RACE SUMMARY A case can be made for all of these but marginal preference is for VITAL ISLAND, who won the La Touche Cup over this course in April. His most recent effort in France can be forgiven and it would be no surprise to see him bounce back to form. Enjoy D’allen could prove to be a class above these rivals if taking to this test, while Blast Of Koeman and Singing Banjo are others who could make the frame.

RACE SUMMARY All eyes will be on TULLYHILL as he makes his eagerly-awaited hurdling debut. Bought for 220,000 pounds at the Cheltenham sale last November, the five-year-old created a deep impression when sauntering to victory at Gowran in March before running a fine race in defeat behind A Dream To Share in the Grade 1 bumper here. He has shown his versatility regarding ground conditions and is expected to make a winning start over timber. Shannon Royale is now tried in cheekpieces following his recent third at Thurles, while Mister Pink is capable of better after his second here last month.

FOX VALET RETIREMENT By way of background, Jimmy Fox, the founder of the very successful and highly respected ‘Fox Valeting’ came to Ireland from the UK after the war and got involved in Valeting, in those days it was very much the gentry that were involved.

Paul recalls spending his Communion Day at the door of the Jockeys room in Naas as Jimmy could not get the time off to bring him visiting. His first race experience was at Lingstown P2P in 1979 when he was 10, travelling down in the back of his dad’s Ford Cortina.

In the 1960’s Jimmy had some health issues, and his son Dave became involved with the business from a very early age and when Jimmy sadly passed away Dave took over the handling of ‘Fox Valeting’ before reaching the age of 30. Dave continued racing full time up until 2019 when Covid prevented him from going and when restrictions lifted, and racing started back up Dave reduced his involvement in day-today business of looking after jockeys. In 2011, after being involved in the business from a young age, Dave’s sons Paul and Robert took over full time operations.

Robert had a similar start; although he is 15 years Paul’s junior and missed some of the old guard. He went racing at every opportunity, staying outside the weighroom until racing was over then coming in to help clean up. Dave was highly committed to the Jockeys and his family always looked up to him for this, they knew for Dave it was more of a vocation and not really a job. From everyone involved in Irish racing over the last three generations we would like to thank The Fox’s for all they have done, and wish them the very best for the future.

RACE SUMMARY QUEST WITH SPEED was quite taking when opening his account in a maiden hurdle at Limerick on Tuesday. The six-year-old appears to be ahead of the assessor judged on that performance and he may be able to defy a 7lb penalty. Fellow handicap debutant Bob Cigar looks to be on a workable mark after some solid efforts in defeat in the spring and he may give the selection most to think about, ahead of last-time-out course winner Irish Envoy.

RACE SUMMARY IMAGINE wasn’t that far off the better novice hurdlers last term and looked made for fences when justifying favouritism in a hot beginners chase at Fairyhouse. Even though he steps up in class, he may not actually meet stronger opposition and can continue his education while making it two from two. Uncle Phil won as he liked at Kilbeggan and Listowel, but a couple of ordinary Wexford displays suggest he may not be entirely reliable. Lucid Dreams, successful in a Gowran handicap off 133 recently, is therefore put forward as the biggest danger.

JOHN DURKAN RACE PREVIEW Last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Galopin Des Champs heads a star studded line up for the master of Closutton, Willie Mullins. The seven-year-old arrives here looking to defend his crown and has to rate highly on all known form. Thirteen lengths separated him from the second placed runner Fakir D’oudairies 12 months ago and while there wouldn’t be many surprised faces should he rock up and do the same this year, he may not get things all his own way, with a couple of more than worthy rivals. Perhaps the biggest danger is Martin Brassil’s Grade One winner Fastorslow. He was the only horse to get the better of Galopin Des Champs last season with victory at the Punchestown Festival and was only narrowly denied by Grand National winner Corach Rambler on his previous start. His triumph over the Gold Cup winner was a shock but if he has taken another step forward then he has to rate highly. He may however find the trip on the short side on seasonal debut.

Willie Mullins is not just represented by Galopin Des Champs, he also sends four other runners, including the 2021 Supreme winner Appreciate It, three time Grade One winning chaser Blue Lord, 2022 National Hunt Chase winner Stattler and the talented but unpredictable, Asterion Forlonge. Blue Lord is well worth another go at the trip after finishing down the field in the Ryanair back in March. He is already a winner over the distance on testing ground but will need to settle better to see out the trip against some top rivals. Appreciate It has been tricky to place since his return from an injury, he’ll need things to go his way but has the talent to mix it with most on his day. Stattler could well find this a bit too quick for his liking while Asterion Forlonge could have had a King George and a John Durkan to his name, if he could have successfully navigated the final fence on both occasions. It promises to be another cracking renewal of the race.

JOHN DURKAN

A FINE RACE BY WHICH TO RECALL A TRULY OUTSTANDING MAN John Durkan was the young man who saw Istabraq’s potential as a hurdler when he was racing on the Flat for John Gosden. He bought him for JP McManus and was to train him until he was struck down by leukaemia at the age of 31. Istabraq went on to win the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham three times and, confirm himself as one of the greats. Today’s race was first run in John Durkan’s honour in 1998, when Imperial Call beat Dorans Pride, and has been contested by Ireland’s best chasers ever since.

RACE SUMMARY Gold Cup hero GALOPIN DES CHAMPS sets off on the path back to Cheltenham with him returning to the scene of his impressive display in this contest 12 months ago. The seven-year-oldthenpassedhistwomajorsubsequenttestsatLeopardstownandCheltenham before not being at his best when only second to the reopposing Fastorslow here in April. Freshened up since, Willie Mullins’ star performer is expected to turn the tables, with the drop back in trip unlikely to cause any issues. Fastorslow gained due compensation for a neck defeat in the Ultima to Grand National winner Corach Rambler with a career-best effort in the Punchestown Gold Cup. He remains open to improvement, but may have to play second fiddle on this occasion. Blue Lord and Asterion Forlonge appeal most of the remainder.

RACE SUMMARY STUZZIKINI handled testing conditions well when scoring by 31 lengths at Clonmel and a 9lb rise appears to be more than fair for Gordon Elliott’s gelding. Gabbys Cross (second) and Shadow Rider (third) both ran with a huge amount of credit in a Galway handicap that has already worked out due to the winner going on to claim a good prize at Cheltenham last week. The pair are expected to be in the mix once again, with Jody Ted and Cesarewitch hero The Shunter next best.

RACE SUMMARY The Passing Wife posted a solid fourth on his racecourse debut over hurdles at Cork earlier this month and that experience should stand Gavin Cromwell’s gelding in good stead on his bumper bow. However, there are two interesting recruits to this sphere in fellow pointer Prends Garde A Toi, who isn’t taken lightly, and SOIR DE GARDE. The latter, a half-brother to five-time Grade 1 winner State Man, ticks plenty of the right boxes and he may have too much class for these rivals.
