WELCOME

Welcome to the Season Finale

And what a way to finish the season, with seven races, Best Dressed competitions for Ladies, Gents and Children with some fantastic prizes, great children’s entertainment and after racing a live DJ playing with a live saxophonist, so make sure you stick around for some après-racing fun!

Today we have 56 runners going to post with total prize money of £66,999 on offer. Our feature on the track today is the £17,500 Roy Reeve Memorial Conditional Jockeys’ Training Series Handicap Hurdle which was won last year by Royaume Uni, ridden by Rob Hargreaves and trained by Gary Moore. This year, we have 6 closely matched runners heading to post for what looks a fantastic renewal and we wish them all the best.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, J H Builders, Friends and Family of Emily Mellett, Peter Savill and Family, Friends and Family of Jason Tomlinson and George and Kate Digweed.

We would also like to thank Buxted Park Hotel, Profiles Beauty Salon, Molson Coors, Chakra Spa, Crowne Plaza Felbridge, Mid Sussex Golf Club, Burridge London, Holland Cooper and Washbrooks Family Farm who have kindly donated prizes for the Best Dressed Competitions. To have a chance to win these amazing prizes, please make sure you enter the competition. The 2023/24 season has been extremely positive, showcasing fantastic racing and titanic finishes. We have staged two Premier Racedays totalling £495k worth of prize money, run a new Sussex Stayers Hurdle which was won by Transmission and crowed new champions for the Sussex National (Dom Of Mary), Sussex Champion Hurdle (Our Champ) and Sussex Champion Chase (Scarface).

Across the season we have had over 800 runners with total prize money exceeding £1.4m with many different owners, trainers and jockeys all being successful and entering the hallowed winner’s enclosure. Off the track our retired racehorse stable has been a huge success and visited by many thousands of people who have been fortunate to get up close with some previous equine stars, notably Who Dares Win, De Barley Basket, Pete the Feat, Baron Alco and Nassalam and our family days have also been a great success and it is tremendous to see so many young people visit the track.

Our Retired Racehorse Stable today will house Pete the Feat, who has enjoyed an accomplished career with 47 runs, 11 wins and 12 placings. He has run at Plumpton 9 times winning once, beating Beware Chalk Pit by 12 lengths. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat.

It is a busy day, and both of our enclosures are open, with our Style Competition and Family Entertainment located in the Centre Course so all ticket types have access to these features. There is plenty going on for all the family besides the 7 fantastic races on course and so all fingers point towards an exciting day. Maps will be displayed around the racecourse detailing all our activities and make sure you stay behind for the after party, with Mint DJ spinning some of you favourite tunes.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who have worked tirelessly across the season, along with our sponsors and members and those who have visited Plumpton and made the 2023/24 season a huge success. Can I also wish everyone a good summer and we look forward to welcoming you all back for our new season, which starts again on 22nd September. Between now and September there will be other events happening at the racecourse so please keep an eye open by visiting our website www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk

Have a great day.

Heart of the Community.

Best wishes

CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:

Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late Pay Service

If you need to claim winnings from an on-course bookmaker after a raceday, please send your ticket and covering letter to the following address: Late Pay Department, AGT Ltd, 3a King’s Hall, St Ives Business Park, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY

Dogs

Dogs are only allowed in the Picnic Enclosure and must be on a lead at all times. Please do not leave dogs unattended in your car.

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

There are many ways that you can pick your selection:

- Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.

- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.

- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;

(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;

(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;

(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;

(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;

(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and

(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price. If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Global Esteem sets the standard with an official rating of 103 and must enter calculations, although he was a well-beaten third at Hereford when last seen in November. Alain came from well off the pace to reach the frame at Fakenham last month and he appeals as a leading contender. SOLUTION, however, a two-time winner on the Flat, was sent off as favourite for a warm York handicap when last seen and he looks a solid proposition now sent over timber.

totewin: Solution

toteeachway: Global Esteem

The form of ELIZA DOLITTLE’s recent C&D third has worked out well so Nick Gifford’s six-yearold, who has scope for further progress over staying trips, could shed her maiden tag off an unchanged mark. Sandy Brook continues to edge down the weights and he might appreciate a return to better ground, while Amalfi Skyline, who reverts to hurdles following a mixed spell over the larger obstacles, is another to consider.

totewin: Eliza Dolittle

toteeachway: Sandy Brook

3 TOOTHLESS, a runner-up on each of his three starts over fences so far, appears to have been found the ideal opportunity to go one better. Magistrato is another who has been knocking on the door and he holds obvious claims, along with Aviles, who posted his best chasing effort to date when filling the runner-up spot at Fakenham last month.

totewin: Toothless

toteeachway: Magistrato

MACARI is still of low mileage and, as he already has a course win to his name, returning to this venue is a major plus as he bids to exploit a potentially lenient rating on only his fourth handicap start. A C&D winner last May, Glance At Me rates the chief threat to the selection, although Andapa (second) was only three-quarters of a length behind her that day, so has to enter calculations returning with a first-time tongue-tie added.

totewin: Macari

6

toteeachway: Glance At Me

The hat-trick seeking Yalla Habibi is a good starting point, as he is 2-2 for his current yard and looks capable of handling the 5lb rise imposed after his win at Kempton last month. However, this is a deeper race and there is an additional half a mile to tackle. With that in mind, it could be worth taking a chance on A TICKATICKATIMING, who was a respectable second to a progressive type over C&D in March and notably runs off 1lb lower here. Ilanz and Beholden compete the shortlist.

totewin: A Tickatickatiming

toteeachway: Yalla Habibi

This could prove a suitable opportunity for COPPERHEAD to get back on the scoresheet. Although Joe Tizzard’s inmate has proved expensive to follow the last twice, the return to quicker ground conditions may prove fruitful. Jacamar failed to justify favouritism when only third of four on his stable bow at Ludlow last month, but the nine-year-old cannot be given up on yet, while Judge Earle could go very well if allowed a soft lead.

totewin: Copperhead

toteeachway: Jacamar

Dance And Glance offered something to work with on his 10th-placed debut in a valuable bumper at Newbury in March. Anthony Honeyball’s gelding is likely to prove more competitive in these calmer waters and he isn’t taken lightly. However, EILEEN’S MILAN, a half-brother to Irish Grade 1-winning hurdler Farren Glory, boasts a smart pedigree. The son of Milan could take this en route to bigger things, while market support for fellow newcomer Moon Monarch would also be interesting.

NOTICES

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of Races have been added for the convenience of the public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the post.

All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

366 Marathons in 366 Days!

James Cooper from East Grinstead is currently undertaking a mammoth mission to complete 366 marathons in 366 days!

Having experienced personal depressive periods, James founded ‘Smilinggg; a mission to build healthier and happier lives, one step and smile at a time’ in 2015 and has since challenged himself year on year by completing tough physical endurance events.

James began his latest quest, the Smilinggg366 mission, on 1st January and has run a marathon a day since, with the challenge concluding on 31st December, when he aims to complete his 9,589.2 mile feat to raise awareness and funds for Samaritans.

Please scan the QR code to learn more about James and his mission, how to get involved, and to support him by donating what you can to this incredible cause!

James would be so grateful for any donations big or small!

A marathon alone is an unbelievable achievement - a marathon a day for an entire year (and a leap year at that!) is an unimaginable physical and mental challenge, and your friends at Plumpton Racecourse wish you all the very best as you continue to step and smile your way through 2024!

Jason Tomlinson

For Jason, today marks the end of a forty three year journey to all the racecourses of Great Britain, starting with his local track Haydock Park way back in 1981. As a teenager Jason explored most of the northern circuit of racecourses. Then, the University in Leicester became a great base from which to access the many courses in and around the midlands. Over many years the tougher to get to Scottish, Welsh and southern courses have been integrated into a lifetime of racing trips and family holidays, culminating in today’s celebrations. Jason is here with a group of family and friends who have all been a part of his quest. In achieving a lifelong ambition Jason wants to thank his family and in particular his Dad John, who was the inspiration for this enjoyable and rewarding journey.
