MONDAY 9TH FEBRUARY 2026

WELCOME

Welcome to Plumpton for the Bentswood Hub Fighting Child Poverty Raceday

Welcome back to Plumpton for our first meeting of February 2026. At our last meeting we saw a double for Gary and Josh Moore, a 100th Plumpton winner for Nicky Henderson and Jack Andrews riding out his claim for trainer Tom Ellis.

I would like to welcome and thank today’s Raceday Sponsors. For those who don’t know, the Bentswood Hub offers local support through a larder and a range of other activities. It’s a vital part of our community and a lifeline for so many people across the area. Today we have a wide range of ways that you can be involved. We have a silent auction taking place outside the weighing room with some fabulous racing memorabilia (details in racecard), a food donation point will also be open outside the weighing room and there will be a bucket collection taking place on exit. Please give as generously as you can. I’d also like to offer a warm welcome and thanks to our friends at More Radio, Weatherbys, Old Gold Racing and Star Sports for their continued support of Plumpton. We hope that you have a great day.

Today we have another 7 race card with just under £70,000 in prize money. As we go to print, the undoubted highlight is the eagerly awaited debut of our Plumpton horse Answer That. Trained by Chris Gordon, shares are still available to buy through Old Gold Racing for just £60. Please use the QR codes across the course for more detail or go directly to their website. www.oldgoldracing.com

Our next two fixtures are on Monday 23rd February when we host our inaugural Jamie’s Farm Raceday and on Monday 9th March when we have our Star Sports Cheltenham preview before racing. Our racecourse team visited Jamie’s Farm last week (only 3 miles from the course) and were blown away at the work they do for young people. If you are thinking of booking tickets or hospitality for either day then make sure you visit our website or contact one of our team.

Don’t forget to put the Plumpton Racecourse Easter Festival in your diaries, which will be held on Sunday 5th April and Monday 6th April, by booking now you will secure our best ticket prices as this is our most popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.

Have a lovely day at Plumpton, Heart Of Our Community.

Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins.

Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared.

Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing.

Off the bridle - A term to describe a horse not travelling well.

On the bridle - A term to describe a horse travelling well.

Open ditch - A fence with a ditch on the take-off side.

Outsider - A horse whose chance of winning is considered unlikely.

Parade ring - The area of a racecourse where horses are paraded before each race.

Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race.

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race.

Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

All of these have strong claims, but marginal preference is for WHERE’S CATO. Evan Williams’ mare won on her chasing debut at Huntingdon last month and remains open to plenty of improvement. With that in mind, the seven-year-old can defy a 2lb rise here. Hors Jeu pulled 16 lengths clear of the third when a nose second at Hereford last time and is an obvious threat, while Star of Affinity also hit the crossbar on his most recent outing

totewin: Where’s Cato

toteeachway: Hors Jeu

PACHACUTI was second of 2m4f at Ffos Las a month ago and, given the third from that contest has won since, David Pipe’s gelding merits the utmost respect back up in trip, despite a 3lb rise. First-time cheekpieces may spark further improvement from Madajovy following his Warwick second last time, while Godot is another who arrives here with strong form claims.

totewin: Pachacuti

toteeachway: Madajovy

TENNESSEE TANGO chased home two talented rivals when filling third place over 2m at Chepstow in December and the strength of that form gives the six-year-old a big chance here. King of Records was narrowly denied when runner-up at Hereford last time and he could prove to be the main danger. That said, Reteti and Answer That are others who merit consideration.

totewin: Tennessee Tango toteeachway: King of Records

Non Stop could only manage seventh when bidding for a double at Ascot in December, but has to be respected back over fences. Cobbler’s Boy should benefit from his chasing bow at Warwick and is likely to show more, but ICARE GRANDCHAMP gets the vote. The eight-year-old has his quirks, but finished over five lengths clear of the third when second at this level at Haydock last month and a similar performance might suffice.

totewin: Icare Grandchamp

toteeachway: Non Stop

Inferno Sacree continues to go up in the handicap without getting his head in front, finishing in the top three in each of his last five starts. He should remain competitive, but OUR PAPA SMURF made every yard of the running to score on his second handicap outing over 2m here and is just 3lb higher. This step up in distance could bring out improvement and he looks the way to go. Macari completes the shortlist.

totewin: Our Papa Smurf

toteeachway: Inferno Sacree

Record High was fourth at Fontwell last time having gone close at the same track prior to that. He still has the beating of Minella Kaiser, but LITTLE WREN may prove a tougher nut to crack. The daughter of Walk In The Park left her moderate hurdling form behind when making all at Fakenham on her chasing bow, and there looks plenty more to come from Dan Skelton’s inmate over the larger obstacles.

totewin: Little Wren

toteeachway: Record High

KILL THE GROOVE bounced back with a close second over C&D a fortnight ago. She looks on a fair mark on the evidence of that neck defeat and another bold bid is anticipated from Karen Jewell’s inmate. The four-year-old Penn Avenue faced a tough assignment when fourth in a decent novices’ event at Windsor last time. She’s open to improvement now handicapping, while the same comment applies to Rene’s Walk.

Cases can be made for each of the trio but the most persuasive is for HORS JEU, who is getting his act together over fences and pulled a long way clear with the winner when narrowly denied at Hereford a fortnight ago. He can make amends at the expense of Star of Affinity, who ran up to the pick of his hurdles form at Wincanton in November and should have more to offer in this discipline.

Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to sponsor the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Plumpton this afternoon, with a tightly-matched field ofsixsettogotopost.

The other course winner set to line up is Andy Irvine’s Godot, an impressive winner of a maiden hurdle here in 2023 who is another to score over the larger obstacles at the track. The consistent nine-year-old bounced back from a

rare below-par effort on return when runner-up at Lingfield last time, staying on strongly at the finish over a shorter trip, and is an interesting proposition steppingupindistance.

Probable S.P’s: 6-4 Tennessee Tango (IRE), 7-2 King of Records (FR), 5-1 Answer That (IRE), 8-1 Kolorized (FR), 12-1 Reteti (GB), 25-1 Shalfa (IRE), 150-1 Shifra (IRE)

TENNESSEE TANGO is a fairly useful bumper winner who has shaped with promise in three runs over hurdles and he can make the most of this drop in class. King of Records has been runner-up twice in maiden/novice company and merits consideration despite his yard going through a quiet spell, while Answer That warrants a market check on his hurdles debut for a new yard.
