WELCOME
Welcome to the second day of our Sussex Day
Welcome to Plumpton’s very own Sussex Day and we are excited to see you all on what is set to be a tremendous day.
We are proud to be part of the Sussex community and this day aims to showcase many of the things that makes the county so great with a whole host of activities, demonstrations and entertainment from the local area to accompany an exciting seven-race card.
Today we have 71 runners going to post over 7 races with £73,999 of prize-money on offer. Our feature on the track today is the £20k Become a Plumpton Member call 01273 890383 Handicap Hurdle where 10 closely matched runners head to post for what looks a fantastic renewal. From the 10 runners, we have had four horses that have run at Plumpton, with Up the Straight, Crossing The Bar and Good News all winning, with the latter running a total of 9 times with 3 wins between 2021 - 2022. Cumulatively all ten horses have amassed earnings of over £290,000 and we wish them all the best.
We would like to thank both of our sponsors, The Southdown & Eridge Trail Hunt and Bluebell Vineyards as they are a big part of the day and so we hope they and their guests have a great time.
There’s plenty of entertainment off the track too, with a series of vintage fete games to try your hand at, a farmers market to browse the fantastic array of products our county has to offer, Morris Dancing, a parade from Southdown & Eridge Hunt in front of the grandstands, plus live music throughout the afternoon. Our younger racegoers can have their face painted for free, enjoy a hands-on experience with some of the interesting species at our wildlife display, and be mesmerised the work of our magician and balloon artist.
We have also transformed our Marquee into a dedicated kids play area, ensuring the little ones can have just as much fun as the adults. While the kids are playing, parents can relax and enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee too.
Looking ahead, we have our Season Finale, Ladies Day on 14th May. General admission tickets start from £15 with hospitality starting from £75 and can be booked or enquired by visiting www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk
Have a great day.
Best wishes
Craig Staddon Chief Executive

CUSTOMER INFORMATION
Horse Care at Plumpton
At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.
The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
Use of Screens
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:
Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB
Unauthorised Bookmaking
It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.
On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late Pay Service
If you need to claim winnings from an on-course bookmaker after a raceday, please send your ticket and covering letter to the following address:

Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

BETTING INFORMATION
A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.
1. Pick your winner!
Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
2. Where to place your bet
– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.
– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.
3. Place your bet
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:
Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off
– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings
Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.
PLACE TERMS
All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:
(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;
(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;
(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;
(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;
(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;
(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and
(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.
WHAT IS RULE 4?
Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.
If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.
The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Dr Richard Newland is operating at a 22% strike-rate over hurdles (6-27) in the past five seasons and his sole representative on the card is Independence in the Happy Retirement To Paul Warren Handicap Hurdle at 3:00.
TELHIMLISTEN looked to have his chase debut in the bag at Sedgefield last month, only for unseating the rider shortly after jumping the last. Jennie Candlish’s inmate now has a 14lb rise to overcome, but he appears to be open to improvement in this sphere and gains the vote. Not Another Muddle has posted some creditable efforts in defeat of late and is feared most, ahead of Gavroche D’allier, who is having his first start over fences.
SELECTION; TELLHIMLISTEN Danger - Not Another Muddle
Father Of Jazz arrives as the highest-rated rival in this maiden contest and he would take some beating if repeating his Huntingdon second in December. That said, he may be worth taking on, with question marks surrounding his latest efforts, and a chance is taken on hurdling debutant BREAKING COVER. Anthony Honeyball’s gelding shaped better than the distance beaten when eighth in a bumper at Ascot in October and he may have more to offer in this sphere. Aviles also merits consideration.
SELECTION; BREAKING COVER Danger - Aviles
Abingworth justified favouritism when getting up to win here earlier in the month and a 4lb rise should see Gary Moore’s charge involved once more. Preference, however, is for stable switcher INDEPENDENCE, who could be freshened up by a change of scenery. The selection does need to bounce back to form, after a couple of below-par spins on the Flat, but his trainer usually excels with such types. Andapa may have benefitted from a wind procedure since last seen in action and completes the shortlist.
SELECTION; INDEPENDENCE Danger - Abingworth
Only a neck separated Northern Poet (winner) and Hiway One O Three (second) when they clashed here a fortnight ago and the former is taken to uphold the form, with first-time cheekpieces applied. However, they may both have to settle for supporting roles if TIP TOP MOUNTAIN continues to flourishes over this sterner test of stamina. Robert Walford’s charge won with something in hand over 3m at Uttoxeter at the start of the month and may follow up from just 4lb higher.
SELECTION; TIP TOP MOUNTAIN Danger - Northern Poet
RAMO is difficult to oppose in his bid for a third consecutive success and, having won by 11 lengths at Newton Abbot when last seen, a 10lb higher mark is noted as fair. It’s an added bonus that the selection is a previous course and distance winner and the six-year-old commands the utmost respect. Sporting Ace is consistent and rates as the main danger, while Hasty Parisian is noteworthy back up in trip.
SELECTION; RAMO Danger - Sporting Ace
A step up in trip, as well as a 10lb raised mark, may not be enough to stop CAPTAIN CLAUDE securing a double having scored by 23 lengths over 2m 3f at Fontwell last month. There is likely much more to come from Anthony Honeyball’s six-year-old and he can have another big say in proceedings, but the class-dropping Shot Boii should not be underestimated. One For The Wall is another to bear in mind.
SELECTION; CAPTAIN CLAUDE Danger - Shot Boii
LINDA MOON lost little in defeat when finishing three-quarters of a length back in second over 2m at Kempton last month. She was denied a clear run on that occasion and is entitled to improve, with the extra couple of furlongs unlikely to stop her, but Longhouse Legacy was a comfortable winner in a point contest in February and is not ruled out on her Rules bow. Recent bumper winner Stuti completes the shortlist.

Danger - Longhouse Legacy

LAST MEETING REVIEW
Our last meeting was a double header in the sunshine over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. It proved to be a great meeting for Gary Moore, who got the action on the Sunday off to a flyer with Abingworth making smooth headway from the back of the pack under Caoilin Quinn to win by half a length, starting the weekend off in fine style for favourite backers. Pleasure Garden sprung something of a shock under Tom Cannon in the next, jumping well on chase debut to give trainer Karen Jewell her first winner as a trainer, benefitting from the departure of Hector Jaguen who unshipped Caoilin Quinn at the final fence. Iskar D’Airy had a relatively easy task to get off the mark over hurdles, and he did so by just under two lengths, making it a double on the day for Gary Moore – this time with son Jamie in the saddle. He wasn’t hard pressed to win and is one to keep on side for handicaps further down the line. The fourth race on the day saw a tight finish, with Nick Gifford’s Northern Poet just holding on in the final strides from the fast-finishing Hiway One O Three to give James Davies a winner in the saddle.
Teddy Blue landed the BetGoodwin Sussex Champion Hurdle, giving Gary Moore a treble and Jamie a double on the day. The talented five-year-old didn’t travel or jump with a great deal of fluency, but just had enough in the tank to hold on from Get Back Get Back, who came with a late run under Ben Bromley. The winner has contested some good races this season and deserved this big race success.
The progressive Bashers Reflection landed the penultimate race on the card, coming smoothly from the back of the field to make it back-to-back wins for Ben Case. Harry Bannister did the steering, and there is more to come from this progressive type. Chris Gordon ended the day with a winner with the veteran Ramore Will taking advantage of better ground to gain his third win of the season under five-pound claimer Angus Cheleda.
The first race on the second day of the meeting started well for favourite backers, with the Andy Irvinetrained Godot winning easily to break his duck over hurdles. He was always prominent under Stan Sheppard and wasn’t hard pressed to win. Chris Gordon recorded his second winner of the meeting, with the Bryony Frost-ridden Alto Alto seeing off a Gary Moore-trained duo to land a valuable handicap chase. He idled close home but had plenty in the tank and should be capable of winning races off a revised mark.
Embolden made a surprise winning handicap hurdle debut for Clare Hobson, staying on strongly under Bradley Roberts to win a shade cosily. The feature race of the day, the BetGoodwin Sussex Champion Chase, saw the Moore’s make it a big race double at the meeting with the success of Black Gerry. Held up under Jamie Moore, the winner made his challenge two out and a good lead over the last, keeping on well and winning by a length over Captain Tom Cat.
Hilltown survived a steward’s enquiry for Seamus Mullins and Micheal Nolan to return a winning favourite in the three-mile handicap hurdle. He edged right in the closing stages, but the margin back to Flemen’s Tipple was enough for the stewards not to take any action. Second favourite Delgany Monarch won the penultimate race of the meeting, making all and winning by 25 lengths under Tabitha Worsley for Richard Rowe in fine style over favourite River Tyne. The concluding bumper on the day saw Paul Nicholls in the winners enclosure, with Bryony Frost guiding Country Lady to victory in game fashion over the Joe Tizzardtrained Western Knight.

PLAY SMARTER
AVILES showed enough to suggest a race like this should be within his grasp when runner-up 3 times towards the end of 2022 and his stable has been in cracking form in recent weeks so he holds good claims back from a break. Recent C&D runner-up Highland Frolic could be the one to follow him home. Irish point recruit Breaking Cover is likely a bit better than he was able to show in a decent Ascot bumper in the autumn and also makes the shortlist now hurdling after 176 days o

RAMO has a career-high mark to overcome but is a young stayer firmly on the up so gets the vote in his hat-trick bid. Surrey Quest could emerge as the chief threat kept hurdling off a handy-looking mark, with in-form pair Heaven Smart and Sporting Ace completing the shortlist in an open handicap.
