WELCOME Welcome to The Festive Fun Christmas Raceday Sadly, we lost our last raceday the BetGoodwin Christmas Raceday to waterlogging, but am pleased to welcome you to The Festive Fun Raceday today. One week today will be Christmas Day and it’s really starting to ‘feel a bit like Christmas’ so I wish you all an enjoyable day. I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Weatherbys, Friends and Family of Harry Philips, Friends & Family of Derek Hunnisett and John Corrigan. We wish you all have a tremendous day. We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 76 runners declared worth over £82,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track is our second race the £27,500 The Harry Philips Birthday Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 3) which was won last year by Old Painless, trained by Harry Whittington and ridden by Jack Quinlan beating Shaw’s Cross by 14 lengths. The renewal this year looks strong with 8 going to post. Today we have plenty of activities for all ages; we have Sussex Brass playing traditional carols before and post racing, a chance to meet a couple of Santa’s reindeer, and why not visit our miniChristmas market next to the Final Fence Restaurant, plus there is plenty of local and national food and drink offerings to enjoy. Since the last raceday I have some tremendous news to celebrate with you as the Groundstaff Team of Craig French, Ross Craig, Mac Cornford and Lewis Edmond led by Marcus Waters, Clerk Of The Course won the coveted prize of being named the best Groundstaff Team across all British Racecourses by the RCA. This is a fantastic and amazing reward for all their hard work and dedication, and I am sure you will congratulate them on this success. Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have De Barley Basket, who ran 18 times during his career winning 5 races and being placed a further 5 times. He is located next to the Parade Ring so pop down and give him a polo and a pat. Our first raceday of 2024 will be our new Premier Raceday featuring not only the Sussex National won last year by Atakan but also three new races headlined with the Sussex Stayers Hurdle worth £75,000. This day will have a total prize fund of £195,000, an amazing £90,000 more than last year. This is a day that is always high in demand, so if you are thinking of booking admission tickets or hospitality make sure you book now. CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB
Unauthorised Bookmaking It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling. 1.
Pick your winner! There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. - Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. - Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. – With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. – At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off . – Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)
for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.
WHAT IS RULE 4? Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price. If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner. The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

GOODWIN shaped with plenty of promise over an extended 2m4f here on his debut over hurdles and the drop in distance looks like a good move. With that experience under his belt and the likelihood of more to come, he could be the one to beat. El Saviour was successful by half a length at Warwick last time and he should give it a good crack under a 7lb penalty, while Deerstalker should improve on his fourth at Kempton. totewin: Goodwin toteeachway: El Saviour

Oxygen justified his place in the market when winning by two lengths in a class 4 event at Lingfield and he could take a step forward from that effort to get into contention off 8lb higher. However, preference is for PEPE LE MOKO, who was a comfortable victor on his chase debut at Warwick when accounting for his nearest rival by over five lengths. FIERCE WARRIOR showed enough promise on his debut over hurdles when fifth at Market Rasen to suggest a race of this nature should be well within his compass. The main threat is In D’or, who finished a pleasing third at Fontwell in January and, if he is ready to go on his return to the fray, he could easily get involved. Koenigsstern outperformed his huge odds to finish fourth at Exeter last month and is also noted. totewin: Fierce Warrior toteeachway: In D’or

Guguss Collonges is sure to prove popular after making all at Lingfield last time out and a 4lb rise in the ratings shouldn’t prevent another bold bid from Roger Teal’s gelding. However, this does represent a rise in class for the seven-year-old and it may be worth taking a chance on the downgraded MOVETHECHAINS. The selection is effectively 10lb lower than his last winning mark if taking Rob Hargreaves’ 10lb claim into account, and first-time blinkers could help too. TELLMESOMETHINGOOD was far from disgraced on his third-placed handicap/seasonal bow at Lingfield last month. Any natural improvement from the five-year-old could be enough for him to open his account in this sphere. Atreides posted creditable efforts in defeat at Uttoxeter and Taunton last month and Neil Mulholland’s charge is unlikely to be far away, while C&D winners Angel’s Dream and Birdman Bob are noted too. totewin: Tellmesomethingood toteeachway: Atreides

Local trainer Andy Irvine will be hoping for a big run from Brown Bullet here, with the eightyear-old a winner here over hurdles off 5lb higher. She is yet to bother the judge over fences but many have more to offer over time. Both West Orchard and WHO IS THAT are more than capable if they put in a clear round which is anything but guaranteed, with the latter edging it given he was all set to place before falling at Worcester in May. totewin: Who Is That toteeachway: Brown Bullet

With plenty of well-bred horses in action here the form may be worth following in the long-term with LADY D’ARBANVILLE the likeliest winner. The daughter of Authorized was a five-length second at Bangor in May 2022 when showing signs of inexperience and is entitled to have improved markedly since. Dance In The Park ran well when second at Fontwell in September and looks a very serious danger to the selection, while point-to-point winner Realta Liath cost new connections a six-figure sum at the sales and has to be one to keep an eye on. totewin: Lady D’arbanville toteeachway: Dance In The Park

LAST MEETING REVIEW
The days action began with a novices’ hurdle which went the way of the Nicky Henderson trained Shanagh Bob who rode out a comfortable seven lengths winner. The gelding was a strong favourite in the betting, going off at just 2/9 and absolutely justified that support on just the second start of his racing career (the first being a strong win in an Irish point). Despite looking a tad green, he rode well under James Bowen and it was a comprehensive win. He looks to be one to watch going forward for new trainer Nicky Henderson. We had a short-priced favourite clutching the win in the second too as Saligo Bay looked every bit the star that the market made him out to be. Gary Moore’s gelding took a keen hold of the race early on before pushing on to take the lead from just before 2 out. He stormed clear of his rivals and was even able to ease off inside the final furlong. No other horse came close as he finished a massive 20 lengths clear of the remainder with big-price outsider Canford Light taking second. Five went to post for our third race and it was the Paul Nicholls and Bryony Frost combination that came in clutch as Brave Kingdom took the win. Going off at 11/4, the lightly-races sevenyear-old jumped well in his first go at a handicap and looked strong throughout. He took the lead late on kept on well to score the win. The market leader General Medrano looked to be finishing strongly but ran out of steam inside the final furlong and could only manage second. Next up we had a 0-105 novice’s handicap hurdle which saw the Andy Irvine Birdman Bob clutch the first win of his career after a strong ride from Philip Armson in the saddle. The gelding started well and found himself prominent throughout the contest. He raced a little too wide midway through the race but did well to get back on track and ride out the winner over Ede’lffs Rock in second. Even money favourite Duhallow Tommy couldn’t justify the support and only managed third. The fifth saw Stanley Pincombe take the win in the Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. Chris Gordon’s gelding raced well, Miss Molly Landau keeping him in touch with the leaders, biding her time as she waited for the opportunity to make her move. It was a tight finish however and he battled well to hold on to first as No Rematch made the challenge Evan Williams’ gelding could only manage second. The duo of Gary and Jamie Moore completed a double on the day as Kotmask stormed to victory in the sixth. Despite some early issues with his jumping, he looked a little awkward over the fences, he got back on track well to win by an impressive nine lengths ahead of Chris Gordon’s Red Windsor in second. Kotmask has looked bright so far this season and could be one to keep an eye on. Our finale went to Abbeyhill who did well after being held up in the rear early on. He had struggled when last seen at Fontwell but looked to have benefited from that run as he looked much improved here. Dylan Whelan kept his mount back early on before making strong headway late on in the race, he took the lead just before the second last, keeping on well to secure the win.
