WELCOME Welcome to Plumpton – January Jumps Raceday Our second fixture of the new year and I would like to welcome you to January Jumps Raceday. Our last fixture saw us stage our first ever Premier Raceday which was also our most valuable raceday ever worth £195k in prize money. The quality of the racing was matched by many close finishes and certainly the ride of the season in the Sussex Stayers Hurdle by Joe Anderson riding Transmission, nearly falling off, riding a circuit without stirrups and then winning the race – just goes to show anything is possible. We again hope for the same excitement today. With the recent cold weather, we took the decision to cover the course with frost covers. A team of 25 groundstaff put in an eight-hour shift on Sunday to cover the track, a truly outstanding effort and one that has allowed us to race today. I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, William Hill, Mayo Wynne Baxter, Strong Flavours and Tysers. We wish you all have a tremendous day. We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 65 runners declared across 7 races worth over £60,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £17,500 Class 3 Tysers Veterans’ Handicap Steeple Chase. Last year we unfortunately had to abandon this race meeting, but this year’s renewal looks strong with 8 going to post. Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have De Barley Basket, who ran 18 times during his career winning 5 races and being placed a further 5 times. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat. We are lucky to have the Cheltenham Gold Cup on show today. Make sure you make your way down to the Final Fence Restaurant, where you will have an opportunity to meet Lucy Jackson from Cheltenham Racecourse and see this most prestigious of trophies. Cheltenham are touring the length and breadth of the United Kingdom during their Gold Cup 100 countdown taking in many racecourses, events, schools and colleges, hospitality venues, care homes etc. so that they can share the Gold Cup with a wider community. CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Unauthorised Bookmaking It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling. 1.
Pick your winner! There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. - Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. - Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. – With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. – At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off . – Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)
for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.
WHAT IS RULE 4? Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price. If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner. The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

FAKIR was not disgraced when third at a higher level than this at Wincanton last time and the nine-year-old merits plenty of respect off a 2lb lower mark here. That said, Duhallow Tommy has had a wind operation since his most recent appearance in November and he should not be discounted on his chasing debut. Clondaw Robin and Hector Jaguen are others to consider. SELECTION - FAKIR
CANTY BAY was still in with a big chance when falling two out at Wincanton shortly before Christmas and that effort followed an impressive success at Taunton in November. With a clear round of jumping, the son of Shantou could return to winning ways here. Doc McCoy is another proven winner who must be of interest, while Bob Bob Ricard also arrives here with valid form claims.

Iconic Muddle posted a respectable second on his reappearance over 2m4f at Wincanton recently and must enter the equation. However, this trip is an unknown and there may be some value in taking him on with proven stayer SHANTY ALLEY. Ben Case’s 10-year-old shaped better than the bare form when fourth at Newbury and he lurks on an attractive mark. Juniper cannot be ruled out if on song. Danger - Iconic Muddle
There was plenty to like about MERSEY STREET’s sixth in a novice hurdle at Taunton and the Jonjo O’Neill-trained gelding may have been let in lightly off an opening mark of 97. Tellmesomethingood is heading in the right direction after posting a close-up second at this venue last month and a 5lb rise shouldn’t prevent another bold bid. He’s feared most, closely followed by Kruger Park and Tregele. SELECTION - MERSEY STREET

COPSHILL LAD arrives here on the back of two second-placed finishes in recent months and this appears to be an ideal opportunity for the son of Kingston Hill to go one better. Ben Lilly often makes the frame and is more than capable of going well in a race of this nature, while Hunting Percival eases in grade and is next best.

KING OTIS displayed more verve when attempting to make all at Fontwell on Boxing Day. The 2m3f distance appeared to stretch his stamina that day and although he was beaten when falling at the last, a return to the C&D of his last victory may see the eight-year-old regain the winning thread. Sanitiser went into plenty of notebooks when fourth at Kempton in November and he isn’t taken lightly. The returning Colonel Lesley has the form to be involved too. SELECTION - KING OTIS

FERRYBRIDGE made the most of a reduced mark when opening his account at Newcastle. James Owen’s inmate is only 3lb higher and looks to have been found a suitable opportunity to complete a double. Tara Iti landed this prize in 2022 and shaped better than the beaten distance of his 43-length defeat here last time out suggests. He now races off a 1lb lower mark than his last victory and shouldn’t be underestimated. Any market support for handicap debutant Good Lord would be interesting. SELECTION - FERRYBRIDGE

LAST MEETING REVIEW Transmission winning the £75k Stayers Hurdle race
Gary Moore kicked off proceedings with a win, as Through The Ages justified strong market support under Caoilin Quinn. The promising four-year-old came into the race with much the best form, he jumped well throughout the contest to score by an eventual 4 3/4 lengths. A competitive Limited Handicap Chase saw Scarface get the better of his rivals for Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell. Authorised Speed was well fancied to make amends for his untimely fall at Ascot but some suspect jumping throughout meant he couldn’t see out the race with any conviction and was forced to settle for third. Rocky My Way gave Scarface his biggest challenge and looked to be staying on well to give him most to think about up the run in however Brendan Powell had saved enough in reserve and the pair drew away jumping the last. Walks Like The Man and Classic Anthem fought out an exciting finish in our third race of the day. Anthony Charlton’s Walks Like The Man had cut out the running for most of the contest The pair drew clear of Diplomatic Ash, with Classic Anthem looking to be travelling the best of the pair. They jumped the last together but it was Walks Like The Man who kept on pulling out more to just deny Classic Anthem by a neck, in what was an excellent finish. Joe Anderson delivered one of the rides of the season to win the BetGoodwin Sussex Stayers Handicap Hurdle. At the 10th he was nearly thrown from his mount but performed a miraculous recovery to not only stay on the horse but to then go on a win the race. Our widest margin victory came in our feature race of the day, the BetGoodwin Sussex National. Dom Of Mary sat off the pace for most of the contest but scythed his way through the field to lead two out. Caoilin Quinn went further clear up the run in to give Caoilin his second win of the afternoon. Godot got up in the shadows of the post in the penultimate contest. Morfee looked to have the race won for James Best but was run down late by the game Godot for Stan Sheppard and Andy Irvine. The finale went to Rex Dingle and Chris Gordon. Alto Alto was weak in the market but the first time tongue tie and cheekpieces bought about the desired improvement to claim victory.
