Stan went to work for Timeform from school. After several years there he joined Fothergill and Powell bookmakers on the racecourse. He then worked for Colin Webster, who was one of the biggest layers on the track. After leaving Colin, Stan became an online odds compiler for two firms. He also did some freelance work for Timeform and did the spotlight for the Racing Post. He spent a lifetime in racing.
In his 12 year stint with Colin Webster, we travelled 95,000 miles a year together – as far up the UK as Ayr and as far down as Goodwood. We would leave home in the summer on Monday evenings, getting back late Saturday night. 150 nights away a year in hotels. Stan was a brilliant clerk with the old book system at the festivals, taking 1000+ bets a day and getting them all out with total hold and liability. He also took to the computerised system like a duck to water. He was brilliant. He was a great travelling companion who loved to study the form, especially two year olds. My time with him was filled with fun, laughter and gambling. I can never repeat great days with a very clever pal, Stan the Man!

Fast fillies are special racehorses andtheWeatherbysDigitalSolutions Listed Pipalong Stakes run at Pontefract commemorates one of thetoughesttherehasbeen.
Pipalong, born in January 1996 and bred in Ireland by Yeomanstown Stud, was a daughter of the stallion Pips Pride and out of the Green Desert mare Limpopo, a first foal out of the 1987 Irish championoldermilerGreyGoddess (GodsWalk).
Yeomanstownsoldherasayearling atTattersallsOctobertoacashbuyer for 7,000gns. She was an inspired buy – for the following four racing seasons and through 37 racecourse starts her owners Tom Bennett and Marjorie Easterby, mother of the filly’strainerTim,enjoyedafinetime withthewell-boughtfilly.
As is so often with sprinters Pipalong produced her best as a four-year-old.
Pipalong’s racecourse debut in April asatwo-year-oldgaveconnections an idea of the talent she possessed – she won by a clear 12 lengths at Ripon. Her win next time out at York was a closer affair, she took on Bint Allayl and succeeded by a neck; the placings between the two subsequently reversed in the Queen MaryStakes(G3)atRoyalAscot.
Tim Easterby’s flying bay filly then wentontofinishsecondintheCherry Hinton Stakes (G2) at Newmarket to Wannabe Grand, picked up a fourth place in the Listed Oh So Sharp Stakes before collecting the Redcar Two-Year-OldTrophyinOctober.
At three she ran in some top sprints did not win until August – back at Ripon she beat the colts in the Great St Wilfrid Handicap. Subsequent outings
in the Group 1 Sprint Cup and the Ayr Gold Cup did not reap rewards and it was not until the last day of the 1999 Turf season in the 6f Listed Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster that she put her head back in front, the filly relishing her favoured softground.
As is so often with sprinters Pipalong produced her best as a four-year-old. She won on her seasonal debut before adding a first Group 3 to her CV with victory in the Palace House Stakes (G3) atNewmarket.
The tough campaigner then hit her form of life through July to September – she finished third behind Agnes World in the JulyCup(G1),filledthesameplacing in the Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) to Nuclear World before her careerdefining victory in the Group 1 Sprint Cup ahead of Sampower Star. Her four-year-old season concluded with another Group 1 third this time behind Namid in the Prix de l’Abbaye (G1) at the Arc meeting at Longchamp.
At five, she won the Duke of York Stakes (G2) but then did not trouble the judge again until another third placinginthePrixdel’Abbaye(G1).
As a broodmare she produced three winners headed by Walk On Bye (Danehill Dancer), who won the Anglesey Stakes (G3) and finished third in the PhoenixStakes(G1).
Pipalong was the perfect poster girl for breeding and buying on a budget, giving hope to smaller operatorseverywhere.
Bred by Yeomanstown Stud, she wasbythefarm’sowninexpensive and sadly short-lived sire Pips Pride out of the non-winning Green Desert mare Limpopo, who was discarded for just 9,000gns a yearaftergivingbirthtothefilly.
Pipalong was the perfect poster girl for breeding and buying on a budget.
Pipalong was sold to cash for 7,000gns as a yearling in Newmarket and joined the stable of Tim Easterby. Carrying the silks of Tom Bennett, who owned her in partnershipwithMarjorieEasterby, she stormed to a 12-length victory on debut at Ripon at two and finishedsecondintheQueenMary Stakes and Cherry Hinton Stakes andlandedtheRedcarTwo-YearOldTrophylaterthatseason.
Pipalong developed into a top sprinter, winning the Great St Wilfrid Handicap and Wentworth Stakes at three, the Palace House Stakes, Cecil Frail Stakes and
Haydock Sprint Cup at four, and theDukeofYorkStakesatfive.
She also ran third in the July Cup, Nunthorpe and back-to-back renewalsofthePrixdel’Abbaye.
The filly who had been bred and bought for such minimal sums retired with more than £420,000 inprize-money,andwassoldasa breedingprospectfor600,000gns. She became a member of the Coolmore broodmare band and clickedwithchampionsireDanehill Dancer to produce Anglesey Stakes winner and Phoenix Stakes thirdWalkOnBye.
Pipalong’s progress from upstart to aristocrat is reflected in the Weatherbys ePassport-sponsored Listed contest over a mile at Pontefract that is named in her honour, asitisregularlycontested bybluebloodedfilliesandmares.
This year’s edition, staged on Tuesday, is no exception. In fact, the likely favourite is one of the best bred females in training in Europe.
Doha, who won the Kensington Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, is by Sea The Stars out of her owner-breeder Al Shaqab Racing’s outstanding dual Prix de l’ArcdeTriompheheroineTreve.
The dam hasn’t excelled at paddocks so far, as shown by the fact that Doha is bidding to become her first black-type offspring of any kind, but she has every chance of doing so, as she won fluently last time and is still unexposedforRalphBeckett.
Both the Kensington Palace Stakes sixth Elim, an Ed Bethelltrained Make Believe filly from the family of champions Belardo and Danaskaya, and ninth Villanova Queen, a Jessica Harringtontrained Mastercraftsman mare out of an unraced half-sister to Sussex Stakes hero Here Comes When, re-oppose Doha in the PipalongStakes.
AstralBeau,runner-uptoCharynin theDoncasterMileinMarchanda close fifth in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom last month, also has a pretty impressive pedigree. She is by Brazen Beau out of Asteroidea, a winning daughter of SeaTheStarsandherindomitable owner-breeder-trainer Pam Sly’s rags-to-riches 1,000 Guineas victressSpeciosa.
Choisya, who has run well in Listed contests at Kempton and Goodwood this term for Simon and Ed Crisford, is another well bred contender. She is a Night Of Thunder half-sister to dual Listed winner Pelerin (third in the Pipalong Stakes in 2015), Fillies’ Mile fourth Masarah and ListedplacedBaseNote.
Naaey is an interesting runner for John and Thady Gosden. The daughter of Lope De Vega and the Listed-placed Oasis Dream mare Materialistic has run only twice, and not since winning a Wolverhamptonnovicestakeslast August.
Dora Milaje is also unexposed and could be anything. Elwick Stud’s homebred four-year-old filly, sent out by David O’Meara to win a Haydock handicap last month, is by her owner and breeder’s Woodbine Mile and Arlington Million winner Mondialiste and is out of Barefoot Contessa, an unracedDansilihalf-sistertoPoule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine BeautyParlour.
In fact, the likely favourite is one of the best bred females in training in Europe.

Anne hero Charyn in the Doncaster Mile on reappearance, a race she won in 2023, and was beaten just two lengths in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes last time.
