WELCOME Welcome to the Bob Champion Cancer Trust Raceday Our second fixture of the season is the well-known Charity Raceday run alongside the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. Bob’s is a remarkable story, as a person, within the sport of racing and even on the big screen! However, I’m sure it is universally agreed that setting up his wonderful Charity that raises thousands for Cancer Research every year is the best achievement. Today we are here to try and raise some more money for that cause and it is just one of many important days for the trust and so do take a look at their website and feel free to donate and please do have a look at the silent auction in the Final Fence Restaurant entrance. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £23k Nick Embiricos Memorial Handicap Chase which was won by Pasvolsky, trained by Chris Gordon and ridden by Tom Cannon. The renewal this year looks strong with eight going to post. We will also be presenting The Jeﬀrey Peate Trainers and Jockeys Challenge Final results for the 2022/23 Season. It was hard fought across both trainers and jockeys with Chris Gordon and Jamie Moore coming out on top in their respective categories. Congratulations to both and we look forward to an equally compelling season again. Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have De Barley Basket, who ran 18 times during his career winning 5 races and being placed a further 5 times. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat. Looking ahead we have four racedays before Christmas, so make sure you book early to take advantage of our best priced tickets. CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Unauthorised Bookmaking It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Radios, Mobile Telephones and Computer Equipment The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc for any purpose at the racecourse. Abandonments In the event of a fixture being abandoned, refunds on admission badges and tickets purchased will be paid in the following circumstances: Abandonment before completion of the first race - full refund; Abandonment before completion of the third race - 50% refund; Abandonment thereafter - no refund. In the event that a refund is due, refunds can not be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, please send your badge/ticket with full address details, within 28 days of the date of the race meeting to Plumpton Racecourse, Plumpton, East Sussex BN7 3AL.

Broken Glasses & Bottles Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others, please do not carry drinks on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure.

No Smoking You are permitted to smoke in all outside areas, including the grandstands and balconies. Smoking is prohibited in any enclosed area. This policy includes electronic cigarettes or any other product deemed unacceptable.

BBQs Please can BBQs be extinguished 15 minutes before the start of the first race.

BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling. 1.

Pick your winner! There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. - Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. - Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. – With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. – At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off . – Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)

for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4? Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price. If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner. The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

UGGY UGGY UGGY was a comfortable eight-length victor on his latest outing at Warwick and, considering the manner of that victory, he could be very difficult to beat even off a 10lb higher rating. The main danger is Tara Iti after his success at Fontwell over an extended 2m1f, as he only has a 3lb rise to contend with. SACRE COEUR went in by two lengths last time at Fontwell and that was in a class 2 event. The daughter of Montmartre was only put up 3lb for that and she could prove hard to beat. In The Air struck over the smaller obstacles when last seen in May and has to be of interest on his chase debut, while Lord Baddesley makes his return to the fray and is another to note. totewin: Sacre Coeur toteeachway: In The Air

Ideallko won well at Ffos Las eight days ago and, with the longer trip of little concern, he appeals strongly under a 7lb penalty. Jack Doyen is also respected after an improved effort in cheekpieces (discarded today) at Warwick when last seen. DEAL EM HIGH posted a creditable fourth at Stratford in August and Debra Hamer’s unexposed hurdler, who had shown signs of ability in maiden company previously, receives a tentative vote off 2lb lower. With conditions likely to be testing, it might pay to side with KADEX. A winner on heavy ground when trained in France, he ran well for a long way when sent over fences at Warwick last month. The step up in trip could unlock some improvement and a subsequent 4lb ease in the handicap ought to further aid his chance. WESTERN SOLDIER was Group 3-placed when trained on the Flat in Germany, and he posted an excellent third on his hurdles debut 12 days ago. Natural improvement might be enough to see Milton Harris’ charge strike, while Flidais, who sets the standard on official ratings, might be the main danger. LAST MEETING REVIEW

Our first race of the 23/24 season kicked off with a juvenile hurdle which saw the wellfancied Gozo come out victorious, In the hands of Jack Quinlan, Gozo was keen too get on with things and took up the running from the beginning, going clear with one circuit to go. This useful Flat performer justified his strong support on hurdles debut and albeit his huge lead was vastly reduced heading for home, his rider judged it to perfection. The second contest of the day was left wide-open when the 7/4F Gamble Tiep unseated Beau Morgan when blundering 4 from home. Tamaris was given a wind surgery in early August and the addition of the tongue-tie seemed to aid his cause on the day. Despite not looking keen to get going, he got away okay in the end and was effectively handed the win with the favourite falling and scored by nine and a half lengths, in a well strung out field. Aviewofthestars hadn’t shown too much for Shiela Lewis but now being schooled by Fergal O’Brien, he looked a much improved type. A competitive field of 12 went to post but only 11 finished with Sam Twiston-Davies pulling up his mount after one circuit but it was Liam Harrison who came out on top. His mount was 4lb wrong at the weights but picked up very well to make a winning start for this yard and looked a different animal on this occasion, Our feature race of the day was a 0-125 hurdle with the 2/1F Our Champ producing a fabulous display. The second winner in a row to make a successful start for their new yard, Our Champ bounced back from a modest effort to score for Chris Gordon after a 183 day break. This was his first win under Rules and could now improve vastly as a handicapper. Sean Bowen has a fantastic season last year and seems to have picked up right where he left off in our penultimate race, teaming up with Ryan Potter. Post No Bills proved just how effective front-running tactics are once again here on Post No Bills and put in an excellent round of jumping over the two miles and one furlong trip. He was rarely troubled in this 4-runner affair, with the favour departing early. Our six race card concluded with a bumper and we possible saw a future star in the making from Nicky Henderson’s stable. 7lb claimer Freddie Gordon rode the previous Killarney winner and barely broke a sweat for her new connections on British debut, She’s by no means the biggest type, but has bags of potential and is bred to make a classy hurdler, being rated to Cool Macavity and Princess Ombu.

HORSE CARE AT PLUMPTON At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

The interest and enthusiasm generated by racing’s greatest fairytale led to the foundation of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983. Since then the Trust has raised in excess of £15 million. Nick Embiricos with Bob and Aldaniti at Aintree, 1981.

It is within these facilities that their current research projects take place on prostate cancer. In the UK it has been estimated that one in every 9 men will develop prostate cancer. The incidence of this disease is also increasing and, within the next decade, is set to overtake colon cancer and even lung cancer to become the most common cancer in men. ALDANITI 4... my Dad’s lucky number. At 4pm on the 4th day of the 4th month, in the 4th race carrying the saddle cloth number 4 ALDANITI and Bob Champion won the Grand National. The year was 1981, and to this day is one of the biggest fairytales in horse racing. ALDANITI had injured his tendon early on in his career, then fractured his hock when placed 3rd in the Hennessey Gold Cup. Later on after coming 3rd in the Cheltenham Gold cup and 2nd in the Scottish National, he broke down so badly at Sandown the vet said he should be put to sleep. Mum and Dad had other ideas and said It was “absolutely out of the question” and Niti came home to Barkfold to begin his rehab. Meanwhile, Bob was overcoming his greatest battle, to win his fight over testicular cancer. Both horse and jockey were on a long journey to win the world’s greatest horse race, a dream that Bob had had since the very first time he rode Niti in a race. In the February of 1981 both horse and jockey made a winning return to the racecourse at Ascot in the Whitbread Trial beating Anaglogues Daughter.

Then, finally the day came, both the battle hardened warriors stepped onto the famous turf at Aintree and galloped and jumped and jumped and galloped all the way up the long run in to win a victory that resulted in the birth of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust. This has raised over £16 million and has made leaps and bounds into research, for testing, treating and returning men back to full health. So this 4th day of the 4th month I am remembering and looking to the future for everyone with great determination and love.
