RACE TWO
RACE SUMMARY Several of these are interesting prospects and expensive point-to-point winner Mossy Fen Park has stacks of potential. Jhentong Enki also struck between the flags and was a fair third at Roscommon on his timber bow, while Brennus Lescribaa is another with some hurdling experience to call upon now and rates as the pick of Gordon Elliott’s two contenders. However, it is difficult to get away from PREDATORS GOLD, who impressed in a bumper at the Festival here in April and could be one of Willie Mullins’ more interesting novices this term.

RACE SUMMARY All eyes will be on GAELIC WARRIOR, who already heads the ante-post market for the Brown Advisory ahead of this first over the larger obstacles. The five-year-old’s only defeat last term came when chasing home potential superstar stablemate Impaire Et Passe in the Ballymore, after which he ran away from his rivals when upped to 3m in a Grade 1 here. Inothewayurthinkin is feared most after an eyecatching second behind Imagine over the extended 2m at Fairyhouse, while Cool Survivor can build on his chasing bow, when making Quilixios pull out all the stops at Limerick.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEOS
Photography and filming will take place throughout the duration of today’s racing. Your image may be included and subsequently appear in promotional material.
ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today. D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit. CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards. C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course. BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today. So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

RACE SUMMARY A case can be made for most of these but marginal preference is for HA D’OR, who is well handicapped based on the pick of his form as a novice last season. He fell when favourite for a valuable event at this venue when last seen in April, but it would be no surprise to see the six-year-old make amends here. Adamantly Chosen is capable of giving his stablemate plenty to think about, while Idas Boy edges out Mars Harper and Walk Away to be best of the rest.

UNIBET MORGIANA RACE PREVIEW Run over two miles and half a furlong, the inaugural running of this race took place back in 1988 and was classed at Listed level, before progressing up the ranks to earn Grade 1 status in 2006. With the same size field as last season’s renewal, four runners are set to battle out the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle, sponsored by Unibet, which has worked its way to become one of the key races in the Irish racing calendar.
Last year’s winner State Man is back to defend his crown, defying his stablemate Sharjah of landing 3 separate renewals which has only been achieved twice by Limestone Lad and Hurricane Fly, respectively. This five time Grade 1 winner had an unbelievable campaign last term, winning the Matheson Hurdle, Irish Champion Hurdle and rounded out a stellar season with a win at Paddy Power Champion hurdle here at last year’s Festival. His season would have been flawless if not running into the unstoppable machine Constitution Hill, who easily pushed him aside in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. However, he remains a class above his rivals on home soil and Willie has decided to saddle him over stablemate Impaire Et Passe who we still await to make his seasonal debut.
Willie also saddles the classy mare Echoes In Rain who was a runaway winner of the Mares Champion Hurdle here at last year’s Festival, kicking clear of the second placed Anna Bunina by nine and a half lengths. She will appreciate the tackier ground today and receives a handy 7lb allowance from her male rivals, which she has struggled against in the past.
11 of the past 12 renewals have gone back to Mullins yard in Closutton but the other went to Gordon Elliott who saddles the other two in the field. Pied Piper was a useful Flat performer for John Gosden but has taken his career to a whole different level since sent hurdling for his new stable. He’s got race fitness on his side, due to contesting the Cesarewitch at Newmarket, and only found the well-handicapped The Shunter too strong on that occasion and has shown glimmers of hope of winning at the highest level in the past. The field is rounded off by the second of the Elliot duo, Fils D’oudairies, who took full advantage of the nevertravelling Zarak The Brave at Tipperary. He deserves a shot at this level after bolting home by 30 lengths last time out. Could we see State Man go back-to-back today?

RACE SUMMARY STATE MAN proved too good in this contest last year for the first of four Grade 1 victories in a campaign that would have been flawless were it not for superstar Constitution Hill, who swatted him aside in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Willie Mullins’ six-year-old remains a class above anything in this division on home soil and should be set for another dominant season - in Ireland, anyway. Echoes In Rain landed the Mares Champion Hurdle here and could get closest to her illustrious stablemate, although Pied Piper may have something to say about that.

RACE SUMMARY YEATS STAR left the impression there was plenty more to come when pulling clear for a comfortable 2m2f maiden success at Downpatrick and while an opening mark of 122 may not leave him with too much room for error, he looks the most likely winner for his in-form trainer/jockey combination. El Champo made all to complete a Galway double but has a further 8lb rise to contend with and the biggest threat to the selection may come from Striking, who impressed when landing a maiden here in June.

RACE SUMMARY A second at Curraghmore on his sole appearance between the flags prompted Gordon Elliott to go to €200,000 for THE ENABLER. He could only fill the runner-up spot on his first start under Rules at Thurles last month, but the experience won’t be lost on him and he can go one better. Scamall Bawn had Toor Khov back in third when making a successful beginning to his career at Cork, although he isn’t guaranteed to confirm that superiority on the revised terms. In any case, perhaps £155,000 newcomer I Am Mimi will give the selection most to think about.

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests. For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals. The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!
