Parade of Former Racehorses

WE’RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE THREE EX RACERS WITH US TODAY WHO ARE ENJOYING THEIR WELL EARNED RETIREMENT.

GOLDREAM, NEARLY CAUGHT and CHIL THE KITE ran in 132 races and won just over £1.25 million in prize money between them – a trio of real superstars!

NEARLY CAUGHT (NICO)

Nico ran 40 races during his career for trainer Hughie Morrison which started back in April 2013. He retired from racing after a win at Newmarket in September 2018.

He was very much a stayer and often competed over marathon trips. He loved a trip to France and finished third in the Group 1 Prix Du Cadran at Longchamp and winning the Group 2 Prix Kergolay at Deauville

We’re not biased, but the highlight of his esteemed career came when he won the 2015 running of the Phil Bull Trophy at Pontefract by an impressive 10 lengths He’s an absolute gentleman at home and loves lots of attention and nothing more than rolling in the field!

GOLDREAM (REMY)

Remy ran 53 times in his career and was a real speedster for his trainer Robert Cowell He had an incredible year in 2015 – taking both the Group 1 Prix De L’Abbaye at Longchamp as well as the Group 1 Kings Stands Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He amassed almost £600,000 worth of prize money during his long career which started at Newmarket back in 2011. While he never ran at Ponte, he was a regular in Yorkshire running at York on 9 occasions

He is a lovely horse to deal with and has a wonderful, kind temperament.

CHIL THE KITE (CHIL)

Chil ran 39 times in his career, winning 6 times While he didn’t run at Ponte, he’s no stranger to Yorkshire having won at both York and Doncaster.

Born on the 11th April 2009, making him 14 years old, he’s (just) the eldest of the trio

His last racecourse appearance was in October 2016 and he went to New Beginnings in 2017. While he doesn’t have the same demeanour as Nico and Remy, he is very much a performer and loves to show off He doesn’t have the patience to stand on a Racecourse all day but enjoys his Dressage and also qualified for the Retraining of Racehorses Championship at Aintree last year

SEE THEM IN THE PARADE RING BETWEEN 12.50PM AND 1.10PM THIS AFTERNOON.

This memorial race, which is held in memory of a much missed Husband and Dad, has been held each year since his passing in 2003, to celebrate the life of Trevor - a local man who loved attending the races, especially here at Pontefract.

Janet, Neil & Lisa, Karen & Paul, Stuart & Claire, Liv & Luke would like to say a big thank you to all our friends and family for all their support over the last 20 years and for attending again today.

Having made an encouraging debut when runner-up at Newcastle, TAN RAPIDO went one better at Windsor next time and he can continue his progress to score again. John Quinn is capable of readying a newcomer and Master of My Fate could pose the biggest threat to the selection, ahead of fellow debutant Emerald Army.

The friends and family of Trevor Woods will present a memento to the winning owner in the Winner’s Enclosure after this race. A cash prize of £40 will be presented to the stable employee in charge of the best turned out horse.

THE KENNETH HAWLEY MEMORIAL RESTRICTED NOVICE STAKES

Dad and myself have been coming to (in his own words) “Ponty” for over 40 years. He loved all the meetings but especially the night meetings.

I’ve been very fortunate over the last 10 or so years to have owned 3 or 4 racehorses and I’ve taken dad to many racecourses over those years but living local to “Ponty”, his heart was always here and no matter where we went, “Ponty” was always home. He loved the place: the people, the staff and Norman Gundill who helped develop “Ponty” to be the fine racecourse it is today. He would often have a chat with Norman.

Dad sadly passed away on the 20th July last year and the race today is run in his honour and for me to say thank you for everything he did for me in life. It’s run in his memory but is for everyone here today who has lost someone close to them.

Rest in peace Dad and enjoy your day.

EVENING STORY’s return to action last week was satisfactory and, in a race lacking depth, this looks a good chance for her to get off the mark. Sheehan could be a different proposition away from the mud, while newcomer Catrake Force won’t have to be a world-beater to figure.

This year we would like to reward the yard that receives the most best turned out awards at the end of the season with a tasty treat! Currently at the top of the table is Paul Midgley’s yard, who have won seven Best Turned Out Prizes this year! Thank

you!

PLAY SMARTER

GALE FORCE MAYA bounced back to form when third in the Summer Stakes at York and a reproduction of that form may well prove good enough. Believing had excuses in a Group 2 in France so can be expected to bounce back despite her 5lb penalty, while Demi Pointe is an interesting contender back from an absence given how the form of her novice win at Chelmsford has worked out.

Pontefract Tanshelf is more or less opposite the entrance to the Park, whereas Monkhill and Baghill stations are more centrally located in Pontefract and are around 2 to 3 miles from the course. If you don’t fancy the walk through the Town, taxis are available at the stations.

There is a fourth station at Glasshoughton which adjoins the Xscape complex. This is a couple of miles from the Racecourse. If you have some time to kill, from near Glasshoughton Station (starting in the car park to B&Q!), there is a lovely walk through the Park to the Racecourse. It will take around 45 minutes.
