By Night on her debut at Limerick in October and Paul Nolan’s mare gets a handy 7lb from the selection. Slieve Carran had Seatoit (fourth) and A Tipp For Gold (ninth) in arrears when second at Thurles last month and could prove best of the remainder.
