KEEP WARM should relish the step back up in trip and looks fairly treated on his handicap debut. He gets the nod in a race where the market should provide plenty of clues. Celestial Flight and Time Signature are also of interest.

STAR AHOY has shaped up well on all his three runs to date and with this longer distance sure to see him in an even better light he looks the way to go Kevin Ryan’s new recruit Jumeirah King showed some fairly useful form in France so rates the chief threat, with the consistent Iron Lion rating a solid place prospect once more.

PIPALONG

- THE FLYING FILLY

Fast fillies are special racehorses and the Weatherbys Digital Solutions

Listed Pipalong Stakes run at Pontefract commemorates one of the toughest there has been.

Pipalong, born in January 1996 and bred in Ireland by Yeomanstown Stud, was a daughter of the stallion Pips Pride and out of the Green Desert mare Limpopo, a first foal out of the 1987 Irish champion older miler Grey Goddess (Gods Walk).

Yeomanstown sold her as a yearling at Tattersalls October to a cash buyer for 7,000gns. She was an inspired buy – for the following four racing seasons and through 37 racecourse starts her owners

Tom Bennett and Marjorie Easterby, mother of the filly’s trainer Tim, enjoyed a fine time with the well-bought filly.

Pipalong’s racecourse debut in April as a two-year-old gave connections an idea of the talent she possessed – she won by a clear 12 lengths at Ripon. Her win next time out at York was a closer affair, she took on Bint Allayl and succeeded by a neck; the placings between the two subsequently reversed in the Queen Mary Stakes (G3) at Royal Ascot.

Tim Easterby’s flying bay filly then went on to finish second in the Cherry Hinton Stakes (G2) at Newmarket to Wannabe Grand, picked up a fourth place in the Listed Oh So Sharp Stakes before collecting the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy in October.

At three she ran in some top sprints did not win until August – back at Ripon she beat the colts in the Great St Wilfrid Handicap. Subsequent outings in the Group 1 Sprint Cup and the Ayr Gold Cup did not reap rewards and it was not until the last day of the 1999 Turf season in the 6f Listed Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster that she put her head back in front, the filly relishing her favoured soft ground.

As is so often with sprinters Pipalong produced her best as a four-year-old. She won on her seasonal debut before adding a first Group 3 to her CV with victory in the Palace House Stakes (G3) at Newmarket.

The tough campaigner then hit her form of life through July to September–shefinishedthirdbehindAgnesWorldintheJulyCup(G1),filled the same placing in the Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) to Nuclear World before her career-defining victory in the Group 1 Sprint Cup ahead of Sampower Star Her four-year-old season concluded with another Group 1 third this time behind Namid in the Prix de l’Abbaye (G1) at the Arc meeting at Longchamp.

At five, she won the Duke of York Stakes (G2) but then did not trouble the judge again until another third placing in the Prix de l’Abbaye (G1).

As a broodmare she produced three winners headed by Walk On Bye (Danehill Dancer), who won the Anglesey Stakes (G3) and finished third in the Phoenix Stakes (G1).

WEATHERBYS DIGITAL SOLUTIONS PIPALONG STAKES

The feature on today’s six-race card is the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Pipalong Stakes, a Listed event for fillies and mares over a mile, which has attracted a field of nine

William Haggas won the race back in 2004 with Chorist and his four-yearold Purplepay is clear on official BHA Ratings. Previously trained in France by Cedric Rossi, the daughter of Zarak ran five times for the Newmarket-based trainer last year, winning the Prix de Sandringham (Group 2) on her second run of the campaign. She could never quite recapture that form thereafter and has been over to Australia in the spring, most recently finishing down the field in the Sydney Queen Of The Turf Stakes in early-April.

If returning to her best, she sets a good standard and the forecast rain is certainly in her favour, with her four career wins being gained on soft ground.

Rated 95 and 12lbs inferior to Purplepay is Fall In Love, who is set to make her debut for Roger Varian. Previously trained in France by Hiroo Shimizu, the Sea

The Stars filly was last seen in action at Meydan in early-February, where she contested a Group 2 over this trip A soft-ground winner as a two-year-old, she failed to win at three, but was beaten just 4 lengths in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille over 1m4f That piece of form would make her a major player at this level, although she is another on a slight retrieval mission after a lay-off

Both Purplepay and Fall In Love have wide draws to overcome, with only Al Agaila out wider, in stall nine She was slowly away before running on quite well at Newcastle last month and will need to be sharper from the gate over this trip, with her two latest victories coming over 1m2f at Lingfield.

Gavin Cromwell’s Irish-raider Dha Leath comes back in trip, having run over 1m4f last time, and is another who appreciates really testing ground. The more rain that falls the better her chance will be, with her last two wins coming when the word ‘heavy’ featured in the going description. She has won four of her 10 starts for her current trainer (previously trained by Garvan Donnelly), during which time her I.H.R.B. Rating has risen from 68 to 92

Mary Salome is another runner from Ireland, with Andrew Kinirons’ daughter of Zebedee having won at Roscommon during June That handicap win came off just 77 and she was beaten in a small field, off just 1lb higher, last time She has plenty to find on official figures and that comment also applies to Kingmania, who won a Southwell handicap off 78 two starts back. Again, she has been beaten since and needs to put up a career-best to take a hand.

Zenga, a stable-mate of Fall In Love, and Love Interest finished seventh and 18th respectively in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot last time, with the former denied a clear-run in the closing stages. Despite being worse off at the weights, she can confirm that form and might be capable of further improvement, having undergone wind-surgery over the winter The lightly-raced Lope de Vega filly is certainly one of the more interesting runners.

The Charlie Johnston-trained Espressoo completes the line-up and is the most likely pace angle in the race She made all when winning a 7f handicap at Ayr in May, but was unable to dominate in this grade last month. If allowed her own way in front, she might be capable of a better showing, although she has stamina to prove on just her second start at the trip (only run over a mile to date came in last year’s Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot).

PLAY SMARTER

If anywhere near her best back from a 3-month break, PURPLEPAY should simply outclass these rivals. She was nearer last than first in a couple of top-tier races in Australia in March/April but her sights are lowered significantly here and she showed what she can do when landing a Group 2 in France last summer The Roger Varian-trained duo Zenga and Fall In Love can fill the places, with the former marginally preferred for forecast purposes.

There are 3 stations in Pontefract – Monkhill, Baghill and Tanshelf. Pontefract Tanshelf is more or less opposite the entrance to the Park, whereas Monkhill and Baghill stations are more centrally located in Pontefract and are around 2 to 3 miles from the course. If you don’t fancy the walk through the Town, taxis are available at the stations.

There is a fourth station at Glasshoughton which adjoins the Xscape complex. This is a couple of miles from the Racecourse. If you have some time to kill, from near Glasshoughton Station (starting in the car park to B&Q!), there is a lovely walk through the Park to the Racecourse. It will take around 45 minutes.
