RACEDAY MONDAY 19TH OCTOBER 2026 Official race programme £4

WELCOME Bob Champion Cancer Trust Raceday Welcome back for our second fixture of the new season. Today is underpinned by the remarkable story of Bob Champion and the subsequent excellent work of his charity. It has been a pleasure to work with the Charity Committee, and all the team at Plumpton wish them the best of luck in their fundraising today. Today is, however, just one of many important days for the Trust, so please do look at their website for more information. If you can, please donate, and equally please venture to the entrance of our Final Fence Marquee, where you will find a fantastic selection of silent auction items to bid for. Today we have seven races and over £70,000 of prize money up for grabs. Our feature race is the Nick and Valda Embiricos Memorial Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 3). Over the last couple of weeks, the course has received some rain, but we have continued to water in order to get the great track conditions that you will see today. Well done to Marcus and his team. I would like to thank all of today’s sponsors, Betty Chantler, SIS, Back British Farming, Bet Goodwin and Trottenden Farm, along with our Partners, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Kalm Club, for their tremendous support this afternoon. Looking ahead, we have another four racedays before Christmas, so please book early to get our best prices. With sold-out signs for hospitality on November 30th and December 14th, we have decided to open our Final Fence Marquee on November 30th. It is the perfect location for a Christmas get-together, and prices are reduced to £85 per person if you book before the end of October. Wishing everyone a fabulous day. Guy Chadwell CEO

RACING Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins. Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races. Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity. Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached. Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences. Chase - A race run over fences. Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate. Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday. Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race. Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters. Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse. Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse. Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper. Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday. Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights. Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line. Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race. Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish. Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared. Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing. Off the bridle - A term to describe a horse not travelling well. On the bridle - A term to describe a horse travelling well. Open ditch - A fence with a ditch on the take-off side. Outsider - A horse whose chance of winning is considered unlikely. Parade ring - The area of a racecourse where horses are paraded before each race. Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner. Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey. Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing. Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey. Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages. Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race. Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing. Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race. Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race. Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

RACE 1 RACE 2

GONE COUNTRY showed marked improvement when upped in trip at Fontwell in May and is very much respected on his return. It could be a good move getting him out while the ground is still on the livelier side and the unexposed six-year-old is preferred to Market House, who has had a couple of spins on the level since finishing second in this sphere at Fakenham. Fellow course scorer Dotties Star is another to note. totewin: Gone Country toteeachway: Market House

RACE 3

Golly Gosh showed improved form on his chase bow when runner-up at Stratford and must be taken seriously if turned out quickly following his narrow Market Rasen defeat on Saturday. However, EXPERT ANALYSIS might have nicked second ahead of Golly Gosh at Stratford if it wasn’t for a slight mistake at the last fence and he gets the nod. Yorgunnabeplucky is also a player on the pick of last season’s form. totewin: Expert Analysis toteeachway: Yorgunnabeplucky

RACE 4

Since scoring over an extended 2m2f at Stratford, BASILETTE has reverted to the level and built on some pleasing efforts in defeat when capitalising on a comparatively lenient mark at Brighton. She is capable of better over hurdles too and is preferred to Nap Hand, who did himself no favours over C&D but is feared on his previous Perth triumph. Sixty Plus was only third when sent off favourite at Hereford last week, although the quick turnaround suggests better is expected. totewin: Basilette toteeachway: Nap Hand

RACE 5

PALAMON laughed at his rivals at Southwell last week and although probably flattered by the 32-length winning margin, he hardly broke sweat and must be stuck with under his penalty. The runner-up had previously finished closer to Tapley when the Moores’ nine-year-old struck at Fontwell, but today’s top-weight is still a serious contender. It’s been mainly all or nothing with A Little Something this campaign, but she was on a going day last time and must not be dismissed lightly. Nickelforce won’t be far away either. totewin: Palamon toteeachway: Tapley

The addition of a tongue-tie appeared to work the oracle for LATIN at Market Rasen. Olly Murphy’s charge rallied well in the closing stages to grab second place and faces an easier test in this lower grade. Mix De Gris cannot be ruled out based on his close fourth at Newcastle a few starts ago, while it would be no surprise to see Ez Tiger bounce back given he won last year’s renewal off a 2lb lower mark, and Bohemian Breeze is also noted. totewin: Latin toteeachway: Mix De Gris

RACE 7

BASS HUNTER was a really smart bumper horse last season and confirmed the promise of his Newbury and Ascot triumphs when running a blinder at the Cheltenham Festival. Third behind The Mourne Rambler in the Champion Bumper, he can be forgiven a lacklustre effort at Aintree and is a really exciting recruit to the novice hurdle ranks. He can make a winning start over timber, but this is no penalty kick because Anniversary was a nice type on the Flat and always looked in control when making a winning jumps bow at Fontwell. Keep an eye on Bankatary as well. totewin: Bass Hunter toteeachway: Anniversary

RACE 6

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

MILD MAGIC could prove difficult to beat on the prevailing quick ground, despite returning from a layoff. The six-year-old couldn’t prevent the progressive Local Derby from winning here back in April, but she still finished a respectable second and a similar effort could see her off the mark over timber. Where’s Cato and Stamina Chope would prefer some cut in the ground, so Grey Gamble could end up giving the selection the most to think about. totewin: Mild Magic toteeachway: Grey Gamble

WE’RE ABOUT

Remembering Valda and Nick Embiricos The highlight must be the story of Bob Champion and Aldaniti (Niti) as both mum and dad were instrumental in the fairy-tale that was born in the 1981 Grand National. After Niti injured his tendon for the second time in a race at Sandown in 1980 the vet said the kindest thing was to put him to sleep. Mum’s response was “that is totally out of the question” …so Niti came home to Barkfold to begin his long rehabilitation. Mum, with Beryl who looked after the horses at Barkfold Manor Stud, were both fundamental to his successful recovery, with many months of box rest and then enduring many months of walking on the roads to regain his strength. Aldaniti was Bob Champion’s Grand National dream and along with Niti he was fighting his own personal battle with testicular cancer. Mum, Dad and Josh Gifford had made a commitment to Bob that Niti would be there for him. The probability of either getting anywhere near a racecourse again, let alone lining up at the start of the Grand National, were exceptionally low. The pair overcoming all odds won their comeback race at Ascot in February 1981. Then, both battle-hardened warriors stepped onto the famous turf at Aintree on the 4th April 1981. They galloped relentlessly, jumping over all those formidable fences without putting a single foot wrong, and then pulled away up the long run in to win a victory that must be one of National Hunt racing’s most memorable stories. It was equally fitting that a key legacy of the race was the birth of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983. Dad was instrumental in starting the Bob Champion Cancer Trust which up to date has raised over £16 million and has helped form part of the largest male dedicated research facility in Europe, situated at the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, Surrey. And for our research team at the Bob Champion Research and Education Building at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, Norfolk. My family would like to thank the directors of Plumpton racecourse for their extremely generous support of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust though this charity raceday, also for enabling the Nick and Valda Memorial Novices’ Chase today. Could the race reveal a future Grand National prospect? Who knows… but we do know the importance of having hopes and dreams, because sometimes they do come true!

BROKEN GLASSES & BOTTLES Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others, please do not carry drinks on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure.

USE OF SCREENS It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

The interest and enthusiasm generated by racing’s greatest fairytale led to the foundation of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983. Since then the Trust has raised over £16 million. Nick Embiricos with Bob and Aldaniti at Aintree, 1981.

The Trust opened the Bob Champion Cancer Research Laboratories in 2000, in conjunction with the Institute of Cancer Research, creating the first male dedicated research centre in Europe. The Trust’s second facility, the Bob Champion Research and Educational Building, was opened in February 2015 within the campus of the University of East Anglia. It is within these facilities that their current prostate cancer research projects take place. The Team at UEA are continuing to make progress with their bacteria research project led by Professor Colin Cooper. The aim being to target the bacteria and prevent, or slow, the development of aggressive prostate disease. The work on the Trust’s latest grant to the ICR has enjoyed a productive first year, The Nick & Valda Embiricos Memorial Award, has made exciting progress with the help of Advanced AI and technology, aiming to establish early prostate cancer diagnostic tests which, hopefully, could also be applied to other cancer types.
