WELCOME Welcome to Plumpton’s First Premier Raceday – The BetGoodwin Sussex National Raceday Welcome to Plumpton and from all of the team we wish you a very Happy New Year. We hope you had a great festive period and enjoyed seeing families and friends but it’s great to see you all here to start the New Year in the best way possible – and we’ve been treated to a cracking card!

Today marks the start of Plumpton’s very first Premier Raceday, an exciting initiative driven by the BHA and one we have fully embraced. Premierisation is enhancing the quality, prestige and experience of certain dates in our racing calendar, meaning you have the chance to see top-quality horses and increased prize money! Today’s BetGoodwin Sussex National Raceday is our biggest ever prize pot, boasting an increase of £90,000 compared to 2023, and will be the first Premier Raceday shown on Sky Sports Racing! You are also the first to experience live Premier Racing at Plumpton itself. You will see several initiatives around the racecourse: at entrances, the Parade Ring, CCTV and big screens and from our raceday announcer signposting premier racing.

Our next Premier raceday will be on 31st March (Easter Sunday), so make sure you join us.

We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 59 runners declared and £195,000 of prize money.

Apart from the Sussex National which is now worth £35,000 we also have three new races headlined by our Sussex Stayers Hurdle worth £75,000. Last year we saw Atakan win the Sussex National, owned by The Reserve Tankers, trained by Joe Tizzard and ridden by Brendan Powell who beat Blame the Game by a neck. The renewal this year looks strong with 11 going to post.

Today we have Baron Alco, nickname ‘Barry’ in our Retired Racehorse Stable. He is our Retraining Of Racehorses (ROR) ‘Horses for Courses’ and we are delighted to welcome him to Plumpton.

During his career he won a pair of Cheltenham bonus series races in the 2016/17 season for owner John Stone and defeated Frodon in the BetVictor Gold Cup. Make sure you pop over and give him a polo and a pat.

CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

Unauthorised Bookmaking It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

Abandonments In the event of a fixture being abandoned, refunds on admission badges and tickets purchased will be paid in the following circumstances: Abandonment before completion of the first race - full refund; Abandonment before completion of the third race - 50% refund; Abandonment thereafter - no refund.

In the event that a refund is due, refunds can not be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, please send your badge/ticket with full address details, within 28 days of the date of the race meeting to Plumpton Racecourse, Plumpton, East Sussex BN7 3AL.

Broken Glasses & Bottles Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others, please do not carry drinks on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure.

No Smoking You are permitted to smoke in all outside areas, including the grandstands and balconies. Smoking is prohibited in any enclosed area. This policy includes electronic cigarettes or any other product deemed unacceptable.

BBQs Please can BBQs be extinguished 15 minutes before the start of the first race.

BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

Pick your winner!

There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.

- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.

- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place.

Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)

for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE 2

Oxygen arrives in search of his hat-trick having won over C&D last month but, though he merits respect, preference is for AUTHORISED SPEED. Gary Moore’s charge was going best when coming to grief at the second-last on his fencing bow and the talented seven-year-old can make amends today. Scarface (third) is 8lb better off with Oxygen for their recent clash and should not be underestimated either. totewin: Authorised Speed toteeachway: Oxygen

The vote goes to CLASSIC ANTHEM, who was on target in a handicap at Sandown last month.

Back in a novices’ hurdle on his second start following wind surgery, there should be more to come from Jim Boyle’s charge and he may prove tough to beat. Both Rock Danse and West Warhorse were victorious last time so they must feature prominently in calculations, along with Walks Like The Man, who hit the frame over 2m here 20 days ago. totewin: Classic Anthem toteeachway: Rock Danse

In what is likely to be a thorough test of stamina, HITITI is preferred following a strong runner-up effort on heavy ground at Sandown last month. A progressive handicapper last season, Mark Walford’s charge can bounce back to winning ways at the main expense of recent Hereford winner Call Me Lord and Eldorado Allen, who has been running with credit over fences of late and is attractively-handicapped over the smaller obstacles. An eye-catcher when staying on late in a Listed chase at Newbury last time, ROSE OF ARCADIA should be well suited by going up to this marathon trip. The relatively unexposed nine-year-old is narrowly preferred to easy Exeter scorer Foxboro and Tommie Beau, who has won Nationals on his last two starts and comes here off a career-high mark. A taking winner on just his second start in this sphere, Sporting Ace is another key player, along with Gold Clermont. totewin: Rose Of Arcadia toteeachway: Tommy Beau

THROUGH THE AGES justified strong market support when bolting up at Newbury last month and it is hard to look past him today, despite the penalty. Nachtgeist finished a solid third at Hereford three days ago and would perhaps be the main danger should he be turned out quickly, while Macari, whose hurdling bow wasn’t devoid of promise, appeals most of the remainder. totewin: Through The Ages toteeachway: Nachtgeist

They was plenty of encouragement to be taken from FLAMELCO’s first completed start over fences when a staying-on third over 2m at Lingfield in late-November. This stiffer test of stamina should see him in a better light and Gary Moore’s inmate edges the vote over Baddesley. The nine-year-old’s stamina looked stretched by the extended 3m distance when third over hurdles at Kempton last time and he isn’t taken likely on this switch to fences. TODAY’S TOP TIPS

BUCEPHALUS posted a respectable third on his return to hurdling at Kempton in November and a similar effort may suffice in this open affair. Colours On Canvas landed a novice hurdle at Lingfield last time with something in hand and an opening mark of 114 looks workable. The five-year-old may emerge as the chief threat to the selection, ahead of Sun Joy, who wasn’t disgraced in a deeper event at Sandown last month. totewin: Bucephalus toteeachway: Colours On Canvas

LAST MEETING REVIEW

The days action began with a novices’ hurdle which went the way of the Chris Gordon trained favourite Goodwin who kept on well to win by two lengths. The gelding received strong support in the betting, going off as the 7/4 favourite and certainly justified the support as he showed plenty of fight to keep on well and score to make it two wins from four starts. It was a good ride from Rex Dingle and Goodwin could be one to keep an eye on going forwards.

The favourite was unable to clutch the win in the day’s second race however as the Venetia Williams trained Oxygen made it two wins from two this term. The gelding was made to work for it however as the market leader Pepe Le Moko pushed him all the way. It was an exciting race as both raced prominently throughout the contest, taking control of the contest approaching the last. In the end it was Oxygen who just had a little bit more left in the tank and Charlie Deutsch rode the gelding to the win. Jane Williams’ Pepe Le Moko looked good in defeat however and still finished seven lengths ahead of the third placed Scarface.

13 went to post for our third race and it was the Nicky Henderson and Nico de Boinville combination that came in clutch as Fierce Warrior took the win. Going off as joint second favourite at 100/30, the promising four-year-old maiden jumped pretty well and looked strong throughout. He rallied well late to take the lead and score the win. His joint second favourites Menaggio and Bentley’s Return took second and third respectively while the well supported In D’Or could only manage fifth.

Next up was the days first Handicap contest, this time for horses rated 0-120 which saw the Sarah Humphrey trained Milan Bridge score his first win in over a year after a great ride from Daryl Jacob in the saddle. The gelding started well and found himself in touch with the leaders throughout the contest. He took the lead approaching the last and was able ride clear comfortably. It was a result that surprised many as this was a sudden and marked improvement in form for the seven-year-old he appeared to enjoy the left-handed track.

The fifth saw Commanding View take the win in the 0-100 Handicap Hurdle. Mel Rowley’s gelding raced well as Charlie Deutsch kept him right on the shoulder of the leader, biding his time as he waited to make his move. He pushed on from two out to take the lead and kept on gamely in an edge of your seat finish as both he and the market leader Tellmesomethinggood raced all out towards the finish line. Commanding View just did enough to hold on for the win by only a neck.

Toby Lawes and Tom Cannon teamed up to win in the sixth race of the day as the well-backed Sir Rock took the win. Despite some less than fluent jumping throughout, the gelding was able to stay in a good position and was just able to find enough to clutch the win. Andy Irvine’s Shaw’s Cross travelled strongly, taking the lead as they approached the last but just couldn’t find enough to hold off the fast finishing Sir Rock.

Our finale went to the Nicky Henderson trained Lady D’Arbanville on only the second race of her career. Speaking of seconds, it was the second win of the day for the Henderson/de Boinville duo here. She looked green throughout the contest but she raced well, riding out a comfortable winner by seven and a half lengths to conclude the days action.

PREMIER PREVIEW Local trainer Gary Moore is well-represented this afternoon (saddles a runner in five of the seven races) and he will be disappointed if he doesn’t get off to the best possible start, with Through The Ages in the juvenile hurdle.

Third behind Triumph Hurdle favourite Burdett Road at Huntingdon, he jumped much better when making all at Newbury, where he won by 15 lengths. Likely to be a short price, it will be a shock if the well-bred son of Golden Horn can’t defy a 6lbs penalty under Caoilin Quinn, who enjoyed a memorable double at Chepstow over Christmas, when partnering Salver (Finale Juvenile Hurdle) and Nassalam (Welsh Grand National) to success.

should go well, provided that the fall doesn’t have a negative impact on his jumping.

Rock My Way looked highlypromising when winning the Grade 2 Classic Novices’ Hurdle on trials day last January and makes his chasing debut here, on the back of a wind-operation.

With the tongue-tie applied, he could well bounce back under Sam Twiston-Davies, whilst the improving Oxygen arrives here on a roll and on the back of a victory over course-anddistance. Up another 6lbs, this looks to be his toughest test to date, but the grey is in fine form at present, as his is trainer Venetia Williams.

In race three, Walks Like The Man should appreciate the longer trip, having been wellbeaten on hurdles debut at this track last month. He had earlier looked quite promising when winning a Newton Abbot bumper, after which he took his chance in a Listed contest at Cheltenham.

However, the penalised runners look to hold sway in this 2m4½f novices’ hurdle, with West Warhorse winning with ease at Fakenham (first start over this sort of trip) and Rock Danse was successful at the third attempt,

up at Hexham. Both handle deep ground and both were ridden to success by today’s riders, Alice Stevens and Daire Davis, respectively.

The one with the strongest form, however, is Jim Boyle’s Classic Anthem, who shaped well in a bumper and a novice hurdle at Kempton, before making an encouraging return at Sandown.

He then made a winning handicap debut at the same track in earlyDecember, coping well with the heavy ground and staying-on strongly, suggesting that this longer trip will be right up his street. That win, which came on the back of wind surgery, came off a mark of 114 and having been upped a further 6lbs by the handicapper, he sets a good standard with an official BHA Rating of 120. Without a runner under National Hunt rules since Tellmesomethingood finished a neck second here on 18th December, Boyle’s Flat runners have been running well of late, with The Conqueror successful at Lingfield just five days later.

The valuable Sussex Stayers Handicap Hurdle sees some familiar names return to the fray, with Nicky Henderson saddling both Call Me Lord and On The Blind Side. The former is just 1lb higher than when successful at Hereford last month, whilst the latter, who is partnered by the inform James Bowen, was dropped 1lb for his recent Sandown third.

He is now just 2lbs higher than

when successful at Newbury in March. Hititi finished in front of On The Blind Side on that occasion and is one of the potential improvers in this field, whilst Eldorado Allen reverts to hurdling – off an 11lbs lower mark – following his fourth in the Coral Gold Cup and Annual Invictus makes his belated seasonal reappearance. Better ground would likely suit Chris Gordon’s nine-year-old, who is a smart performer on his day.

The Sussex National looks equally competitive, with Tommie Beau bidding to followup his regional National wins at Sedgefield and Fontwell. This looks much tougher, however, with Foxboro winning well over a marathon trip at Exeter and the novice Sporting Ace is looking to win this on just his third chase start. He has always threatened to develop into a nice horse and beat the 150-rated Master Chewy in a bumper as a young horse.

Race six also looks to be a tricky puzzle to solve, whilst the most interesting runner in the concluding contest is Colours On Canvas, who made a pleasing British debut at Lingfield in November. The placed horses haven’t exactly franked the form since, but an opening mark of 114 gives him a chance and he is bred to cope with testing ground.

PREMIER PROFILE VOY POR USTEDES What do Voy Por Ustedes and Pentland Hills have in common, other than both being highly talented and successful racehorses and winners at the Cheltenham Festival?

The answer? Plumpton.

Both horses had runs at the Sussex venue ahead of wins at The Festival – the four-year-old hurdler Pentland Hills going on to achieve success in the 2019 Triumph Hurdle (G1), while three races after his Plumpton victory Voy Por Ustedes enjoyed his first Festival glory day in the 2006 Grade 1 Arkle Challenge Chase.

The 2001-born gelding by Villez started his career in 2004 in France as a juvenile hurdler with six runs that autumn before he was transferred to the UK and trainer Alan King, the horse having travelled over the Channel with Penzance, another former Kingtrained Grade 1 Cheltenham star.

That spring Voy Por ran in four British hurdles ridden in the quartet of races by King’s retained jockey Robert “Choc” Thornton.

The Sir Robert Ogden-owned gelding made his first chase start the following November at Warwick, but without Thornton on board – that pleasure was given instead to the 20-time champion NH jockey AP McCoy, who steered

the bay, sent off the 6/5 favourite, to a 3l victory.

“I had a fall at Liverpool and bust some ribs, I wanted to get back to ride at Warwick but Kingy wouldn’t let me ride… I am still not sure he was right!” recalls Thornton, now stud manager for Appletree Stud but then in the midst of a golden period riding for the highly successful King yard. “I had schooled Voy Por that autumn, in my mind he was always going to be that season’s Arkle winner. I know it sounds arrogant, but we were enjoying such a purple patch then, it seemed that we were almost bullet proof.”

Thornton ensured that he regained the ride at Plumpton for that second chasing start in the coralcasino.com Novices Chase over 2m1f, and he rode the horse in every subsequent race apart from the gelding’s very last start.

The £25,000 bonus then on offer to a winner at Plumpton, who went on to win a race at The Festival, swung the decision for connections to send their exciting four-year-old chaser to run at the Sussex track. For Thornton the decision made good sense, too, the jockey being a strong advocate of running good horses at country tracks viewing it as an ideal way to provide a vital career and educational stepping stone.

“You could go and guarantee a nice introduction to a nice horse, and when you ride a good horse on a track like Plumpton it’s just such a fantastic feeling,” he smiles.

“You can just sit where you want to be, in front or behind, and you know almost with certainty that, bar mishap, you are going win. It helps to give a good young horse so much confidence.”

Of the Plumpton track, he says: “You can get yourself in a position at the top of the hill, grab a hold of them and then just freewheel.

Voy Por and Thornton went on to enjoy an enduring chasing partnership between 2005 and 2010. In total, the jockey rode the gelding 29 times, won twice at the Festival on him in the Arkle and the following year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase (G1), and second in the 2008 Queen Mother to Master Minded and in the 2009 Ryanair Chase (G1) to Imperial Commander.

“If you’re on one good enough, you can then nip through on the last bend – generally one or two in front of you roll off the rail as they tire – and, if you have filled up down the hill, you can then hit the rise full of gas. Those last two fences then really set up a horse well – you’re slightly on the rise, it gets them back on the hocks and you can jump those easy enough; I always found Plumpton to be a very fair track.”

In Voy Por’s novice chase, the pair were opposed by the five-year-old mare My World, who subsequently reached a BHA career high of 123, Big Moment, a Listed winner on the Flat who hit 148 at his best over hurdles, and Fleet Street, who had finished third behind Brave Inca in the Supreme Novices Hurdle (G1) the year before.

It was a hot novice, but Thornton’s confidence was not misplaced – Voy Por’s class came to the fore and the pair went clear after jumping the last to win by a comfortable 5l.

As planned that Plumpton outing propelled the King-trained horse

The pair won five Grade 1 chases and 11 races together, were placed six times at Grade 1 level and finished second or third 11 times.

The horse won over a million in earnings.

“We just sort of clicked really,” said Thornton. “He was a horse who could be set alight quite easily, and you had to sit still and quiet on him, and that suited me. I was lucky when riding for Alan as he backed his stable jockeys, I was able to always ride him. It was just a special time at the yard, Voy Por was an integral part of that period and pulling on those colours always felt special.”
